As a disabled person, I found this conversation very interesting and stimulating. There was neither glorification nor victimisation of disability and what it entails. Sweta was super nuanced and articulate in her perspectives and if a disabled person can go a little beyond victimising themselves, I have a feeling that they would align themselves with Sweta's pov and thoughts.

I think Guru had one of the best disability representations in Bollywood. Vidya and Madhavan are the best part of the movie.

@@urjitawani. thank you for replying. ☺️. Just a suggestion…this segment can be also used in for series…I mean epic series such as Breaking Bad…of-course it can’t be done in one or two episodes. But it would be amazing!!

I think for me the best disable character portrayal has been done in movie sairat. The best friend character played by tanaji galgunde they didn't show him the victim of circumstances needed a glorified the achievement he has the show him as human as possible.

I love Rajan Damodaran in Taare Zameen Par too. What a lovely portrayal - sympathetic yet never once making him a victim in the narrative

Black copies so many scenes from The Miracle Worker - surprised there was no plagiarism discussion. And the abuse towards a child with disability that is romanticized was given such a free pass, you guys should have been wayy more critical

Hey! We appreciate your feedback. We did mention about the first half being a copy of The Miracle Worker. It may have come across as less weightage was given to that - probably because we went on to highlight the other aspects of disability - that seemed more important at that point. And with regards to the abuse, I personally had no intention of romanticizing it, especially as someone who lives with a disability. In the context of the timeline of the story and the year when it was released, we did mention how it must have been okay for the writer/director to have that in the script. I'll however be more mindful while discussing such issues in the future.

@@swetamantrii I don’t think you were romanticizing the abuse, but i did think the movie did, and i recall Aamir Khan got into a lot of trouble back when Black came out for saying exactly this, that this isn’t the way to treat children or disabled people so that discussion already existed. He did get criticized heavily for going against a movie everybody lauded overwhelmingly but the conversation was there. Of course can’t blame you all for not knowing/remembering or covering everything in the zeitgeist, but i do wish that was addressed more. Appreciated the rest of the conversation

Urjita lost some cred for saying Aishwarya was good in Dhoom 2 given that her acting was absolutely atrocious in that and the main sore thorn

Agree. Being an Aishwarya Rai fan, I feel many of her other movies are good. Like her performance in Guru, Provoked, Guzaarish will standout when compared to Dhoom 2

To counter Sweta then everybody should be casted as per their roles aise toh kal spies bolenge ki hume bhi acting karni he to act like a spy why not cast old person instead of an actor to play old persons role or army man to play as an army man it completely ruins the art please understand this i respect disabled people and totally understand where she comes frm but this point of casting disabled fr a disabled role is senseless to me

I think there’s merit to what you’re saying, as actors should get to play all types of roles, but I think the point in this context is that disabled actors have more difficulty getting work than non-disabled actors. So, when actually casting for a disabled character, it would make sense to at least cast a disabled actor in the role. Ideally, disabled and non-disabled actors would get opportunities to play roles of all types; for example, Marlee Matlin, who is deaf, played a gun-toting FBI agent on Priyanka Chopra’s show _Quantico,_ but it’s still quite rare, and Ms. Matlin is an Oscar-winning actress who has had a long and distinguished career. Actually, in a sense, PC’s casting on that show itself reflects a similar approach regarding race/ethnicity, in that ABC cast an Indian actress to play an American character, and rewrote the original backstory to make her of (half) Indian descent. Anyway, it’s a discussion worth having.
