Phil, love your comments about Black Sabbath and captures very much how I feel about the Ozzy period. My order of preference is Vol 4 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Master of Reality Sabotage Black Sabbath Paranoid Technical Ecstasy Never say Die. The first 6 albums are outstanding and hard to separate each album has strong appeal for me and was and still are very important to me. I spent a lot of time with my headphones on listening to BS in the '70s and still listen regularly today.A great band.

Hi again Phil, I’ve just improved my box set (if that’s possible) Removed all the shrink, And put all the records in spincare clear resealable sleeves, including the poster and the back info sheet, and transferred the hype sticker on to said sleeve, now I can see what number box of the 3000 I have received, the only criticism I do have the spindle holes seem to be a bit small so need a bit of coaxing to get them on and off the turn table.

Hi Phil - thoroughly enjoyable review. My top 3 1. - Black Sabbath, 2. - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath & 3. - Vol 4. I am not a Sabbath completest I'm afraid, but I have a few of their albums. I do remember back in the day I was in a record shop in Stockport, I heard "Black Sabbath" over the shops sound system and those tolling church bells and then the riff -unforgettable. So their first album will always be No1 for me, that will never change !!. Cya Doug

Great review as always Phil. Had all these albums for over 40 years and love them all. Picking favourites is very difficult, as hard as it must be for a parent to rank their children in the the same way! Dependent upon mood etc. mine vary from year to year. But if I had to decide, my first 4 would be the same as yours (although the order within that 4 vary over time). The remaining ones (at the moment) top to bottom are: Never Say Die!; Master Of Reality; Paranoid & Black Sabbath.

Thank you Phil for this podcast and enjoyment you have been giving us...There are quite few music podcasts that i follow and yours is one of my favorites. The vast knowledge/experience on popular music including your patients, humility as well as it seems caring disposition shinning through. As I know that you listen all types of music it would be interesting if you can rank albums from some punk/new wave bands, for example the Damned, Ramones, XTC etc. or pub rock Dr Feelgood, ...or not sure whether you are into Black Metal (that becoming increasingly one of my favorite metal genre) to rank for example best of all time albums of Black Metal... Of course as an idea for future developments of the podcast. Keep carry on with the splendid podcast Phil...

I think you’ve managed to make this a sell out set … As for your album ranking .. well I actually really like Never Say Die … it’s probably the one I grab first if I just want a bit of Sabbath in the background… its a rock /pop/ jazz fusion that really works for me .. I liked it from the play …I have the rsd release as well and it’s a great package.. hope you do do a more in-depth review.. Enjoy your new box .. that’s something I would play more then I would care to admit …just watching those pictures spin ..🤪

That is the best thing I have ever seen haha. I can’t afford it so I will look at it on your excellent channel. To me the band existed on album until 1983 and after that is iommi and guests. My ranking 8.never say die, technical ecstasy, black sabbath, vol 4, sabotage, sabbath bloody sabbath, master of reality,1. paranoid. That was tough to put the order for the top 5 as I consider those ones all great albums. Warning and evil woman drops the debut slightly but the rest of it is great. Thought technical and never were not as good.

Hi Phil, back again to give you my angle on all things Sabbath. I loved your video and I can feel the passion you've got for Sabbath just as I have. If I had the money and I suppose I have, having to fork out whatever the cost is when I already own the original albums for all but Paranoid and Master Of Reality is something that I might feel slightly guilty about. Don't get me wrong I am inane about Sabbath, and like yourself I have all their Ozzy era albums and the first two Dio ones on vinyl, CD and some in their remastered and boxed versions. I just feel that I could be overdoing it with this purchase but looking at it, it does look very appealing. I would like to share with you my history with Sabbath. I assume I come from the same part of the country as you. I believe you are from Birmingham. Our Back Country cousins used to refer to us as the posh gits from Royal Leamington Spa but I like to think that we were just a little bit more refined than our bostin' but slightly neanderthal relatives from Brum. I hope you take that with the intended humour that we have displayed with our cousins for the most part of coming on fifty years. Just to let you know, my background is that I was born in Leam back in 1962 on the cusp of the Cuban Crisis and having survived that I suppose I should be able to take on anything life throws at me. My folks emigrated to the UK in the mid 50s, when Elvis was king, from the northern state of Punjab in India and lived out the entirety of their lives here with mom still doing so. So being of Indian Sikh heritage there weren't any from my cultural background who were engaged in this fraternisation with rock which in time have led onto metal, progressive rock, psychedelia and of lately Italian Prog and foremost my obsessiveness with Porcupine Tree and all Steven Wilson associated projects for the last twenty or so years. Anyway, how was I introduced to Sabbath? At the time I was vaguely familiar with the song Paranoid but hadn't really dug into their catalogue to know what they were all about. I had just started what was called the third years in secondary school and I had at the time already turned 14 and was already getting familiar with all sorts of rock acts from the 70s and even some from the 60s. I had got into the early Roxy Music and Hendrix through my older brother and had been introduced to the mighty Deep Purple in Rock and was still recuperating from that initiation. So, I believe it to be early March of 1977 when one of my classmates turned up with three Sabbath albums (Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Technical Ecstasy) in their original release form and in immaculate condition alongside a taped cassette of their debut. Knowing that I was a certain rock aficionado he handed them over to me for free to keep. Feeling as if I needed to pay him back for this seemingly charitable gesture I lent him my copy of UFO's Phenomenon for him to relish the magic of Schenker. Tim, as I recall was not allowed to play nor keep the albums in his household as his parents were strict devout Christians from what denomination I'm not too certain. Its sad that people at the time made such blatant decisions on what they presumed was contained on the vinyl of said artists without investigating for themselves what all the hullabaloo was about. It was Tim's loss and my gain and as I recall when I first heard their first song from their debut album, I had instantaneously sold my soul to Sabbath. Having heard you waxing about Sabotage, I almost had a similar initiation but I had to wait until dad had gone to work before we could convert our living room into the mock stage at Reading festival. I still remember that bit at the beginning of the album where you can hear the engineer faffing around with something and you can hear the anticipated sound about to erupt from the speakers. Ours were Wharfdale at the time. But all those epic tracks from Sabotage are now fixed into my memory until the end of time. That raging metal intro to 'Symptoms' guitar and bass could be heard travelling the length of the living room floor with Bill awakening the neighbours at the bottom of our road with his furious flurries on his skins. My poor mom at least had the comfort of escaping to what we used to call the dining room for shelter from the fallout. These were old sturdy houses built before the war I believe and our hard of hearing neighbours rarely made any mention of any noise pollution. Between ourselves and our Leamington cousins two doors down we held most of our side of the road ransom to the Friday Night Show being aired as the All Week Night Show with Rock, Metal Punk, Reggae, Ska and a whole host commercial pop flaunted as a matter of fact. Kids hey! Its great seeing fellow fans airing their passion and it's amazing how these shared moments are so similar to us all from those golden times of youth and early adulthood. One of the main reason for putting pen to paper was also to share the fact that a few years back I had decided to put pen to paper in a real sense and write a book about my musical journey. I've actually written one about my Sabbath experience entwined with choice historical anecdotes of world events at the time and a few personal stories chucked into the mix. I made the arduous task of writing about one and every track from the Ozzy era, the first two Dio outputs and the first three solo Ozzy projects up to guitarist Jake E. Lee as well. Unfortunately I have not had the confidence to publish it even after having it proof read by a close colleague of mine who said it made good reading from a fan's perspective. It does also contain a few personal stories of people whose names I would have to change for anonymity. I intend to write 5 in all, time willing under the moniker of 'Thank You For The Music' and this book which I've written is called 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath', what else? To date I have started work on books 1 and 3, with book 3 near completion chronologizing my other favoured musos. It keeps me out of trouble now having just hit 61 and having retired from a lengthy career in teaching in Birmingham. Keep up the good work Phil and I hope you found my ramblings interesting.

For this box set, it seems like they missed an opportunity to include a nice coffee table style book that collects all the Super Deluxe books together in one place; as you've said on your Jethro Tull series, people would be willing to buy those in-depth books as a stand-alone purchase; I guess since there's no Never Say Die or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath deluxe editions (yet?) they didn't consider it.

Magic box set. Awesome review. Bought the US version because it was avtually made for North America and in 4000 copies. It is still only released in 4000 copies in the US. But i guess pressure from the band or the fans there is the Europe version in 3000 copies. So it is now in a total of 7000 copies. The cool would have been in 6666 copies. Keep up the good work.

For me, right now, of the original Ozzy era: 1. Sabotage 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Master of Reality 4. Snowblind/Vol. 4 5. Technical Ecstasy 6. Paranoid 7. Never Say Die 8. Black Sabbath Yes, I’m at a stage where I know the first album shouldn’t be last, but that early dirge jam of “The Warning” drags it out at the end. I love jams and extended instrumentals (Dead, Krimson, Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Opeth, Miles Davis, etc.) but it just falls flat the longer it goes for me.

Despite ranking the album last, I'm glad you mentioned some positive notes about Never Say Die (proggy; courageous); there's plenty there to sink your teeth into both in terms of classic riffs & fresh (if ill-advised) ideas; for me its on par with Technical Ecstasy though doesn't contain a bonafide classic like Dirty Women; I guess the keyboards/piano are a bit polarizing and a couple of tracks are unrefined; a lot of reviews scoff at Breakout & its horns, but I think it works fine if you consider it as no more than an "intro" to Swinging the Chain (maybe they should put the two tracks together like they did with earlier albums); if the lyrics of You Won't Change Me & War Pigs resonate with you, I think those of Over To You might do the same.

A lovely collection. But, having all the albums already ( except Never Say Die - which is awful, in my view ) and the super deluxe editions, do I really want, nay, afford to ( over £200!! ) buy them all again? For me it's a reluctant, no. If money was no object, I might consider it. But it's vinyl which is not for me - as it is always more expensive. And so cumbersome to store. It's only one advantage is the audio quality. I really like the group, but blind devotion, which it is to me, doesn't negate the outlay of money for a pensioner, like me. Good stuff as usual Phil.

I met the missus back in 1991 over a rock jukebox in a rock pub, she's always been a "rock chick". I got to about the age of 30 telling everyone that Ozzy Sabbath was rubbish compared to Dio Sabbath - I think I'd only ever listened to Paranoid and Iron Man by Ozzy Sabbath - oh, I think I had the Never Say Die single somewhere also, I quite liked that. One day, soon after we met, I was winding her up about the very same thing of Dio being better than Ozzy (she'd always disagreed with me on the topic) and she sat me down telling me I needed to listed to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - at which point she got the vinyl LP out and stuck it on the turntable. I must admit that I sat there quite enjoying the first three tracks - then Sabbra Cadabra came on and I ended up just looking at her agog and completely speechless - what a fecking amazing piece of music that is, I actually had shivers down my spine (and still do) when the piano bit comes in towards the end. So, yes, I was a late comer to Ozzy Sabbath but Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is my favourite - but I like all the others too, even Never Say Die. It's a nice box set, by the way. Picture discs aren't my thing but it's lovely set for the true Sabbath collector. Thanks for the review.

My ranking: I never owned "Never Say Die" and don't really know it. So it's not in my list. 7. Technical Ecstasy: I know it the least. I only got it when the Super Deluxe Box came out a year ago. Right now I'd say that it won't turn over any of the others. We'll see. 6. Vol. 4: It's fine. Never warmed up to much to it for some reason. If TE gets bumped up in the future it's because I'm a bit lukewarm on this one. 5. Black Sabbath: Very cool, iconic and important. But it was "just" a start. 4. Paranoid: My first Ozzy-Sabbath-Album. Listened to it a ton. Back in the day it would've been on Number 1 but the next 3 just toppled it. 3. Master of Reality: Instantly became my favorite when I orginally bought it. But then I bought ... 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath: and .. 1. Sabotage: Those might switch places at any given day. I totally agree that they are a bit proggy. "Sabotage" might be the one that's a bit less accessible, I guess. But that's part of it's appeal for me and why it's in the Top most times.

We can all argue the toss about ranking their albums but we’re probably all agreed on which finishes last! I would say, however, that I always felt that “ SBS” sounded a lot less loud / powerful than all of its predecessor’s, maybe due to the complex sound arrangements or mixing . Actually, if you play Vol4 then SNS then Sabotage in sequence at identical volume settings, you’ll see what I mean. Hopefully.

I was shocked to hear you say the pic disc of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath sounds better than the original LP. Pic discs are notoriously horrible sounding but I was tempted to buy this after your review. Do the pic discs have a sort of swoosh sound between tracks like on all pic discs?

After further investigation, the U.S./Canadian release of this set is from Rhino/Warner, while the European release is on BMG. The European release has the hype while the North American release doesn’t. As I prefer BMG over Rhino, I paid extra for overseas shipping to the US and purchased the version you showcased. I’m really looking forward to its arrival!🤘
