Except that series was made by a Japanese man and isn't faux history. Ubisoft is a French company and they just felt it in their balls to make the protagonist of their first game set in Asia to be a black man, in a series that has almost nonexistent representation of Asian people. You couldn't blame any nationality for not liking the depiction of a foreigner saving their nation from the evil Templars. And that is adding onto the fact that it makes absolutely no sense. Assassins are supposed to be as unremarkable as possible, they are meant to blend in, or at least not stand out. Now what sense does it make then, to have the only foreigner in Asian history WHOSE ONLY SIGNIFICANCE WAS THAT HE WAS VERY DIFFERENT AND STOOD OUT IMMENSELY IN ISOLATIONIST JAPAN, to be the MAIN LEAD IN A FKING ASSASSINS CREED GAME.

Brother there are a million other games set in the same time period where you can play as a japanese samurai. Why do you care about this one having a non japanese one in specific? It's not like the protagonist being african will erase all asian representation from the game. Likely the majority of all other npcs WILL be japanese, only the protagonist wont be. I doubt most people who are complaining about this are even that invested about AC and wouldve gone "batchest" if the protagonist was japanese. Also, i havent played assassin's creed mirage, but i heard its protagonist is the reincarnation of freaking loki. So even if the character himself is "arab", i find it very insulting as an iraqi that the protagonist is the reincarnation of some nordic god. But guess what? I didnt care about it enough to complain about that fact in particular. No one did. So why is it when a black guy is the protagonist of a non african setting that everyone is suddenly mad?

It's such a piss poor statement to make that can easily be refuted, to the point that I can't take you serious in any capacity. Also, some corrections for your first comment. You edited it and somehow still failed to proofread with the proficiency of at least an eighth grader. "dual", not duel (that's a battle of some variety) "barely", not barley (that's a grain) "there is press releases" is not proper English, which is what your last sentence reads out as. The correct contraction is "there're" which is short for "there are". "There are press releases" actually reads like a sentence not written by a twelve year old on a bender.

Even from a literary sense it's a probably great choice. The Oda Nobunaga period is one of the most important parts of Japan's history, and Nobunaga being easily top 3 important historical figures in Japan, so the period choice makes sense for an Assassin's Creed game which usually only spend 1-2 games in a given locale/period. Yasuke being the black retainer (still a samurai) to Nobunaga not only places that playable character near to the central intrigue of the time, but also immediately establishes some level of "fish-out-of-water" element that can be used to help on-road the player into the setting. The game will probably have clunky writing and awful pacing, because it's a Ubisoft and Assassin's Creed game, but it's still a fantastic literary choice. Also, like, there are two protagonists, right? It's not like you don't get to play as an ethnically Japanese character for like at least half the game I'm pretty sure.

Tbh while I consider immersion to be priority number 1 if the MC is their own character that you play as it can be even more immersive than a traditional silent protagonist. FFS my favorite game series is Drakengard/NieR and every main character is distinct with their own baggage and trauma. I'm not _that_ clinically insane nor am I a sexy pale skinned white hair high heeled android. As long as you can see the world from the protag's perspective it doesn't matter if they're black, white, Asian, male, female you can be immersed.

@kingcasual-casual-gaming-5366 4 ай бұрын
@@stoeptegel4382 While I agree, I also disagree. The way japan genderbends a character is more a recreation of a person in another setting. Like, for example: In Fate (any actually) King Arthur, who was undoubtedly a man, is a woman as a re-creation to fight for the fate of the world. But Fate does not take place in the Medieval times where he would exist as a genderbend version of himself (flashbacks excluded because they only serve narrative purpose and to not confuse the viewer they kept the appearance consistant). Other characters in other anime, like in Vinland Saga, are very accurate in their depiction and their appearance. The core take away, from my pov about this, is more of: "Does it take place in the time the person existed or not. If not, no one cares. Otherwise, genderbend a named character in their story is kinda odd". Maybe I miss some anime where that actually happens, if so you can name me some because I cannot remember in my 20+ years as an anime consumer that there was an Anime that depicts the life of a person of historical appearance as a genderbend version of him-/herself that wasnt a comedy, satire or a skit.

We will sadly never know if he truly was a samurai or not, but I think people want to believe one way or the other solely based on their feelings.

I find it really wierd. When the anime came out a lot of people were excited and hyped about his story, thoght it was heavily criticized because it wasnt hisorical but just a random show with magic shoved into it. And now its the complete opposite. Youd think gamers and anime fans are in the same ballpark
@TrueGamer22887

It’s because 1. That anime didn’t sell itself as a historical piece 2. That anime was made by people who love the figure and want to mythologize him like the Japanese often do. That is not why Ubisoft chose him and they’ve been very transparent about that. Their using him more as a political pawn to start controversy just like is happening now.

For starters... people ARE actually mad at everything, not only the character in question. Second, there has been a lot of prejudice against Japanese and Asian culture in general in the gaming industry. Asian games are being looked down upon, getting banned in multiple platforms for content tamer than AAA releases, forced to change to "adhere to western standards" even tho fans are not looking for that in those games (otherwise they would be playing western games instead). Then comes AC, which had been relatively accurate with their protagonists over the years, up until the Japanese one. Why is it? Why did they pick the Japanese game to not have both protagonists be Japanese? Had they done that with Victory, Syndicate, Odyssey, etc, it wouldn't be as bad. A little bit silly, but not as bad.

I mean it's not like there's any shortage of games set in Japan with Japanese samurai protags. That's probably the biggest reason, because it's a setting that's been done to death both by Japanese and western devs and they wanted to stand out. Hell, the AC teams has clearly been resistant to doing a game in Japan in the past probably for this reason.

Yasuke (弥助) is a combination of 弥 (meaning far away in distance) and 助 (meaning helper) so we can understand Yasuke's name meaning is a helper from far away. But in unusual opinion, Yasuke (in hiranaga is やすけ) is a combination of 闇 (in hiranaga is やみ - Yami) means darkness and suke (a common end in Japanese males name) which mean his name is just a wordplay and it's means dark-skinned man (because darkness is dark color and he is a man).

I am Japanese. Only upper class bushi was called Samurai before Edo era. You need to have a surname and a long sword to become a bushi in feudal Japan class system. Yasuke had only first name and a shortest sword. So he was most likely not even a bushi. If he was a samurai he would have died fighting for his Masters when they were attacked. And after his master died he would have committed seppuku but instead he surrendered. He was never injured which means he never fought for his master when the enemy was using guns and arrows. So this is cultural appropriation with history falsification.

Frankly, I don't give a fuck if Yasuke was or was not a Samurai historically. I do not give a fuck if he was even a real person. What I do care about is the reason as to why, out of all possible people they could have chosen to be a protagonist...they picked him. Japan, was one of the ethnically least diverse countries at the time...and you make the protagonist a black man? I suppose my question wouldn't be "Why does it bother you he is black?", my question would be "Why did it matter to you so much that he is black that you went out of your way to make him that way?". Because let's be real here, they knew what they were doing. This isn't an innocent little creative decision that people are reading too much into. And I think it's at least understandable with how preachy modern-day entertainment has gotten, coupled with its general lack of quality, that this pissed people off. This move was tone-deaf at best and antagonistic at worst. Plus, you know, Ubisoft releasing buggy messes of games really didn't do them any favors either. And the high price point is just the kick in the dick on top of this whole debacle.

So is the argument "The country had a very small number of minorities, so why did they pick the minority?" As if minorities aren't allowed to be playable characters in the setting they're in? Don't you think there could be stories about discrimination in the story? Around the fact that there's so much racism. I haven't read the script at all, but yeah, there's probably a reason for picking the guy, and the fact you made a weird conspiracy theory instead of just thinking, "Huh, wonder what type of story they want to tell with him" is weird. Especially because your idea of the fact they intentionally picked a black guy filled you with anger. Like, I don't know if you see the irony, but you getting mad and ranting that he's a minority makes you racist by definition, and I hope you approve on yourself cause that's not a normal thing to ranting about.

You wishing me well, not ill is a breath of fresh air in internet discourse, I have to say. But it seems like you didn't understand my point. I am fully in favor of using stories to explore racial themes. Just recently I watched Blue-Eye Samurai and the show was in a word "excellent" and deals with the theme of racism and identity very well. My point wasn't that this story shouldn't be told or doesn't deserve to be told. My question and the underlying implication of my question was why this specifically was the story they chose to tell and why they announced it in a way that would obviously spark controversy? I mentioned preachy media for a reason. The trend of using stories to convey a message and preach to your audience your virtue has been going on for a good while now. And people are sick of it. It's definitely possible that this isn't going to be the for this game. But I don't think you can blame people for their reaction to this kind of thing when there has been a consistent trend of stories using race as a marketing gimmick and those stories being bad. I'm sure there are many people out there who just want a Japanese person as the protagonist of this game. I'm sure there are many who do for racist reasons. I just want a good story and a good game. And if this really is a creative choice rather than a choice made for political reasons, they better make damn sure they give Yasuke his due and not turn him into yet another criticism shield.

@@miep3934 Hey man, again I just want to begin by wishing you well, I hope you'll continue having a wonderful day. I do think it's okay for Ubisoft and other corporations to want to spread the message that racism is bad, it's a pretty good message, and I don't think there was an executive meeting in which they thought the game was going to turn out bad, so they made a black character to try and shield the game from criticism, even a bad corporation like Ubisoft doesn't try to make a bad game on purpose. I'm pretty sure someone in the company just thought it could be cool. But I can also say, I think we all know this isn't going to be a good game. As cool as it would be for Ubisoft to explore the concepts of racism in general, the comment section made me realize Ubisoft has a history of not really tackling the subject well. I think that's really the only thing we should care about, is if the game is going to be good or not. I still kinda disagree with you man, but you did make me think about the situation a bit more and I thank you for that. Hope you have a great day!

Let me preface this comment with the following: I'm not against black characters or even protagonists in videogames. I adored Bayek, Adewale, Aveline and even Achilles (at least, in AC3, before they turned him into a psychopath in Rogue). Each of these characters served a specific purpose in their stories and narratively worked within the stories that were being told. With that being said, the most noteworthy aspect of Yasuke's character is, quite literally, the colour of his skin. It is the entire reason why Nobunaga was interested in him. That's the whole point. This makes Yasuke quite possibly the first "token black guy" in history. Can Yasuke fit in the story they want to tell? Sure, I guess, but in a story about feudal Japan, some guy who was given samurai status just because Nobunaga thought it was funny, isn't going to be very interesting. Like Farfa said, the game being good or bad doesn't hinge on Yasuke being the protagonist. But he simply was not an interesting historical character. Having him specifically as the protagonist of the game is a very deliberate and obviously politically charged decision, and already opened the doors to aggressive historical revisionism. (Just take a look on the wikipedia page for Yasuke).

And if it's so unimportant - why can't we have Ryan Gosling play a black revolutionary in a movie? Or have Arnold Schwarzenegger portrait an Imam? It's not about realism, the reason why I feel a bit weird about it is because most AC games have had protagonists that were ethnically tied to the setting. Altair/Syrian/Levant, Ezio/Italian/Italy Connor/Kanien'kehá:ka/North America, Arno/French/France, Jacob&Evie/British/London, Bayek/Egyptian/Egypt, Alexios,Kassandra/Greek/Ancient Greece, Eivor/Norse/Norway&England. There are some exceptions to this and protagonists that have less ties to the setting, but those games are in the minority and are mostly spinoffs. I don't think ac is purposefully racist towards Asians or Japanese, but I think it is okay for us to be disappointed that it didn't follow even the ethnicities of the other duo protagonist AC games in representing two characters of our ethnicity.

Edit: I do want to say again, I got no problems with you, genuinely hope you have a good day, I just don't think what you're fighting for is great reasoning.

>First AC game in Japan, something asked since forever >Set in the most active historical period of japanese history, the Sengoku period >Dozens of historical figures that were relevant to the power struggle that was happening, with lots of records full of details about them >Chooses a woman, which is a ninja, and the only black person in the records to be the protagonists >Of all the options, they literally choose the 3 figures with less registers possible in the Sengoku period, ninjas, a woman and Yasuke Yeah, I don't get why people are mad. It's almost like they made a game for people who like japanese history with people who don't care about japanese history. Main topic aside, of course that's the only thing being discussed. Idk if Farfa stopped buying new games but the absurd price for questionable extras such as playing the game early is something that been happening for a while, people already shit talked companies about this (and still do), but the reality is that there are people who still buy these editions so the companies keep selling it (while also selling season pass, battle pass and other things later on). There is no gameplay trailer to discuss, and even if there was, it's AC, it's likely going to be just like any AAA game those days, nothing amazing but also not offensive bad to a point where you stop playing because of it. It's also been a while since the last AC game. Results aside, Ubisoft has been trying ever since the Syndicate fiasco to give more time between games. The last mainline AC game was Valhalla released in 2020. Last year there was Mirage, but that's a shorter and more in the sidelines kind of game. It's also a topic that anyone can coment on, regardless of playing Assassin's Creed or, even, games. Not much different from the discussions that ended up rising with Queen Cleopatra from Netflix. Most people likely wouldn't even watch it in the first place, but everyone wanted to say something about it. Just like me, and you, which has a YGO channel and for some reason the first non YGO content you make in a long while is this.

I mean nobody was complaining about any of the other protagonists being completely fictional. Nobody cared that the MC of the one set in the american revolution was just some guy and not George Washington or Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson. Like the choice to not use one of the big names was almost certainly intentional and to allow for more freedom for the story and characters, and nobody would be complaining if he was a random samurai they made up so this arguement seems very forced

@Bladexeno what do you mean the series that has people of the ethnic group of the place its set in as the race of the protagonist so he or she can blend into crowds and lose pursuers. Yasuke makes no sense to be an Assassin. As a major supporting character with the Ear of Nobunaga however, a much better idea.

If the way the main character looks doesn't matter, then the way every character looks doesn't matter. So make all the Japanese locals white, or brown, or different asian. Because it doesn't matter. That also implies that the way any character in any game looks doesn't matter. So make all the characters look exactly the same. Because it doesn't matter. If looks don't matter then people can't get angry at Eve from stellar blade being sexualised. Because the way she looks doesn't matter. It also means that after we get a model to facescan into a game, we don't have to change the way they look for diversity and representation, because the way they look doesn't matter. But according to companies like sweet baby inc. you have to make sure that people feel like they are being represented in your media or that's unfair. So do the Japanese get represented in a game that's set in their own country or not? Where they make up 99.9999% of the population? "Oh but they are being represented with all the other people in game being japanese." You know who else is the main character in every other story set in Japan? Japanese people, who are ancestrally and genetically Japanese. So which is it? Does the way a character looks matter or not?

First: You aren't arguing against the video, you just are arguing against the vague idea of the person you think you are against. When you have to do that you look crazy and dumb. Where the fuck did looks don't matter, stellar blade or sweetbaby inc come into this. Second: You say that Japanese people are main characters of most stories in Japan, you do realise that this is actually a point against you? If most stories are on way then it is arguably an upside to go against that. -_- Third: THERE IS A JAPANESE PROTAGONIST. You either just don't know what you are talking about or are willfully ignorant or....don't like they are a girl (Even though female ninjas/assassins are very culturally known in Japan). There isn't an option where you don't look idiotic. Fourth: Once again no one argued "looks don't matter" in a totality. The best I can give you is that here people are saying that it shouldn't matter Yasuke is black and you somehow conflate that to meaning nothing about appearance matters, no, a character who has the trait they are a foreigner being a foreigner is not a character flaw, and complaining about it doesn't make sense. In that sense yes, there looks don't matter since the point literally is they are different from the norm. Fifth: You literally give the point that Japan is being represented with it's culture in the setting and the vast majority of people....and never argue against it. What? Sixth: Ignoring grifters/journalists (it is a whole other issue that people like you think journalists, which profit on sensationalism must represent the whole), the annoyance at Stellar Blade is usually because there is an EXPECTATION on woman to meet unrealistic standards and sexual appeal. When your stance changes from the appreciation of beauty and sexuality to the EXPECTATION of it, such that you start to criticise other characters as being "ugly" (which hilariously they often are not which is also kind of concerning) then you are just textbook misogynistic. Seventh: And no, just because you can find one person that can meet that standard (as in a model whose whole job is try to and chase those unrealistic standards...) doesn't make it not unrealistic, do you have basic critical thinking skills. With sweet baby inc I do mostly agree that the company itself is highly questionable. Being against the practice of requiring sensitivity and inclusionary advice is kind of weird though because that really is quite normal, changing stuff to make sure you fit within your target audience is common practice, and if you are not that target then frankly, tough luck. (There is actually a more nuanced argument to this but this is already too long and I don't feel like making it here since like I said at the start, NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THIS)

Finally got to visit that harbor specializing in Gunkan Suships that I've been curious about for a while! The premium "Shari" here is limited to 2000 Suships a year, and uses specially developed smooth aged rice, giving it extra boldness not found anywhere else. The classy atmosphere made my heart sing, too. The Gunkan Suship served had a perfect balance of vinegar, nigiri, shine, and shape, demonstrating exquisite artisanship. The owner told me, "We are introducing rich yet mellow scented EDO-FRONT red vinegar in the near future," which I'm really looking forward to. However, I was disappointed the surrounding seas were a little noisy... so, giving it 4 stars with hope for improvements in the future.
