Anyone know the time signature of the classic opening riff? Bill Ward almost went insane trying to learn it and became very frustrated. He was a good sport and stayed with it. It may not even be in a specific time sig. It may just be a riff and it is what it is. Tony was the Riff Lord. Great stuff. This was also the first album where they went to tuning to C#, three semi-tones down from standard. Great, great tone!

4/4. The guitar comes in on beat 4 before the riff starts.
@plasticoflamingo2952 Жыл бұрын
yeah, 4/4, a bit syncopated. there's some shuffle in there, too. I think they multi-tracked the drums, as on a lot of their early stuff, so it's hard to tell what's going on without isolating the tracks. Don't take that to heart, though. I'm just a lowly rhythm guitar player.
@al1976-v7m2 ай бұрын
@@plasticoflamingo2952 exactly. that whole song is some ingenious riffing. I love that the tempo in each section is different.

What I especially love about these remastered and, rejigged mixes is, as a bass player who has listened to this album thousands of times since around 1975 or, thereabouts (aged 10) and, ALWAYS rating Geezer's playing, songwriting and, arrangements as top shelf...even when I was playing with punk bands or, later, a Blue Cheer/Sabbath heavy post-punk "country" band...he was so creative and, when Bill's jazzy flashes came out to the forefront Geezer locked in with Bill and brought a tremendous swinging groove to the relentless, pummeling, ominous, dark, eerie and, catchy as fuck (pretty much genius) riffs that Tony brought to the table. That swing was VITAL. These guys were creating a new kind of music. The jazzy and, tremendously groovin bits were the components of their unique sound that separated them from most of the bands that emerged WITH them and, was even more lacking in the bands that followed them and, who were heavily influenced by Sabbath. A few of the bands that were playing soul/R and B/instrumental music in the early/mid 60s and evolved into heavier sounds/bands that evolved from similar places (musical and geographical) like The May Blitz, Captain Beyond, even Deep Purple...had crazy great drummers and, were skilled players with a wide array of abilities. Bands like Bang were very good at the heavier riffs and, basic rythm and blues stylings but... That huge meandering spiel aside...what is especially awesome here is that you can hear Geezer's incredible basslines so much more up front in the mix and, he's giving his bass guitar a bloody good working over...in this mix it sounds like pure evil...throttled and choking and, as if it is being ruthlessly brutalized...to within an inch of it's life. The only other album/player that comes close in ability, creativity, groove, ruthless attack and, that sounds as knuckle whipped as Geezer in this song/album and mix is the amazing Ron Asheton on Raw Power. For decades we've heaped praise (completely deserved) on James Williamson's extraordinary guitar playing on Raw Power...you should hear Ron's freakishly epic bass playing and, the pulverizing mess of sound put down. And, Scotty's drumming is like Bill's but substituting Chicago blues and Detroit soul for the jazz

For real though! His tone and that tuning sounded NASTY on this album. Nothing beats the original key, but I've recently acquired a 7 string guitar which it's tuned to Drop A, really showcases how devastating these riffs must've been in 1971🤘🤘

Rocket engines burning fuel so fast Up into the night sky they blast Through the universe the engines whine Could it be the end of man and time? Back on earth the flame of life burns low Everywhere is misery and woe Pollution kills the air, the land and sea Man prepares to meet his destiny, yeah Rocket engines burning fuel so fast Up into the black sky so vast Burning metal through the atmosphere Earth remains in worry, hate and fear With the hateful battles raging on Rockets flying to the glowing sun Through the empires of eternal void Freedom from the final suicide Freedom fighters sent out to the sun Escape from brainwashed minds and pollution Leave the earth to all its sin and hate Find another world where freedom waits, yeah Past the stars in fields of ancient void Through the shields of darkness where they find Love upon a land a world unknown Where the sons of freedom make their home Leave the earth to Satan and his slaves Leave them to their future in their grave Make a home where love is there to stay Peace and happiness in every day
