14:12 It's definitely a double-edged sword. I used to be able to go out for Japanese, Taiwanese, Filipino, Thai roles, etc. But now I would never get considered or sent out for those since casting breakdowns are very specific. I've potentially lost several opportunities because of it. I think we've increased access to a larger pool of talent (good) while simultaneously thinned the quantity of roles available at the individual level (not so good).

What makes productions like The Woman King and Black Panther nice is that they specifically hire people of colour for costuming, writing production, animation etc. It would be nice if people want to honor a culture either by portraying a character that is not the same [insert label] as the actor or creating a movie centering around a certain country and it's people, its nice when at least those people are hired for jobs related to that production. As an artist hearing stories of black getting their dream job working on lets say Soul or Princess and the Frog is just as important as the film as well.

What i don't get is why, if they are choosing to diversify these disney movies, why didnt they change the race for the other princess films?? Like from all the other live-action films that they sorta followed the storyline they kept the races the same as the story, well then whats the point of making Princess Tiana then??

It’s the fact that grown ass adults are pressed about a movie that isn’t even supposed to be for them, we have our original movie the one we watched as kids and it was great, this new one isn’t for US it’s for the new generation of kids growing up, being able to see something that’s more inclusive, I haven’t seen one kid react to the trailer and hate that she was black, they love it, and that’s all that matters to me at least

@berserk____18782 жыл бұрын
It's understandable that throughout hollywood white main characters are prevalent and people are unnecessarily mad about black Ariel, Halle Bailey is gonna kill it for sure. Diversity/inclusivity matters. However, people always talk about respecting cultures and the little mermaid is European culture/dutch fairy tale and Ariel is white. Context matters. If an Indian man turns up in Winterfell, I'm gonna question that shxt. If you start changing things that people are used to like white redhead Ariel, of course, people are gonna be mad. There's a reason stories like Black Panther, Encanto and Turning Red are popular with no controversy...

For those people saying kids don't see race. Please 1st be open to the possibility that not everyone grew up like you did. 2nd read/and look up different studies/ experiments showing kids as young as four y.o. can identify different races/ethnicities, AND the prejudices associated with them.
@bellaangel44222 жыл бұрын
Race is a learned American taxonomy. A young child knows about race, as you stated, due to their parents shoving it down their throat. The taxonomy still exists because people continue to feed the fire. Prejudices are also learned in your home environment. Your thoughts and beliefs are not everyone else’s. Side Note: Mermaids are Scandinavian Folklore and the person playing the live action should be of Scandinavian Descent. 💗 This was culturally insensitive for Disney to cast the wrong Actors for this particular folklore.

No Chaser crew, what most people fail to understand is Little Mermaid is based on a European fairytale, so if you want diversity why don’t you use more diverse stories. Disney doesn’t care about diversity of actual stories or telling the history of other cultures because they don’t see it as profitable. Instead they chose to reboot a tried and true IP and milk it. This is the same level of virtue signaling as gender swapped movies, with terribly renovated plots.

You said it better than I could have. I just feel like it’s piggybacking off an established character instead of creating a new character and getting praise for its own merits. It just seems so forced.

So instead of making new stories with new characters we're supposed to be happy/accepting leftovers? My understanding of equal representation means instead of simply throwing in a black pilot in say, a Star Wars movie, we get a brand new space adventure with black crew members. It's not enough to put a black person in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon or The Enterprise. Give us a brand new ship. This isn't equality/justice. This is exploiting an underpresented market purely for profit.
@sepulfan022 жыл бұрын
I do understand a little bit with people being put off by the change the character has had a consistent look for over 30 years but also it dumb to be angry. Truthfully if you're a millennial guy you were likely called a girl or a slur if you liked the movie

Its not color for me. Its just a change of a character that has been the same ever since it was created and just randomly changed out of nowhere. Triss from The Witcher for an example. Also Celebrimbor from Rings of Power(comparing it to the shadow of war game). I will of course watch and support my favorite characters. Ik Halle Bailey will crush it and wish her the best.

Yeah it's stupid, I think most people who are mad about this are just upset that they changed her character as a means to be woke. But they're missing the point that they intentionally wanted to diversify roles. Unironically this is definitely a change for nonsense woke culture but this is what the company wants so why are they mad?
@bellaangel44222 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, it was culturally insensitive and prejudice for Disney to cast the wrong actress for the role. Disney needed to create an African Folklore Movie for African Decent Actors for this to be right.
