The reason the pilots weren’t really panicking during the crash was because they are 160th SOAR pilots. They are Army special operations pilots who are called “night stalkers” and are some of the best pilots in the world. Also the reason you stay off the walls is because if a bullet ricochets on a flat surface like a wall then it will travel along that wall and hit you if you’re leaning on it.

Most military pilots are going to be like that. Hell most professional commercial pilots are like that. Pilots are trained to stay calm when shit goes sideways and depend on your training. It's why we have check lists, why we constantly practice emergency procedures, why we have to stay current on everything we can. We're responsible for every single person on that aircraft, and in the case of the military also the mission itself.

@@Kosh800 not to take anything away from your service/ abilities. But SOAR pilots are the best of the best. It has been recorded and hypothesized that Elvis Wolcott intentionally dipped his bird at the last minute nose down to try and save the lives of the rest of the crew. If I'm not mistaken there is a transcript of either him or Pilot Mike Durant in which you can clearly hear them, after being hit by RPG fire sounding calm and relaxed as they go through their checklist pre-crash. Again not to take away from any other pilot, but the SOAR guys are, without a shadow of a doubt, the best helicopter pilots in the world and thus would sound calm and collected as they were being shot down.

@@austinphillips4673 Nothing about the elite SOAR units goes against what I said. She said that they were calm, you said it's because they were SOAR, and I simply said that it's because all pilots are trained to be calm like that. That sort of reaction isn't exclusive to elite SOAR units. It's common amongst most pilots.

No they didn't know they would die. Lee VanArsdale, a former Delta operator portrayed in the movie (He's the seccond in command in JOC with Gen Garrison), said that Delta operators never go on suicide mission and that both Shugart and Gordon knew that it was dangerous as hell, but they thought they could defend the crew until the convoy arrived. Several times Gordon call on the radio asking where was the convoy. Unfortunately, the convoy got lost and while trying to find a route to Super 64 site, they met with McKnight's convoy and helped them get back to base. Lee VanArsdale words: "We (Delta operators) may be overconfident sometimes but we never go on suicide mission".

The opening scene was showing international aid being dropped for the starving people and Aidids men showed up and took it by force. They knew Americans couldn't fire on them unless they fired first and used the peacekeeping ROE's to their advantage. Its similar to tactics used by the Taliban to avoid gunships and drone strikes. A Taliban fighter could literally be shooting at you and simply drop his rifle and raise his arms in the air until the gunship passes. There are recorded cases of gunships hovering high up waiting for fighters to pick their weapons back up in order to engage them.

I'll add on that, some of the veterans have stated in regards to that scene. That if they had even seen a technical (or any crew served weapon) they would have opened fire on it regardless. The Somalis knew this too, as in actuality, none have been reported as being seen active during the majority of their deployment. The scene works perfectly for the movie though in getting the point across.

@@phillydelphia8760 True, but it was not just Marine Air that was active, but boots on the ground with some armor patrolling and cleaning out weapons caches and fighters. That was why the warlords decided to hide out. But their efforts was done during Bush Sr. Admin. Corrupt Clinton installed "rules of engagement policies" that were idiotic, as shown in the first scenes. That was why the warlords went back into business. Bin Laden was in the Sudan, and committed his forces to help. Many of the more serious attacks using IED's and RPGs were his people. That led up to the Blackhawk down events as Garrison was told to "catch the criminals". My book Fatal Flaws Book 3 1975-Sept. 11, 2001 goes into detail on that time.

The reason the Delta operator tells Grimes to stay away from the walls isn't actually because of rockets and explosions. It is because a bullet can strike the wall at an angle and ricochet, following parallel to the wall 1 or 2 feet away and still carry enough force to be lethal. Colonel McKnight basically resolved himself to act like a British officer on the field, not ducking or dodging gunfire, as a result his men saw him very much as a godlike savior with how much confidence he portrayed.

When Bush Sr. sent in the Marines months earlier, they used all of their assets and kept the warlords afraid allowing the UN to deliver foods and medicines. Most don't know this, but we were also fighting al-Qaeda during Blackhawk Down.

Humvees are not bulletproof they are just vehicles, they don't have armor plating. Humvees when taken in later years into the middle east where mines and explosive devices were deadly they were enforced more to help protect those inside from such devices. But Humvee's aren't armored vehicles or tanks, they are made to move people around, not withstand gunfire or shells.

Idiot Clinton replaced them with just light infantry under strict "rules of engagement" Seeing the change the warlords went back out. Aided by Bin Laden's men the attacks got worse and more often. Garrison was told to arrest the criminals, which led to Blackhawk down.

The soldiers were all issued hearing protection, but virtually none of them wore it. This was because they didn't want their hearing to be impaired in any way, so that they could hear the enemy, but this was always a mistake, because everything was so loud that their hearing was impaired all of the time anyway, and they often suffered some level of permanent hearing loss, as well. But until recently, they've kept on refusing to wear hearing protection (except for helicopter pilots and artillery operators). I believe things have changed recently because electronic hearing protection has gotten so much better now, but this is a recent thing.

At the beginning of this reaction your girl Hannah was commenting about all of the little things the US military had at the base in Mogadishu. Much of this infrastructure was a logistical necessity for a modern military for operate in remote areas. Still the creature comforts were necessary to help with moral of the service members. We always have the little creature comforts of home whenever we get deployed. Again to keep moral high. It was usually far and above what the local pop had. The US military is very large with enormous capabilities to ship things around the world. Some large remote bases had things flown in every day. Smaller bases had less but it was still amazing to see. Camp Liberty in Iraq had Pizza Hut, Burger King, Subway, Popeye's Fried Chicken, and Taco Bell. There was also a huge PX (Post Exchange), that had every thing a large department store had.

The Hoo-ah is a motivational term used by the U.S. Army. It's also used as an acknowledgement when replying to an order. That Hendrix bit was hysterical. There are a number of deleted scenes that wrap up what happened to a few characters including Blackburn. After he was discharged from the Army, he became a cop in Florida. Made a full recovery after that fall. What's really crazy is that a number of the helicopter pilots (including the guy (Keith Jones) who ran from the small helicopter to save the Delta Operator were actually part of the real battle. Jones played himself recreating his actual rescue of Dan Busch for this movie. Some of the real Rangers who were extras were there too in 1993.

The units involved are the US 75th Ranger Regiment (Army Rangers), 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta (commonly called Delta Force or CAG), and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR, or The Nightstalkers). Army Rangers are considered a Tier 3 Special Operations Unit. They're elite but kinda "Entry Level" Elite (that's not meant to be a knock either. These are not guys you want to fight if you're a bad guy). You can go straight into it without serving in the regular army first, you just go through a lot more rigorous training. So they're good and have a lot of older, very experiences soldiers but will still be comprised of some younger and less experienced soldiers. They are a larger unit and are meant to act as the tip of a spear for an assault into a country (particularly attacking and taking airfields) or be a rapid reaction force in the event that a major conflict pops off (North Korea invading South Korea or something along those lines). Delta Force is a Tier 1 Unit (Seal Team 6 or "DEVGRU" is the other Tier 1 Unit in the US. SAS is the British counterpart, for some context). They are the best of the best and recruit only the most competent and experienced soldiers from every other branch of the military. They're all very well trained, equipped, and have years of combat experience. They don't act as a large military assault force like the Rangers. They're a smaller group that leads hostage rescue and surgical strike missions like you see in this movie (they wear the black helmets). If you're a high-level bad guy odds are you'll run into Delta or DEVGRU at some point. They're the ones that go "bump" in the night. The Nightstalkers are the Special Operations wing of the Airforce. They recruit the absolute best pilots to fly their helicopters to get the Operators into and out of battle. They're absolute studs.

I deployed into the horn of Africa in Ethiopia (granted close to twenty years later) but America is known for its mobilization/logistics/supply capacity. It is simply unparalleled amongst modern militaries. It isn't that other countries can't supply their forces with what they need, they just can't do it en masse like the USA can. We had electricity when some parts of Dire Dawa didn't, because we brought two HUGE generators over to supply our camp with electricity. When they purchased our camp they bought (and then resold) a complex from a guy who owned the land there. So it had a few hard buildings, but we mostly stayed in clamshell tents that had AC. We also brought a water storage container so we would have water to drink/shower from, as well as an enclosed trailer that were the showers. Internet was very suspect there, we had to rely on satellites (and then in the middle of the night if anybody was up they could use the internet to call home), but we occasionally had it as well. Also, people have the idea in their head that Africa is dirt poor everywhere. And there are some places that are dirt poor with people living in thatched houses, but if you let a place develop and it isn't ransacked by war, it is also a place that can be surprisingly modern. Most likely the US set up camp in a place that was one of those modern places before the civil war. I think it was an airport, but I can't remember off the top of my head.
