This made me so happy!! I went to a cuckoo clock shop in Munich and bought a cuckoo but we did not get a demonstration like this!

Very enjoyable presentation. I wish I could be there in person. When I was a little boy in 1961 I visited my great grandmother 2,000 miles from my home. On her wall hung a very small cuckoo clock not much bigger than a ham sandwich. I would lay on her sofa couch all day long waiting and watching for the little cuckoo bird to come out to anounce the time. It formed a lasting and joyful memory. Then I saw the movie Heidi starting little Shirley Temple where her grandfather sold his giant Cuckoo clock for the funds he needed to bring Heidi home. His clock was huge and beautifully carved. Now, just this week I realized my life long dream to purchase a giant black forest 34" cuckoo clock like the one in Heidi!. It is in layaway at the moment but I hope to have it home soon. I plan to start a collection now and hope to acquire several smaller and less expensive cuckoo clocks to keep this big one company.

Did you get the clock? How do you like it? Have you been able to start a collection yett? I want to get a cuckoo cllock from the black forest as well to add to my clock collection. I think you can get them online too if you can't travel there. I don't have a video of my collection up yet on my channel because I am still trying to get some of them repared and working.

What beautiful works of art . Some say tacky but I disagree ! Skill , imagination , talent , vision . A true testament to Old Tyme craftsmanship . A true national and regional historical cultural treasure ! I have been amazed by the timeless character for a lifetime .As a child I would stare at them pondering the mechanisms and carvings for hours . Thanks for the video !

Interesting note: My 8 day Cuckoo Clock maintains my cat's daily routine. When he hears it chime 7 times in the morning, he does whatever he can to keep my twin-bell alarm clock from sounding off. Apparently they REALLY *HATE* that sound. He used to knock it off the nightstand, but he quickly learned that waking me up 10 minutes in advance is more effective. 🤣

Man it’s hard for me to justify spending the money on one of these clocks, but they are so damn cool and I really want one...
@glenmann624 жыл бұрын
The clocks are really cool but make sure it,s an 8 day clock if you buy one , There are many single day clocks out there that you have to wind each day which becomes old real fast ,The 8 day clocks are nothing more then pulling up a weight 2 seconds and your done ,No more winding for 8 days! I chose to go to Germany and into Triburg to visit all the shops before i made my decision and then had it shipped back to the U.S.. with DHL! Takes about 6-7 weeks to get it ! Ebay sells clocks that also come direct from Triburg but they are expensive and the are the real deal all hand carved and very detailed ! Good luck!

If I ever have the funds, I'd looooooooooooooooooove to come to Germany and hear some cuckoo clocks! I'd especially like to recreate the music box version of "Edelweiss" that was in a cuckoo clock that my American Aunt Terry and Uncle Ian once had when I was younger.

This is the Ex son in law of Gerald Burger , He learned how to make clocks from his father in law but makes them mainly for tourists and they are not of the best quality ! You will see this man putting on a show doing carvings and making trees and leaves that adorn the clocks , he was the first shop i went into of a row of 4 buisnesses , he has a small shop as i left the cuckoo nest i found the shop of Gerald Burger that gave me a lesson in clocks and taught me the differences in clocks which he spent over an hour showing me what most of the clock makers in triburg mass produce ! Gerald has his shop 2 houses down and owns all the buildings in that row and belongs to the MCC which is a very prestigious orginization of Cuckoo clock Carvers...The MCC stands or Master Cuckoo Carvers and Gerald Berger belongs to them ! His clocks are considered to be the most authentic clocks and only uses parts made in germany , Most unsuspecting tourists will buy from house of 1000 Cuckoos and wind up getting mass produced pieces that have plastic people glued to their bases instead of carved wooden ones or the people faces painted by mass production processes and not physically painted by hand ! The trees that adorn these clocks are usually perfectly symetrical but as Gerald informed me there is no such thing as a perfect tree thats why they carve their trees to look natural and unsymmetrical, most tourist clocks have a clock dial that says made in germany right on them ...this is a stamped dial that is also mass produced , at Gerald burgers shop the dials are made from scratch along with all the numbers being hand painted on instead of glued on plastic pieces, The deer and pigs that are sometimes glued on are not natural either as Gerald informed me as he asks me the question ..Did you ever see a pig standing next to a deer in the forest ? For the people that look at a clock and see the man sawing wood or the 2 beer drinkers raising their glasses as the people dance on the top balcony of the clock Gerald tells me that this is all a show and what the tourists come to expect in clocks but the real traditional Cuckoo clocks are that of the ones that just have a bird at the top opening a door and bellowing Cuckoo every quarter hr , another point that Gerald made was the bellows that make that Cuckoo sound are made of plastic and wood , At Gerald Bergers Cuckoo clock house the bellows are made from wood and leather , If you look at the construction of the house at Gerald Bergers Cuckoo clocks you will find thick woods and not some thin veneer as most of the carvers use and many outside faces of his clocks he hand paints and uses stains and varnishes to give his clocks a beautiful patina that the other clock makers just can,t copy ! I hope i was able to open your eyes on some of the things to look for when buying a Cuckoo clock as i was educated by one of the best in the buisness , I just got home last week from the Town of Triburg located in the heart of the black forest and stopped at every clock shop in the town , Gerald Berger took the time to explain to me all the differences about the clocks and educate me in what to look for , of course i wound up buying a beautiful clock from him and am having it shipped back home , i was happy in my purchase to know i was buying from the best and just wanted to add this story of my experience after seeing the man in this video and knowing he is one of those mass producers making hundreds of leaves and trees each day putting on a show for the tourists , Real clock makers are in the backrooms concentrating on their craft and not sitting behind a little wooden table carving trees and leaves all day ...The town is Called Triburg in Germany and is home to Many Cuckoo clock shops including House of 1000 clocks that is also considered to be the world largest Cuckoo clock but again this is a tourist trap and the clocks there are Shit with many parts made in China..See GERALD BERGER @ OLI,S SCHNITZELBAU He is the greatest clock maker in all the Black Forest and your clock will only go up in value being they are the real deal and 100%hand made with german timepieces!

@@coolbluelights Sorry for getting back so late !No i know about those clocks but at the time i was there , there were so many of these shops and there was just so much to see !Im not sure if Hubert Herr actually has their own shop ,I believed Hubert Herr clocks are sold through other shops as one of the many brands these shops carry ! But i will look to see if Hubert herr actually has a shop there and stop and visit as soon as travelling becomes virus free! The town of Triburg was one of my favorite stops in Germany for it,s beauty and the way the town is situated in the hills of the Black Forest with rolling green fields and mountains in the backdrop , A mountain lake with beautiful views and the highest waterfall in Germany ,all with a beautiful Town with lots of history becoming known for it,s wood carving and Clock making the world over !If you own a authentic Cuc koo Clock then chances are it was made right in this beautiful Town ! Look up videos on Triburg right here on KZbin and you,ll see what i mean ! Happy Holidays

I think I might know what you're talking about since I visited a shop in the Black Forest that matches that description. Was there two giant Cuckoo Clocks outside the shop? One is operated by coins, while the other one functions like a normal clock driven by weights.

I just recently discovered, part of my family is from black forest, but their last name was Irish, does that make sense? is this common?
@igehweida7 жыл бұрын
Usually, typical irish names like "o´connor s or MacSomething" etc. aren´t common in Germany, but we have a long history of irish monks and christian families from ireland travelling up and down the merchand roads to the franconians in the south of Germany, used by the celts early on from the 400s to the middle age, so, yes, we have our fair share of irish complexion and black or ginger hair in our society, lol.
