The great Charles Brown. I caught him in Seattle at Jazz Alley years ago. Table next to Charles to watch to watch his hands. What a voice and pianist. Deep blues boys, oh Yeah!

The awesome thing about the blues is its "timelessness"...this song was originally recorded in 1950 or 1951 - just listened to it today on a blues compilation CD from local library. 70+ years later. Still. Awesome.

Charles wasn't just a great artist. He was sweetie pie of a person. Anyone that ever had the chance to spend any time with him at all can attest to that. As for Danny Caron? Class act all the way.

The original guitarist on Black Night (ca 1951) was Jessie Ervin, who also plays on Fool's Paradise and others from that period. He toured with Charles as well and was married to his "niece", Joyce, for whom Charles' "Joyce's Boogie" is named.

I got to be a good friend of Charles when his career was dead in the water. Before Alligator Records picked up ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD recorded under Blue Side Records that folded soon after and did not promote or distribute it. And before Bonnie Raitt took Charles on tour after she won the Grammy Awards. I had to create bookings to see Charles perform other than just at his apartment in Oakland. I got the original Chris Cain Band, (Liz, Robert, Noel, Ron, and Chris) to back him at the much nicer JJ's in Mountain View. This lists the WRITERS of this song as Jon Lord, Ian Paice, etc., members of DEEP PURPLE. They did NOT write this song.. I saw the original 45 at Charles apartment and it had a Jessie May Robinson listed under the title. As I recall the B-side was also written by her. When I met Charles, I had NO idea who he was, but when I first heard his play and sing, I wanted to know more about this man, which led to many visits to his apartment. Charles was LIVING the BLUES that he had sung about all those years before. Between Brue at Alligator and the timing of that tour with Bonnie, Charles again felt the love that he had deserved for all those lost years.
