“But now Tyson and Koch-ooh. It’s just like you’re in hell with those guys.” -Carlton Sanders
At the start of the 20th century, one in seven farmers in the United States was Black. In the decades that followed, Black Americans were dispossessed of an estimated 13 million acres of land.
Today, just 20 companies control 95% of chicken farms in the United States-and more than half of those farms are controlled by just four producers: Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride, Sanderson Farms, and Mountaire Farms. When farmers like Carlton Sanders report an issue, they are often penalized.
