@jebiusenvy
@jebiusenvy 3 жыл бұрын
Ain't this true. I went to a PWI because I grew up in an 80% Black neighborhood and went to a 90% Black high school. I had a doctor that raised her daughter in an all white area and made her attend one. Most Black kids from the predominantly Black neighborhoods go to state school PWIs or private PWIs especially growing up in the Northeast.

@@jebiusenvy Exactly after going to Dunbar High School and living in a segregated upper middle class neighborhood of ALL black people I needed to know how white America functions. So grateful I did because in all my jobs in corporate Amerikkka I was the only black person and had I never learned to suffer thru their hate in college, I would have NEVER made it in their business world of television news. I was in total culture shock when I stepped on that campus of all white folks. I was just thinking how it would have been walking into a office having never interacted with them. Besides for some of them I was the first black person they had really interacted with. So we learned from each other. I was just talking to a friend and we agreed that our black schools Were NEVER visited by a single HBCU. NEVER, EVER NOT ONCE. Many of the black kids in the uh ruh area I lived in went to the white schools, and those with parents of new wealth all went to the black one. Three major universities offered me full academic scholarships to their universities. HBCUs no contact, no letter, no nothing. I was in Texas. So none of us from our Dunbar and I say Dunbar because it was a black school, none of us went to an HBCU. Of course the black kids who went to the all white high schools went to HBCUs- the ones who never talked to us. Lived across the street from our school, but went to the white school across town. What we need to acknowledge is that HBCUs were for the UH RUH black folks, mainly for breeding and pedigree-----up until about 2000, they were a little secret for my kinda people folks (book reference) and us 1st generation of BAPs weren't in on the secret- because our parents had been laborers instead of doctors and lawyers and teachers. So the PWIs snatched us up. THEN when the new generations of Uh Ruh black folks kids got college ready, we sent our kids to our PWI universities that gave us full scholarships and recruited us. Now the HBCUs want and need our money, because we're into three to four generations of PWI lineage of BLACK FAMILIES with the resume......SO NOW the sharecroppers' great grandkids are being pressured to attend. Nope. You didn't want my dad's sweat earned money, you're not getting my corporate money for the grands. My money goes to the Black Student Association at my PWI. I was up for a job against a sister from Spelman, same degree right out of college. I got the job, because they had never heard of Spelman but had heard of my State PWI because we always went to the football playoffs. So we need to stop acting like going to a HBCU makes one more black, when most are sitting there having never even gone to a black church growing up, let alone had ANY black friends.

@@jebiusenvy Facts. I feel like HBCUs are good for the ones disconnected from their culture (or ones who want to emerge in black culture even more which is fine 💜). But I had teachers who were pan africanists and black nationalists all my life💀 So I’m fine at a pwi because I’m secured in my blackness already. Don’t get it twisted tho there’s definitely some black ppl at my pwi in the sunken place who need to go to a hbcu😂😂😂

I wish they would have asked more historical questions about our culture, things that we should know versus the more subjective questions about hip hop. True Hip Hop is apart of black culture but so is gospel... so those questions were debatable but knowing about black codes, tuskgee experiemnts, the contributions of Frederick Douglas etc would have really hit it on the mark for me.

At this point we should all realize that if you want to see change it's about investing your dollars. College Algebra is the same no matter where you go. Hbcu's serve a purpose in educating our own. I have worked on both sides of the fence. It's a difference between be educated and someone pouring into you. If you didn't go to one it's ok nobody is downing you. Pwi's need minority enrollment to keep govt funds coming in. That's the only reason they recruit you. Yes some hbcu's were founded by whites but not all of them . That doesn't take away from their mission and our ancestors once educated realized we aren't going to teach just the status quo. I promise you looking forward hbcu's will play role in offering a safe environment where you can be yourself and don't have to worry about karen. This younger generation has low self esteem coming out of high school. Hbcu's will equip and build up that esteem so that it's bulletproof.

There are many opportunities to get involved in clubs, organizations, sports, homecoming court, etc. Take a tour of the HBCUs in your state or around the country and see for yourself. I think culturally and socially it's a much more worthwhile experience for folks that are African-American. Some of the classes you can take are tailored to fit our history and culture, which is pretty dope. But they are not as heavily resourced and funded as PWIs, and they don't give out as much financial aid, so keep that in mind.

It taught me to be around everyone after going to a 90% Black high school and growing up in a 90% Black neighborhood. I needed that change. Had I went to an HBCU I would have never excelled like attending a Minority Serving Institution. Most of the kids that go to HBCUs I knew came from White areas or didn't want to go to Community College and just wanted to get into a College.

@@jebiusenvy ??? Still trying to understand the point you were trying to make? HBCUs have always produced generations of Black leaders in Business, Civil Rights , Science , Medicine ,Business and Education! I’m happy you enjoyed your experience but MSI, PWI simply do not serve the sole purpose of Black Education!
