The blu ray version of this movie was the first movie I ever bought when blu ray first came out. When I put it on again about a year ago I was surprised how bad it looked. Being my favorite war movie I'm super excited for this 4k version. I was already expecting a nice upgrade but after seeing this review I'm so pumped now!

Shane is exactly right. Surround effects are amazing, best I've heard since Fury. However unlike Fury the subs are not as well utilized. Grenades sound more like a "piff" than a BOOM. And yes there is a film grain if that bothers you. Still worth it for the surround effects.

I have this one, and I felt the same with the subs the first time I saw it, but when I upgraded my AVR to the one that allows me to have tactile transducers, that's a game changer, because I play with them depending on the movie. Still not the best for some subwoofer workout, let's hope Fury does it better, I just ordered it physically on Amazon.

I don't own the standard BluRay...so this 4k version will be on my list. Grain. I think it's a good thing as long as it doesn't affect the detail. Not having grain makes the film too artificial. Just as a CD does to music (vs. vinyl). As for the lack of home crumbling bass...this was an 18 year old film so...maybe not surprising? Though, I suppose they could have mastered some in if they wanted. :) Can't have everything.

How about the “Irene” scene and it’s incredible deep, deep bass? Known as a subwoofer slaughter scene. Check KZbin for subwoofers going nuts during that scene...is it gone in this version?

Another great review Shane. I was really hoping this movie would receive high marks with you. I will definitely replace my Blu-ray. Now next up 13 hours. It already has a great Atmos mix (IMO) and the material is there for a great transfer.

I watched this movie on vudu a few months ago and even with the Dolby upmixer it sounded quite detailed even better then most new blurays..I can imagine how good that atmos sound track sounds..off to the store I go...thanks for the review

Great review, sir. Since this is a Sony 4k release, how does it compare to Sony's "Leon the Professional" 4k UHD? Also, I'm reading from various forums about owners of this UHD getting lockups, freezes and lag when playing the extended version, did you get any of that when playing this UHD via your Oppo 203?

I know this is a shot in the dark here as this video is 4 years old. However im looking for the scene when the gun shots are coming out of the back right surround. I heard it clear as day my first watch, and ever since i haven't heard it again and ive scrubbed through the movie numerous times. Ive changed my setup and im trying to see what i did but j cannot find these scene for the life of me. Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.

The 4k version is way better than the Blu Ray. Although grainy looking, it is still very sharp and detailed. Dolby Atmos is great with wrap around sound stage. Bullets are flying around. Very immersive. However, certain scenes have good deep bass such as helicopter crash. Otherwise not much deep bass going on. Although gun shots are dynamic, I feel that it doesn't have the "oomph" effect. I guess mid-bass is not quite strong. Overall a great 4k disc in my collection.

A little grain is always as good thing IMHO. Preferred even. As long as detail isn't lost. Who wants a totally digital "crispy" film?? Too clinical looking. Artificial.

Saw this on 35mm dts at Mansfield when it was a clear view cinema before it became a cinepolis after it was a bow tie which is undergoing renovations I own the three disc DVD 📀

When i watched this yesterday. The starting scene with the wind blowing only made it clear what a treat i was in. I did a demo as i moved my dolby atmos speakers to the ceiling. Waiting for the 1990's godzilla next. I hope disney sees this is as i would be dissapointed if they fuck up the endgame mix.

Thanks for the review Shane! I own HD BHD and might upgrade. Let me just soapbox a bit.....if you watched BHD and did not read the book ....do yourself a favor and read Mark Bowden's book. It is a freakin' page turner. I finished it in under 2 days because I couldn't put it down. The movie cannot replicate the parallel timelines that are going on in the book ...must read ....must watch.

I just watched this on Netflix last night. I'm curious on the differences between the stream and 4k disc. One thing I found terrible sound-wise, was the tinny sounding rifle shots. No whizzing, no fullness, no bass. Can you comment how they sounded with the 4k disc?

I have the movie on japanese extended blu ray release (from a few years ago) and it has a lot of green artifacting even during some daytime scenes. Did sony fix this with the uhd release? Tried some rips before I buy it but noticed that artifacting is still present.

This is one of my all time favs! Haven’t watched it in a long time and remember the grain and was always disappointed it just had a basic DD 5.1 soundtrack, not even DTS/HD-MA. Looking forward to picking this one up with the new Atmos mix. Great review as usual! 👍

When I first got a blu ray player, I bought BHD, and I couldn't see ANY difference between it or the dvd. I doubt this 4k will be much of an improvement over the bluray. Great film though.

Truth sayer yeh I find that to be true too in some cases but will invest if “Shane says” there’s a decent Atmos soundtrack, Atmos changes the whole dynamics and viewing pleasure of any film... Looking forward to picking this one up.
