(Disclaimer this is an affiliate link so I do get a commission) The black neon tetra, these fish have a tannish grey metallic body with a large black strip going down their center and even have a slight orange tint to them on their dorsal area. They are probably one of the hardiest of the tetras that I’ve experience. They are also an extremely easy fish to care for and do not require crazy maintenance to ensure their survival, but because they do not have the same vibrate colors of the regular neon tetra they are often over looked. The black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a nano fish that comes from the tropical freshwater of southern Brazil and Paraguay.

I agree , very underrated. They are my favorite schooling fish. They love to group school with other fish that have a single stripe like lamp Eyed tetra. Great way to get a diverse school of nanos

I just lost all 6 black neon tetras bought last week. Thank goodness they were in a quarantine tank! Got them with 3 embers (all they had) which are all fine. I'm so bummed, they were so pretty! Will try again once the embers are out of quarantine...

Black tetras are very nice. Bored so feeding algorithm. Lovely tank BTW! After this power outage I may totally get away from Tropicals. Time will tell. My son got a small generator hooked up but it only powers a few things. I just checked the 90G. It's is 51 degrees. What I can see are still alive. I have been switching to Coldwater fish and may just go the whole way. I bundled my two parrots up and put them in dog crates in a slightly warmer part of the house. The Quaker will be fine not sure about the African Grey. So far he is holding up and rather angry.

haha thanks for feeding the youtube machine :P Aslong as the temp drop is slow hopefully your fish will be ok and will just kinda go to sleep! I am trying to think of ways to slowly heat the water back up but am at a loss :( im still stuck at blankets to try and trap what ever heat remains! @Lefty3213a thank you for your support. Power back on after 48 hours. One tank - the one with the Angels- only had 24 hours without power as we were able to get one circuit on a small generator. The 90 was not on the little generator and was down to 51 degrees. All tetras definately dead. The only male Bosmani Rainbow also dead. I am pretty sure I am losing the plecos and a cory.. I cannot find the Panda Gara. Time will tell. Heaters on but tank only 58. Most of the Rainbows did make it to this point. It is only 58 now. I think you and I were among the first to buy Bettas from KG. I may be losing Samauri #3. I did take him out of his cold tank and put him in a container and float in the Angel tank. He rallied a little. Things could be worse.

At 3:03 to 3:57 your footage switched to show Penguin Tetras rather than black neons. The penguins have the black continuing to the bottom of the tailfin with a hockey-stick style effect.

Haven’t seen the video yet but I already agree with the title Black neons don’t get the respect they deserve! They’re no where near as popular as neon or cardinal tetras, likely because they aren’t as colorful, but they’re much hardier from what I hear and still look amazing in a shoal, especially when paired with more colorful tank mates

You shouldn't have any issues from the tetras :) they are super awesome night tight schooling and should give the betta something fun to play with

can you mix all different kinds of neon tetras all together? Like black neons, green, true neon, diamond head, albino, cardinal (red neon), gold and long fin neon tetras? say a school of 10 of each sub specie on a 110 gal pond or aquarium?

I mean there shouldn't be an ammonia spike if it's a cycle tank unless someone else died off or you massively over fed. It's possible they just were old or something else occurred with in the tank. Def check it when you get the kit. Especially if the water doesn't look weird or smell off.

@@Lefty3213a got it. maybe I overfed them with frozen foods brine shrimp, worms. water is crystal clear. it was cycled less than a week when i first set it up. Also there were some fish got ich but cured them with Ich-X. No fish showing sings of ich anymore. Ill keep an eye. thanks!

5 is honestly too small for these. A 10 is as small as I would go for 99% of fish keepers. Unless you are an expert nano fish keeper and you are 100% on top of water cha he's and your fish. 10 gal is the safest size for a minimum

I agree that 5 gallons would be too small, but I’d say 20 gallons would be the ideal minimum Even small fish like these need plenty of space to move around, and while experts can successfully keep them in smaller tanks, it still won’t be an ideal environment for them
