I’m gonna say this after watching all the videos so far Brian, you don’t talk quite as much as Alec, but when you do, your words are profound and very heartfelt. You have such a calming energy. Alec, I sit and listen to you and I get a sense of your extraordinary intellect. You express yourself quite eloquently. ❤❤

Older gay here speaking. The term “fish” being used by gays to describe a girl or female was not ever really accepted by females. It nearly always got back-lash. So people started to use it less and less. The word “fish” being used as gay slang to where it is rarely heard. I haven’t heard that slang used for years, until this video. So that’s the BASIC history of that slang.

I’m glad you guys touch on this subject. My point of view is that women have been “using” gay lingo as long as I have been born- And that is almost 39 years. I have a annoyance with it because they overdo it. Now, when it comes to them using it towards gay men, then we have a problem. I wish a “B” would address me as “sis” “gurl” or what have you…Now the key is that to ask someone first if it’s okay to address such lingo towards you without it having a negative impact. Some may play along with it, some will get you knock on your ass. But these cisgender women have been using our lingo, and other things from us since only Heaven knows. S/N: And if any hetero male using gay lingo, then he ain’t hetero, I said what I said. Thank you Brian and Alec and the Brown Bros. for discussing this topic!

Language is so fascinating; dialects and discreet languages. In Britain, before legislation removed the legal punishment for homosexuality, there was a ‘language’ to help gay men identify each other called polari. Quite a few words from that have found their way into everyday British English. English, anyway, differs between countries of which a form of English is a major mother tongue. Some of our ordinary words might offend in American English; while several words in US English are completely different in meaning from British English. George Bernard Shaw said ‘we were two countries divided by the same language’. I think we should treasure differences - so long as there’s no unpleasant intent. And one KNOWS when anything malign is intended. I’ve often wondered why gay men call each other ‘gurrl” or ladies, etc. Is it embracing a stereotype and making it ‘yours’ like some gay men use ‘faggot’ happily? We use ‘mug’ and ‘clocked’ the same way in ‘straight’ Britain, in my generation anyway. Very, very interesting video. I’d LOVE to be able to have a proper conversation with you all about it.

A fascinating conversation dealt with in a very respectful way. In England we use mug as face - mug shot, ugly mug, etc. Or a mug is someone who allows himself to be used, a pushover. Another great video.

Alec hit it on the head talking about cultural differences. When I heard bro say dat word that took me by surprise. Fish has been taken to mean the way a woman's virgina smells which would turn a gay man off. Another example, my Hispanic friend has me in his phone by my name and negro beside it. I am like WTF?? But Negro just means blk in Spanish and he has a cousin with the same name so he has primo by his name. But I made dude just put my damn last name n his phone 🤣🤣🤣

Hi Brian and Alec. Great to see you again. I really enjoy the effective discussions about social issues frame what those issues are about in authentic, emotionally compelling ways that resonate with people values; such as highly charged language. Some people aren't sure whether to support the citizens of the community because they erroneously think that the citizens of the community are different than straight people. The community are everyday people who want the same respect and chance as everyone else to pursue health and happiness, earn a living, be safe in their communities, serve their country and take care of their love ones. Individuals simply don't understand the inequalities communities face on a daily basis which includes language. When conversations and language are rooted in stereotypes it harms the daily injustice that the community face. Thank you for gradually expanding awareness and understanding. 🤗

“Beat that face” was translated from a girl or woman putting on or wearing makeup. aka Beat that Face. “To Beat” is to put it on. “Is Beat” is to compliment or acknowledge make-up well worn. Today, of course, it not makeup so much since rarely worn, but more “beat” as a compliment or a statement.

Happy Sunday Alec and Brian thanks for talking about this I found it very inspirational. I myself grew up be in called all kinds of names sissy, the f word, the a word and all because of how I walked or talked . I used to get mad and vocalize my frustration against those persons that did that to me but one day my grandmother told me if I ignored them it would hurt them more because I wasn’t paying them any attention. And it did it annoyed the heck out of them but I decided to love my life for me and not for anyone else because it’s what I think about myself and feel that matters not what anyone else thinks of me. Again thank you both for sharing. Much love and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Hope this helps with origin of “mug”: face? Mean, here, is “hostile” or “nasty,” and mug is slang for “face.” Mug in this sense can be traced back to the 18th century and may, fun fact, come from drinking mugs painted with or shaped like grotesque faces. So, you wouldn't really call a beautiful or pleasant face a mug.7

This has been quite enlightening. Thanks for the education. But for ole me, "bitch" and "niggah" are ranked up there as the most derogatory terms that can be used on any gender. I'm a 60's baby. Growing up in that era, those words were used by white supremacists to degrade people of color and other ethnicities. My sister and I were called bitches and niggers on the school bus. And when we defended ourselves, we were the ones that were kicked off the bus to walk 4-5 miles home. To make matters worse, the bus driver and the white supremacists went to the same church we did when my parents were students at that university where the church was located. Based on what I've experienced, those two words will never sit well with me. Continued blessings on you both and keep enlightening us. Much love! ❤💙💜🖤

2:20 actually the term fish, sometimes called tuna is actually derogatory in nature as it originally described the smell of a woman's genitalia. Thus gay men would say stuff like "I don't like fish" or "I don't eat fish" in direct reference to women's parts. It's actually a very misogynistic and sexist term. At least in its original form. But things change over time. Now the word fish has been toned down like the words b**ch or hoe and so it doesn't carry as much weight as it used to. It's still pretty disrespectful though. I'd personally never call a woman fish even if she's a close friend. It's almost like them calling us fag or "stabane" in my part of the world. An absolute no no. But to each their own I guess. Love these sit downs you guys do.. Love hearing your stories. You delt with this in a very respectful way. Kudos guys.

Yes I understand what you're saying about the fish situation, but the average female in the straight world will take offense to it because it means something else in a straight world which straight men will use or rather say in reference to the female as not smelling clean, so one word fish meaning two different things in different circumstances. So one might have to be careful using that word around certain groups of females. Yes Alex I understand what you're saying there about the word being derogatory in Jamaica and you have to understand who is stating that word straight men, but in America here a straight man using that word fish can also be perceived as a derogatory word in reference to a woman and how she smelled, and move already covered what it means into the alphabet community. Personally I don't use the word at all but if one is going to use it you have to use it in the right setting which is only the alphabet community. The word Punk is one of those words that have evolved over the years if you go back 40 years or so and you use the word Punk with someone that was an invitation to kick that person's ass or get your ass kicked but I have noticed now that with the younger generation it has evolved and it's not doesn't take on the same gravity I would say. But it still has to be used properly somewhat delicate don't you think?
