Being from the Black Country i loved this layout but a tiny bit annoyed me on the backdrop as there should be 3 tower blocks as its Dudley on it as 2 of the towers were demolished in the 2000's

"Can you give me a push?" NO! The loco has failed. Send another to tow it and run double-headed. Offer the passengers free tea and coffee and delay every other train by four hours. Realism!

I think the background wallpaper is too opaque and too blue (except where it is very far away). I love locos that can crawl really smoothly. But I too think the trains are running somewhat too slow. It's as if the entire layout is within yard limits.. Then again, I'm bitching from across the pond in Los Angeles. Maybe there's something about British railroading I'm not aware of... M

See the comments below relating to the then correct class speeds but "bitching from across the pond"? The average spped of today's Amtrack superliners is what 50/60 mph and even the new Florida Brightline (billed as "high speed") is 0nly 80 or so. Remember that the prototype depicted here is some FIFTY years ago. Class 5 track on the BNSF around LA is able to run freight over 60 mph but that isn't exactly impressive given the different freight stock and motive power, it's the track, which is sub standard.

Without doubt a superb layout. But so so slow. Not sure I fully understand why it has to be. Many times I have seen this layout at shows but walked away after a few minutes because it simply gets boring. Thanks for sharing. Bob

The trains on this layout are being run at the correct scale speeds. During the era depicted many freight trains were either unfitted or partially fitted and would run as class 7 (45mph) or class 8 (35mph) which at this scale does look very slow, especially compared to modern air braked freights which can run at much faster speeds.

This layout, as far as I know, is a fictional location but based on the South Staffs in the Black Country during the 1970's. I live on what was the Northern section of the Line above Walsall. I was at school at this time and was able to watch the trains from the classroom windows. From my observations I can say that the speed that the trains are operated at on the layout are spot on. The mix of motive power on this particular video is also very much as I remember it 20's, 25's, Peaks and 47's.. Nice to see the 44, I wonder if they got South of Bescot very often? A fairly common sight during this period was an 08 marshalled in the middle of a train going to and from Works or reallocation. This is without doubt a splendid and very evocative layout. Very nicely shot as well.
