This is a good story. During my time in the USMC, I served in Viet Nam during the TET offense. I was faced with a situation where one of our units was under attack at an outpost on an island 50 miles or so south of Da Nang. They had lost communications and had no way of calling in air support. It was at a place called Chu Lai this was in the beginning of 1970. It was nighttime, and we're being heavily bombarded with everything the cong had. My communication unit was in an open face bunker and we're all extremely nervous. It was then that the company commande, along with our Gunnery Sargent, approached the bunker I was in and asked for a volunteer. It was dead silent, but nobody responded. Gunny stated he didn't want to appoint someone to do this, but he instead appealed to our good senses when he reminded us there were good Marines out there that needed help. I, at the time, was very religious and felt compelled to volunteer to me, these guys were humand be8ngs and my fellow Americans. The communication truck was on top of a hill. This fact did not escape me. But I went and got communications up and going and could hear the action from my end. But they finally called in air and artillery strikes and gained control of a bad situation . The next day the commander gave me a meritorious mast in front of my platoon. The thing I found strange was no one from the outpost or even my own platoon ever reached out in gratitude. I guess it was all part of the job. So many thankless veterans probably have stories of their own that people in this country should know about. But every now and then, I think about this moment and feel glad I was able to help another person out only because it was the right thing to do. My being a Black man had nothing to do with it. That outpost was mostly White Marines. Hooray, may God help us all.

The mistreatmènt of our soldiers during the Vietnam war was disgusting. I was 17 when that war was going on. I talked to some of the returning military personnel & listening to them vent about all the terrible things that the witnessed & were subjected to made me realize we know very little about what these young people were subjected to! I thank God for just listening to them vent. It gave me much more respect for our Military.I can say Thank u for real for their service & protection they give us as Fellow Americans. This is in the military and in every walk of life. I remember when I moved to Hawaii and job searching, I was told that I did not sound black on the phone, I sounded whiter. I asked him how does a black person sound. We as Black Americans get paid lower salaries doing the same jobs as our white counterpart. Why can't we be seen as just Americans?

My mother was friendly with a elderly white neighbor and she’d go to her house about once a week just to make sure she had enough to eat. When the old woman died she went to the funeral or she tried to. They kicked her out telling her that they don’t want her kind there. I’ll never forget the devastated look on my mothers face when she walked in the house . I was about 11 when that happened and she didn’t tell me what really happened until I was in my late 50s . I thought she was upset over her friend’s death. The racism tore her. She’d rarely experienced that because one of my great great grandmothers was a white woman and I think the old woman she’d befriended reminded her of her great grandmother.

This story is so sad. If the elder gentleman had not sacrificed his life to save the deceased he would have been rejected by all of them because vid the color of his skin. I know that this is only a story. Many white people are not like this and they are very kind. I have experienced them throughout my life and they are the most generous and kindest people. Not all of them but some have prejudices. They will have to face their demons and judgement. However the slightest of situations softened these people's heart in the story. They immediately repented. But yet it took something to change them. It was not genuine and automatic. Hopefully they will change. Truth be told.
