The German people were really in love to this lady with the big eyes and the trementous voice in the 60s. In this time she and her former husband were famous with their songs round the globe.

@Ofarim - "Round the Globe" indeed. I know of six languages they sang in, and Eyatn might find some more hidden treasures.

Thanks for the information. But the song is taken from a original scottish ballad. John Jacob Niles was not only a composer he was also a collector of old songs. See wikepedia: Black is the colour...

I like the Smothers Brothers version: "Black is the color of my love's true hair." :-P

Ofarim, What a beautiful, beautiful voice...and song. Thank you so much. It will be one of the next songs I plan to arrange for classical guitar. Also, is that John Lennon sitting on the couch smoking a cigarette at about 1:50?

This is a beautiful version - I love the arrangement and the variation on the melody. Is a recording available anywhere?

Just saw this in an episode of "Derrick" (Koldaus letzte Reise).

@guitarslim56: I guess if you consider a camcorder microphone recording the song from TV speakers with dialogue over it a "recording", then yes, you're right.

@bookkeeper57 Scottish? Here I was thinking that the song was influenced by a trip to a cave between the Jordon and Egypt? Thus, the Egyptian influence...right?

@DonegalRaymie201: Yes sorry, Karan Casey is Irish. She sings a lot of Scottish songs, though. A wonderful singer.
@unturnthisstone13 жыл бұрын
@AFRICA4AFRICANS: This is a Scottish folk song, so in theory the most authentic version would be by a Scottish singer - Karan Casey does a lovely version, for example. But Esther Ofarim's version is rather nice. She's Israeli. Very beautiful.

The earliest versions are all actually American. John Jacob Niles and other early 20thC versions from Appalachia. It could be based on an older Scottish song but there is zero evidence for that and no record of it exists in Scotland before the folk revival of the mid 20thC. Some people presume it has to be Scottish because of the verse that mentions "the Clyde" but of course not all the versions mention the Clyde and just because a Scottish river is named in some versions it doesn't mean the song is actually definitely Scottish. The Proclaimer's first hit song mentions both Miama and Canada but it doesn't mean it is a North American song!! Likewise there was a significant proportion of the Appalachian population who were of Scottish extraction so it is possible it was an American song of the Scottish diaspora there or even a song not of the Scottish disapora where someone of the disapora inserted the Clyde reference during the normal folk process where various versions of songs come into being. In truth we don't know for sure - but there is no record of it in Scotland that goes anywhere near as far back as the Niles version.

Her Interpretation is for sure in Esther’s own and unique style and as always far beyond just pulling her own feelings or a temporary mood on this, a song… it’s widely beyond this, it’s pure art that allows You to feel what You feel and not what she might feel at a certain moment. She is a servant of the universe. Her voice, music, incredible beauty and expression and talent is of an extraterrestrial eternity, which doesn’t and shall not diminish any other singer’s or Simone’s unbelievable talent, which has to fulfill another purpose, the purpose of her unlimited and personal experience and pain., she shares with so many she is the voice for. Thank you
