First heard Dyke play this in Basingstoke in the 90s -- it was a concert with Evelyn Glennie. James Watson was conducting and the performance of this piece was just astonishing. Kevin Crockford was on sop and he soared across the top of the band like the top note of an organ. At that time, I just hadn't heard a brass band play play like that.

OK a little contrarian here. First off, you musicians are amazing, well done. Second, sorry conductor Childs, the tempo is absurdly clownish. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Third, you completely skipped the final beautiful chorus coming out of the heavy pedal bridge 2/3 of the way through..🤔 THAT's the hook of the whole piece!..🤔 Why? Instead you went straight to the outro and finale. I've been a fan of this piece for around 50 years and have heard it executed beautifully many times but also mangled and mauled in several different ways. Not sure this one takes the cake, but have to say, it comes close...and it's all in the tempo and deletions. Great musicianship! Arrangement and direction, not so much.

Amazing performance but a shame the arranger decided to cut out one of the most beautiful parts of the composition

As if Diane Bish herself were conducting.

Wonder what the Bb bass player said to his partner. Didn’t look good 😂 Maybe just trying to get him going.
