I couldn’t agree more & I’ve been playing bass guitar since I’ve been 14. I’ve played a lot & all different types of music in my life. But as musicians; we always tend to love what got us into music to begin with (that’s been my experience) & Geezer was my inspiration to play bass guitar while being a teenager in the 80s (graduated high school 1999) while everyone else picked up the guitar. My first teacher was a guitarist, so of course, I learned to play “1 finger per-fret” lol I’m VERY happy I was taught to play that way because when I switched to the conventional technique of guitar Bassist, it was extremely easy… pretty much a nonissue, at all? What was an issue lol was first learning how to play with a Pick! Man, lol I just couldn’t get it for about?? Hmm… about… a week… & then of course it took months to were I could actually play with a Pick, without thinking about it. Lol, It just felt such an effin unnatural motion for me lol I had been playing bass for over 20 years with using my thumb, pointer, middle and fingers lol so using a “Pick” was SO foreign to me! But! I wanted to sound EXACTLY like JPJ, while playing “Black Dog!” So I HAD to learned, how to use one to get that that sound (I figured Hell, if playing with a pick isn’t below John Paul Jones than who the f was I) that you can only get playing with a Pick. Anyways, back to Sabbath… Yeah, I love the bass playing during the guitar solo, it’s SICK, I LOVE it! It would take me a week or two to figure the entire song from start to finish, to play it EXACTLY like Geezer! I’m not going to play (cover) of someone else’s song/songs and not play it EXACTLY like the original Artist 👩‍🎨 Because in my personal opinion and I feel strongly about this! If you’re going to make money play covers it’s really AWESOME but ya gotta play it just like the original artist did and don’t make someone else’s song & turn it into your own song, I hate that! I know… sometimes you may not have the right gear to play it EXACTLY like the original artist. So if you getting paid… by all means get through the song! All I’m saying is don’t strive to make another artist work (cover song) into your own song. Because it is TOTALLY disrespectful towards the original Artist. That just my humble opinion, feelings about it..?

Just a tidbit, most of these fills are improv by Geezer because of the fact that Black Sabbath is a blues band.
@CoverSolutions
@CoverSolutions 3 жыл бұрын
not necesarilly. I'd say Sabbath are the Riff inventors almost, and to learn a riff you have to practice it a bit. But in some way you are right, some of them are improvised and also some of the licks you can hear in other songs

@@tomk121 Correct! Looser strings. Side effect, of course, was a guitar tone so deep and doomy that it influenced...well, every subsequent metal band!
@michaelmasiello6752
@michaelmasiello6752 3 жыл бұрын
@arcanehornet If you Google this you'll find lots of information about it, but there is a common-sense answer to this too. The lowest note sounded in this song dictates the tuning of the top string. When you see CS hit the open string and its octave on the seventh fret of the next, you realize immediately why the tuning is what it is: this is what it takes to duplicate the pitches in the song. It also shouldn't need saying that lower tunings produce deeper and, usually, heavier tonalities. Black Sabbath influenced, both directly and indirectly, so many heavy bands across various heavy-music genres--Electric Wizard, Sleep, Mastodon, High on Fire, Soundgarden, Tool, and I could just keep going--that their choice to tune their instruments down after the debut and Paranoid has an almost seismic significance for a whole class of bands over the ensuing decades. And if you want to HEAR the difference, play Paranoid and Master of Reality back to back, and ask yourself how it is that the latter is so much heavier and more bone-shaking. Both albums are Sabbath classics, but there is a thick, warm sludginess on Master of Reality that does not exist on Paranoid, and this comes, in part, from the expanded low-end range.
@hoist8111
@hoist8111 3 жыл бұрын
I always heard the bass part in the verses as just doubling the guitar part. I'm sure your written part is accurate and it sounds normal in the original mix, but hearing the part louder, the pauses are so jarring.
