If you know the "Journey to the West", Monkey King's story within it and Chinese mythology universe, this game goes to the next level of pleasure and excitement : ) Some basic things about Wu Kong (i.e. Sun Wukong, aka Monkey King) to help you understand some of the actions and things you see in the clip: - Wu Kong was 'born' from The rock. (And the rock has background story where it comes from in the Chinese mythology universe) - Wu Kong went to learn how to be immortal for his fellow monkeys (eventually only learnt Kung Fu and skills/magic) from a 'god'. He can change into 72 forms of things/animals and can ride 'Jin Dou Cloud' (i.e. fly) - He has learnt from his master (the god I mentioned above) that he can turn his hair/fur into clones of himself to fight the enemies; - After he learnt his skills, he went back to his 'home town' and stayed with his fellow monkeys (they are normal monkeys). - He could not find a suitable weapon for a while. Later he got (snatched) his weapon 'Ru Yi JIn Gu Bang' (the staff) from one of the Dragon King's palace (his friends told him that dragon king has got a large collection of weapons). The staff can become bigger than skyscraper (or infinity big) or as small as a needle. To carry it easily, Wu Kong keep it in his ear. This is why you see he take it out and put it into the 'side of his head'. (This staff is not just a staff it has background story where it comes from) - He also removed his own name from the 'Life and Death Registry Book' when he was taken to the underworld according to the fate recorded in this book. - He has a famous battle with gods and their armies (because what his has done and the heaven failed to 'convert' him, they didn't treat him fair enough) and almost defeat all of them until Buddha take him down. - After he was trapped under a mountain for 500 years (he becomes almost immortal be cause he has eaten several magical/heavenly food and medicines during the battle with heaven), he was released to protect the monk Tang San Zang to go to the West (India) to get/learn the Buddhist scrolls back to ancient China. During this journey, He and his master San Zang has to overcome 81 challenges before they successfully return the ancient capital of China. - Because the monsters on the route heard the rumour that anyone who has eaten Wu Kong's master Tang San Zang will be become immortal, so every monster tried to capture Tang San Zang when he pass their territory. And Wu Kong and two other followers of Tang San Zang have to defeat all the monsters during the journey. - After they meet the Buddha and get the scrolls, Wu Kong was promoted to one of the buddha. (The old monk in the clip should be in this form) ...... Vast and complicated mythology universe behind this.

there's a whole history on that staff alone. It's a staff that used to be a pillar of the sea dragon's god, which Wu Song later 'claimed' it for himself. It has the ability to change to any size, and he usually keeps it in his ear. I see a lot of reaction videos tend to question where the heck did he put that flame sword he got from the mini boss. Toni has been enjoying learning the backstory and actually tracked down a translated copy of Journey to the West so she can read the original before this game comes out. :-) Based on what we're hearing 2-3 years of additional production time sounds like it'd be well within the ballpark. Much better than the 8 we are braced for, based on what happened with Cyberpunk lol.

Fun fact: Son Goku ( Dragon Ball series ) was inspired by Sun Wukong The Monkey King mythology. Also in the scene where you see a Dragon in the foreground, Wukong is riding on a cloud just like Goku does in the earlier DB series (Nimbus).

I'm pretty much know about Journey to the West and Sun Wukong. So here's what I know in case if anyone's wondering: Sun Wukong was born from the magic stone that resides Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. After his birth, he became the Monkey King. He possessed 72 transformations, which allows him to shapeshift into almost any form, including morph himself into human. Each of his hairs have transformative powers, and he can magically manipulate wind, water and fire as well. His hair is also capable of summoning clones of the Monkey King himself. Wukong also search his suitable weapon until he acquired the Golden-banded staff, the stabilizer of the Four Seas and a treasure of Ao Guang, the dragon-king of the Eastern Seas. The Monkey King is the only creature strong enough to wield the staff-like weapon and there is an instant affinity between them. The Golden-banded staff can change its size, elongate, fly and attack opponents according to its master's will. It weighs 13,500 jīn or 7960 kg. When not wielding the weapon, the Monkey King shrinks it down to the size of a sewing needle and stores it in his ear. At first the Jade Emperor of the heaven was not interested in him, but he later invited him to the heaven where Wukong became 'Protector of the Horses', or stableman, which is the lowest ranking job in heaven. When Wukong discovered his low rank status, he was not happy and rebelled against the heaven, where he cause havoc in heaven such as trashing around until the Buddha came who imprisoned Wukong under a mountain. 500 years later, a Buddhist monk, Tang Sanzang, or Tang Seng, released Wukong who became his disciple. @@ScaryCatGaming I would love to say yes but actually no. I grew up reading Joureny to the West and watching the cartoon. It really is one of the weird things he likes doing. Also, if you read the novel you ll know that's not just any stick. It's an extremely powerful ancient relic once belonging to the dragons. maybe somehow connected to the dragon we saw in the trailer.

to some who don't know, Son WuKong is a character from a Chinese myth novel 400 years ago called Journey to the West. In the myth, some of his powers include riding clouds, transforming (72 forms), that magical staff he wields can lengthen and shorten, he also hides it in his ears when it's tiny. When he tears off strands of his hair, each strand can turn into a clone of himself. Oh, and let's not forget he can freeze people with words. that's all i remember for the moment. but he's pretty dope!! lots of animes are inspired by him and his story Journey to the West. Like Goku from Dragonball is pretty much WuKong (Goku is WuKong in Japanese), Naruto's shadow clones, the nine-tailed fox, Sandaime's transformation... are all inspired by WuKong.

Chinese mythology is a very complex system. I can explain the basic concept of the chinese mythology. First the structure of chinese pantheon. Chinese traditional mythology is called Daoism. But after Buddhism come to China, it got absorbed by Chinese pantheon. The supreme god king governing heaven in daoism is jade emperor. But the one who created the universe was the ancient titan pangu. Pangu died from exhaustion soon after he creates the universe. The jade emperor and three pure one control most of the universe after him. They assigned king Yama to govern the underworld. Four great dragon kings to govern the sea. But they all pledge loyalty to jade emperor. Great goddess Nuwa creates humanity after the creation of the world. Buddha is technically the most powerful entity after the death of pangu. Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and daoism god show respect to each other, and often work together. Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. The biggest difference between Chinese mythology and western mythology. Is the fact that in Chinese mythology, mortal can become god by practicing daoism or Buddhism. Which many western mythology can’t. This gives people more hope and give them reason to study daoism and Buddhism. However this freedom also give birth to demon(youkai). In chinese the concept of demon is not the same as west. Chinese demon were once mortal creatures who practiced daoism or Buddhism. They use the power in evil way and became corrupted. Also most demon aim to become god, because in chinese mythology gods are the final stage of evolution. Now we can talk about monkey king wukong and journey of the west. Monkey king is the hero in chinese mythology. He’s just like Thor in Norse mythology or Hercules in Greek. Monkey king was loved by chinese people. But monkey king wasn’t a righteous figure when he first appeared. Monkey king was a stone monkey who came from the magical stone of goddess nuwa. He was a trickster and a morally neutral existence. He soon became the king of monkeys and learn daoism under a great daoist saint. During the process he learn immortality and become so powerful that almost no god can beat him. After he gain such strength, he went to the dragon king palace and acquired weapons and armor. Went to underworld and delete his name from book of death. He soon make alliance with demon kings in the mortal realm. Making him one of the greatest demon king in existence. When jade emperor discovered this, he give wukong a job in heaven. Which wukong gladly accept. But jade emperor still didn’t quite understand how strong wukong is. So he give him a position as stable boy for taming heavenly horses. Wukong feels extremely humiliated. So he quit the job and give him self the title of great sage equal to heaven in revenge. Heaven sees wukong’s refusal of the job as an insult. But after long discussion, they give wukong the title of great sage equal to heaven and invite him once more to live in heaven. As guardian of immortal peach garden. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xiang Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.

This was made by indie studio in China, some of them work in this project are from ex-Tencent developers that has over 10 years of experience in the industry. Hopefully this game get well received enough and hope that Sony or Microsoft will sign them up and give them the resource to finish the game. China games are not that good in general and had a bad reputation with lack of innovation and passion, maybe if this indie studio manage to pulled it off, the world might change their aspect on the chinese game developers just like what the western studio Sucker Punch did with Ghost of Tsushima

Don't get too excited, this was never meant to be seen outside of China. It was a recruitment video looking for employees and investors, not an announcement, that's why it didn't have english subtitles. In actuality, it may never release outside of China. The company has already said they were flattered, but it looks like crap to them. They spent a lot of time explaining what was wrong with it like water physics and stuff.

@@ScaryCatGaming One of his main abilities was to transform into 72 forms, which shows the game how he transform into a golden cicada, the beast form or even the flame blade sage. The way he stores his main weapon is to shrink it into a size of a needle and puts onto his ear. He has the ability to freeze his opponents with just one word. His hair was pretty much magic, if he pull a single small hair, he'll summon his clones to fight etc. etc. You'll know about Sun Wukong if you know the Journey to the West novel. :D

Years ago when I was a young man, we used to watch a chinese series called, Monkey. It was based on a chinese or buddist legend were the gods were portrayed as animals, some good and some bad, that came down to earth to further their own aims. Monkey was a good, if sometimes a misguided and mischievous god, who always found trouble, always fighting other gods and humans. I also recall a pig god playing prominent role. It was done with real actors and I guess I must have liked it at the time because I watched a lot of episodes. Will I play the game? Probably not, I'm not into sword and sorcery unless it's a book or film.

But after long discussion, they give wukong the title of great sage equal to heaven and invite him once more to live in heaven. As guardian of immortal peach garden. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.
