So this may sound stupid, but would it be inappropriate to sing this in an audition for Penny Pingleton from Hairspray?

Funny how a song that was so progressive 60 years ago is the exact opposite nowadays- one of the songs that is a bit dated!

I know your comment is five years old but I have to disagree. Back in 1967, The Supreme Court enforced anti-interracial marriage laws which gives further context to Hair's radical politics; even nowadays it is seen as radical. It is not an objectification of black men but an acknowledgment of sexual desire and liberation - a desire for black men to be more than just the servant or the slave or the side-piece (this is a struggle even in today's' society). I agree that some of Hair's satire has become lost due to present society's chances, however it does not diminish the politics of Hair, both from its original context and the context we create for it now with every new performance (a revolution of revivals).
