The current world record black bear, from Craven County, North Carolina, weighed 880 lbs. Here in WNC we have large Bear Sanctuaries. Where I live is the Pisgah National Forest (500 thousand acres.) It borders the Nanahala National Forest (531 thousand acres), and the Smokey Mts National Park (520 thousand acres). Other National Forest like the Cherokee National Forest, Gorges State Park, etc also border these forests. Many of the elevations here are over 6000 ft. This area has the largest black bear population in N America, if not the world. There are areas in this vast wooded and wild area where bear have never been hunted or even seen by man. Black Bear food is plentiful here too. Trust me when I say there are monster black bear here. The weights of black bear given in this video are not indicative of the black bear here.

United we Stand To clarify for folks, Craven County, NC is in the coastal area. NC has a good population of bears in the coastal regions, which seems strange. I guess they don't hibernate too long because of the heat, and don't use calories running up and down hills, as it's flat out there. I've been in Wilkes County (NW NC) for 18 years and have never seen one. However, beekeepers do have problems with them around here.

If you look at the photo again you'll see that wasn't in Wyoming, that was in Utah and was likely done by the Division of Wildlife Resources in order to put a radio collar on the bear.

The largest bear on record was killed in 2006 and it weighed 886 pounds, it was killed by a truck. The range said if it would have eaten for 30 to 60 days it would have gone into the den around 900 to 1000 pounds. The largest black bear killed before that was in Pennsylvania weighing 885 pounds, it was shot in the 1800 some time.

@@blackjaguar5120,. I think the sub species Identification is an illusion. I think their size has more to do with habitat, weather, available food supply, competition, etc. Craven County, where the world record was taken, is a coastal county. More available waterfowl, large fish, farms, etc. ,very little competition and milder climate. (They dont hibernate long and may be active at various times in the winter.) Here in WNC we have vast wild areas accentuated with bear sanctuaries, plenty of food sources, and the bears dont hibernate as deep either. They may be active in winter, live longer, and grow bigger. In Alaska, they hibernate for months on end, and have to compete with Grizzlies and large brown bear which makes them more aggressive. Lower herbal food supplies like berries, acorn, etc makes them more carnivorous. Black bear are highly adaptable. I think this gets misunderstood and leads people to divide the species into further sub species. There is only one American Black Bear.

Chad Lodge Black, Kodiak, brown and grizzlies have no problems with reproduction in North America. Wildlife management has worked well throughout the Rockies, Canadian Rockies and Alaska by creating a balance between hunting and conservation to keep the population healthily growing since the 80’s. You can thank organizations like state GFP and conservation groups like BCHA or the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. Bear Guard has done nothing to help the population growth of bears. Grow up.

Hilary Knight State Game Commissions keep track of bear population. The number of days that are open to bear hunting are limited and they keep track of how many bears are taken on a daily basis. In my home state, the Game Commission has cut short the number of days that bear hunting was allowed because hunters took the number of bears the Game Commission wanted taken. In my home state there are more bears than ever. I have seen bears in areas where I have never seen bears previously, I don't hunt game animals but I do hunt Varmints, especially Coyotes.
@toddandangelbrowning29205 жыл бұрын
My state has added an early bear season. There is no spring hunt. The reason is that bears are overpopulating. They have become a nuisance. This past year they wanted 100 bears from a certain county during the early season. Game biologists determine these seasons so that EVERYONE may enjoy these magnificent creatures. The herd is healthier and the nuisance bears become few, they can really tear up a farm.
