Imo one of the rare great pop songs of the last couple of decades. A shimmering gem amongst piles of garbage. Man made existentialism into a catchy, cool song which went over most people's heads because they only listened to the chorus. Released at the same time I got my very first job as a delivery driver, so heard it a lot back then, came here to appreciate and reminisce :)

To me, this song is a person questioning the existence of god. Apparently the narrator is very depressed and going through a time of turmoil and doubt, but still very much feels there is more to life than just chaos and causation. While the narrator is deep within an existential battle of sorts, he realizes that he doesn't want to exist in a world if, indeed there is no one true designer or creator. He would rather, not exist, and be stardust (where the gold comes from) amongst the void of the universe.
@ashtonhutchason30387 жыл бұрын
Soda Spider precisely, he’s saying if god isn’t real then what is the point of our existence? Why are we here? If god doesn’t exist, he doesn’t want to either. Science and religion conflicted, he sees the side of science but believes faith is more powerful that what you can observe, it’s deeper than that. Underrated and extremely powerful, profound song in my opinion.

Can i just say.... KUDOS to you, who made this. This is pretty much bang on. Just a tiny little part in the second verse, 2 words are wrong. "I feel THE WEIGHT of something beyond them...". And if you listen carefully you can hear it. And it makes more sense than "i feel the way of something beyond them.." but absolutely brilliant. You even had the black and gold x11! And it shows that you haven't cheated on this, you have put eord for word what you think it is, and literally 2 words are out. I think this is great though. 👏 👏❤

Like any form of poetry, lyrics are subject to personal interpretation based on one's frame of reference. I liked that a link was provided to an interview with the lyricist who acknowledges that the song is about God although that admission should not IMO limit the interpretations of the listener. My daughter read the lyrics to me many years ago and talked about how the song was descriptive of her faith - "I feel a way of something beyond them, but I don't see what I can feel". And that is faith. "If vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real." So vision is not the only validation. That young woman was something else. I miss her, especially her insight.

TheVasculus exactly. “ if vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn’t real” if seeing is believing and you can’t see god then how is he real? He’s questioning his entire faith because he’s been believing in something that he can’t even see.

don't know why no one has put this together but its obviously about a guy and his feelings about science and religion. he isn't hurt about his gf, its God he wants to be with cause he is conflicted about evolution and science. "The apes climbed down from from the trees, grew tall and started talking" shows evolution and "..I'm filled to the top with fear that's its all just a bunch a matter" sayung he doesn't believe it all can be made of matter and atoms! I hope this helps people understand that he isn't hurt over a woman but scared and hurt over science and his religion.

First time I've heard this song and I thought this was obvious. He is in-between materialism/rationality and his God. Basically facing the resulting nihilism and cognitive dissonance, being somewhat unsure how to precede. Then stating he doesn't want to exist without his God and the objective meaning it brings.

I love how few people get this song, but it is deceptively simple. It's about human apprehension of God, and how lost we are without Him, regardless of who you think He is. Best line "If vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real". This is about the inability to prove the past. The universe could have been created five minutes ago with crumbling ruins, implanted memories, and half-digested food, but we don't believe this to be true because deep inside, we know there's a past

@Josuatik It's a song about god, Sam Sparro did an interview somewhere about it. Look it up, and FYI I am an athiest, i've never believed in a God, none of my friends or family have ever done so either so I have never related anything to God. In fact, there have been a few cases where someone has tried to convert me in to a religion and it's backfired for them. Perhaps you should read/listen to the lyrics of the song. The song has no references to a girl, sex or any other component of love.
