John Bonham liked Supernaut as well. When Zeppelin and Sabbath got together to jam in 1973, Bonzo wanted to jam on Bill Ward's drum set to Supernaut. Bill told him no, because Bonzo broke his last drum set. "Got no religion. Don't need no friends. Got all I want, I don't need to pretend. Don't try to reach me because I'll tear off your mind. I've seen the future and I've left it behind."

Awesome breakdown of one of my favorite songs. I loved "Supernaut" since I was a toddler and our stoner neighbors in Marina Del Rey blasted Sabbath24/7 back around '75-'76 till one of them kicked the bucket on scag. I'm forever grateful to them for getting me into Sabbath at an early age. Iommi was always one of my earliest influences. Some of the first songs I learned on guitar at the age of eleven were Sabbath tunes. C# tuning is step one to Sabbath's black magic.

@@DoesItDoom YES! That would be great. Symptom was the birth of an entirely new genre, as if Sabbath weren't breaking new ground already. Had to share your Supernaut Sound. Thought it was fantastic how you got "the sound." It's the closest I've ever heard anyone get to it. Apart from Iommi!!

Weird, when I play the Vol. 4 track, I'm not hearing the dual-note chord two frets above the 'D' chord shape (the one you say I actually a B, because of the tuning). It must be buried in the wall of sound on the album, I think they used 3 or 4 guitars on top of each other. Did Tony Iommi play it that way live or something? Really cool lesson, though. Love that SG with the P-90s. Through the amp, it nails the tone exactly. Peace.

If you watch to the end of the video you can see him play it that way live. I don’t really hear it on the record much either (although I think perhaps he’s just playing the 3rd and forth strings?). Any live footage I’ve seen he always does it though.

@@DoesItDoom Whattaya know, I just noticed he went up to that second chord as well. Ya learn something new every day. :-) Missed it the first time. Maybe he added it after the song was recorded. Still, cool to see how the song is played. I only learned it in Open G tuning, because that's all I use on my electrics. Fun song to play, that's for sure.

Generally if you want to get into down tuning and want your guitar to play well, you need to increase string gauge, reset neck relief, reset action, and reset intonation. Download my tuning guide here doesitdoom.com/tuningguide

Depends what kind of amp you've got. Tony's classic tone is an overwound bridge P90 pickup with the volume backed off to 8-9 and the treble at full running into low gain vintage tube amp (Laney Supergroup) boosted with a slightly modified Rangemaster germanium boost.
