I do the same thing when I look at the results, see which of the big time names I was able to beat. So be super proud of your birds. The big timers play the numbers game to increase their odds is all, there birds aren’t any better.
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that does this! :D Yes, the big dogs have great bloodlines but can afford to pay to enter way more birds. At the end of the day it only takes one great bird, but being able to enter a ton of birds makes all the difference. It is a numbers game for sure. I would have loved to have activated all my birds for the 450 mile race but could only afford to enter one.
@zorrosracingpigeonloft2148 Жыл бұрын
@@RFRP I haven’t gotten around to making the video yet. But I will be explaining the numbers game in the near future to benefit the smaller fanciers. I am sending to fewer OLR this year but sending more birds to those OLR to increase my odds.

Do you resettle these birds in your loft, or are they going to be loft birds/breeders only? If you re-settle, how do you do it?
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
That is a great question, Adam! These I’m going to use as breeders or sell them to someone else to use as breeders. It’s generally not worth the risk of losing a proven bird to try and rehome it. That said it can be done. Having an aviary that th ey can spend a lot of time in is helpful. Using hairspray or hair moose you can reduce the width of their flight feathers such that they can only fly very little. This allows them to go out with the others and come back in but not actually fly. Maybe I’ll make a video about it
@Sulaiman.galant Жыл бұрын
I will definately put the bird in the breeding loft

Do u have to activate all ur birds for the final race or just whichever you want ??
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
The 450 was an optional race (after the normal 350 final) that requires an additional activation fee. Breeders can pick or choose how many and which of their birds to enter. I would have entered all of my remaining birds but only could afford to pay for one.
@abcloft302 Жыл бұрын

Hi James, nice looking birds, I’m sure your happy with your results. Just curious about something, why wouldn’t you send them all to the final 450 mile race? Don’t you want to test them all through the whole duration of the OLR? I’m only a second year member and everyone is always telling me that I need to test everything and not to hold them back, so just curious why you felt it wasn’t nessacary to send them. Thanks
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and great question. I would have loved to send them all, but it cost an extra $250 per bird and I only had enough money to enter one in that final. If I had the funds I’d send way more birds out to OLRs to see how they do and test the bloodlines. I need a GoFundMe 😆😆

Congratulations James! I was just reading the rules over at their website. It states that "birds will be vaccinated before entering the race loft" Do they give the vaccinations or do you do it before shipping? Will you be entering this year's race also?
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend!! Appreciate that! OLRs will vaccinate birds on arrival but that is typically meant to be the booster shot. So yes, I do it 2 weeks or so before shipping and then they’ll get boosters upon arrival. I do plan to participate in BGR again this year 🤞🏻 You?

@@RFRP Thanks for the info, James. Oh boy, I'm really tempted but not sure I can swing the fees - on top of my club fees. Hmm, may have to sell some sheep :)
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
Ha! that's relatable! You sell some sheep and I'll sell Watson, then we can afford to enter birds :D Do you have a sheep farm?
@lychgatelofts9189 Жыл бұрын
@@RFRP It's a bit of everything, James. Sheep (meat/wool) goats (milk/cheese), horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens and of course the pigeons. Oh, and two border collies. We really ramped up production during lockdown, but this year, the cost of hay has skyrocketed so we do need to cut back. It may be next year for the BGR. Always love to see Watson! I wish ours had more herding instinct. They're extremely smart but have no interest in the sheep.
@RFRP Жыл бұрын
@@lychgatelofts9189 Oh wow! Sounds like a cool setup (and a lot of work)!! I often fantasize having a small farm life. Sadly, we are looking to rehome Watson. His constant barking at squirrels isn't working with our tightly packed neighborhood. His sire has titles in conformation, herding, and nose work. His dam titles in conformation. Loads of potential, just not a great fit right now. :(
