I don't think people realize how hard it was for a guy with a voice like Dio to sing Ozzy's songs. On one hand you don't just want him to imitate Ozzy, but on the other hand you want him to capture the spirit of the 70s songs rather than try to make them sound like Heaven & Hell era Sabbath. I think he hit a really good balance between those two extremes here.
@randallamps

Yes, it was very hard for Dio to cut thru the mix like Ozzy on Sabbath songs.

I disagree, for the most part. I think Children of The Grave works fantastically (but rarely played!), but War Pigs and Black Sabbath don't. However, I've always found it more pronounced on Live Evil than other recordings - not sure why that is. War Pigs was of course played with Elf, so it's not like he didn't choose to sing it. Plus "My name is.. LUCIFER! Pleeeaaase take my hand!!" always made me smile. Perhaps controversially, I'd say Tony Martin did a better job on Ozzy songs than Dio did (before Dehumaniser, anyway).

N.I.B is great with Dio. Love both ozzy's and Dios much the same. Black Sabbath not so much with Dio. War Pigs is ok - much much better with his ELF version of War Pigs - that is a really great cover.

I have nothing against how he sung them, he did a fine job. He's only guilty of not sounding like Ozzy when he did it. On the other hand, if I sing Ozzy, I'm fairly Ozzylike.... and if I sing Dio, God only knows lol... might come out like Udo Dirkschneider or Bon Scott trying to do Dio lol... and not well LOL

@@lta6494 It was mainly Ozzy's fault, He couldn't stand the fact of Sabbath continuing with a better singer than him and having huge success which I never understood bc while Sabbath was having success ozzy was having success aswell. Ozzy used to bring a Dwarf on stage and called him Ronnie just to mock Dio, That was uncalled for and very disrespectful thing to do to a fellow singer and muscian in Metal. I don't blame one bit the things Dio said about ozzy like (Clown) and other things. Ozzy did reached to Wendy when Dio was dying but there was never an apology between them.

You must have great teen memories about it bro, So magical discovering music back then(80s). But honestly i understood the Dio problem years later, Love music and own a lot, But you can tell Dio vocals original version(dont know after that i need only one copy of an album anyway). That his vocals volume were turned down as he was trying to to turn them up when the guys weren't in the studio, Many Dio albums that are great of course the vocals are way too loud it make sound the music so far in the background. All had egos no matter how much we can appreciated them, 20s-30s are shit self centered decades

I'm 55 years old and a definitive Ozzy era fan. BUT Ronnie Dio AND Ian Gillen made AMAZING music with Sabbath. I'm a guitarist and cut my teeth on early Sab. This offering was top notch even with its controversy. Double peace signs AND Devil Horns to all us Sab nuts out there. A PLUS is the extra verses added to Heaven and Hell.

As an advit' fan and cool drummer I AM, along the lines of Bonham... I can truthfully concur, that HE is! To this day! Thanks Toni for all the times you've rescued me from duress in life, through your work and real intent!! Along the lines of Geezer, Bill, Ozzy and Dio.. P. S. VINNIE, YOUR THE BEST, since those days and especially your authentic percussion that was the foundation of live evil. Thankyou!! .. backwards spelled what you meant, forevermore!😊

I had this album ever since it came out. Still have it, original vinyl from 1982, not a scatch, plastic sleeve both outside the entire album to protect it, and plastic inner sleeves to protect the vinyl.

Dio definitely has his own style; but I think he definitely nailed it!!! Still kept the spirit of the 70's original Black Sabbath with Ozzy fronting the band!!!

En el álbum de Live Evil de 1983 los sonidos de batería y el público casi no se percibían, que bien por la remasterización.

My friend saw the show, the opening act, The Outlaws (Green Grass and High Tides) WOW! Can you imagine hearing their rendition of Ghost Riders In The Sky followed by Sabbath? With Dio? Great recording 🖤

Think that Speak of the Devil edges it out especially after that stupid E150 intro. Dio does not cut thru the mix like Ozzy on Sabbath songs. Don`t think I`m going to buy Live Evil but probably Heaven and Hell.

The vastly improved sound quality on this Remastered release of "Live Evil" is truly and absolutely mind blowing. I saw Ronnie perform with "Dio" during the Dream Evil and once more during the "Killing the Dragon" tour. And one other time during with Sabbath during the 'Dehumanizer" tour in 1992. He is my favorite singer of all time. The undisputed greatest Rock music singer of all time!!! So, can someone please reply back with the name of the venue The Sign of the Southern Cross was recorded at?? If my memory serves me right it was at an arena in either Montreal, Quebec or Toronto, Ontario.
