Litigation against the USDA for discrimination against African American farmers began in August 1997 with two suits brought by black farmers: Pigford v. Glickman and Brewington v. Glickman. However, its origins go back to the 1960s. As a result, a vast USDA agency backlog of unresolved complaints began to build after the USDA Civil Rights Office was closed in 1983. In 2023, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) reintroduced the Justice For Black Farmers Act, legislation aimed to address and correct historic discrimination within federal farm assistance and lending at the USDA, causing black farmers to lose millions of acres of farmland and robbed farmers and their families of the billions of dollars of generational wealth that land represents. In 1910, Black farmers owned 16 million acres of farmland in the U.S. Today, they own just 2.9 million acres and comprise less than 5 percent of the agriculture workforce.

@@apbt067 Its rare in an America in which they needed an amendment to ratify the rights of freed slaves, that someone could possibly think that a win expressedly designed to be given to blacks, could convince themselves that, that wasn't an acknowledgement that it was racism at its core. Whats more to consider?
@629Justme3 ай бұрын
I read that its because they know, but have a serious problem admitting that it was they who were acting like the savages that they wanted to blame others as being like. Somewhat in todays multiracial world, they don't want their children to see particular parts of their heritage as being "mean" to other races. Its unavoidable that systemic racism exists - getting excluded in places - by the exceptionally simple fact that the daggon country had to amend the countries constitution to give social rights to those who were once enslaved. If you have to make it federal law to not exclude certain folks, doesn't that mean they were excluded previous to those amendments? Systemically excluded?

Yes so true. I'm originally from the North. Never lived on a farm or know anything ab't it. Although, my elder relatives did during the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of this new century were farmers in one way or another. For the first time ever in my life I've had the chance to go to Iowa. Had a chance encounter with somebody who came from a long line of farmers who told me that he just recently had to get out of that business because of all the push-back from the government, lack of funding and (just like this video has explained many farmers both black and white) have been pushed out of the industry their land. In many cases it was land that has been taken from them and turned into other types of activity. In fact just to kind of drive home the lesson and in turn teach me a northerner about this situation my airport driver made it a point to, literally drive me by a section of farmland that had been stripped and mowed clean down, to nothing but sod. It was no longer fallow. Was no longer fertile. Wasn't even even green anymore. The section of farmland shown to me, was this horrendous, almost white-beige color. With practically tears in his eyes he said, "Do you see? Do you see that? He said, "Now tell me.... tell me what's a farmer supposed to do with a section of their land carved out and scraped down to nothing like that? Do you think anyone can do anything with that anymore? He said, "I'm so mad. I'm so angry".

@@gabbycarter965 I’m not sure how much it is really that bad for the environment. I’m not doubting that it is. But I don’t think the solution is the right one for climate change. I have a feeling the climate change agenda that the UN is pushing is going to be worse than cow farts for humans.

Many were heavily harassed until they sold it , or had counter poured on the ground as well as having their crops burned along with being so bad breeds and bad seeds. And then when that didn't work they would chased off their property. To add insult to injury some of those places became known as sundown towns. Some of the descendants of said people would later move to cities and lose interest in farming entirely because of these things. Then have the wonderful benefit of being told they don't work hard enough when they work two to three jobs for a place half the size of where they used to live and twice the rent.
