I've always compared this show to a novel, because the first season really doesn't take any shortcuts in terms of developing characters in a realistic, careful way. The first season was slow, but Chris is right, when you revisit the show as a whole SO many of the most devastating moments are dependent on elements established in season 1. Everything from the environment to Silver & Flint's relationship, the impact of Vane on the collective pirate mentality, Eleanor's priorities, etc. This show is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else on television in terms of being a cohesive, compact, incredible story, and I'm mad it doesn't get the amount of exposure it deserves, but at the same time I feel like the lack of outside influences allowed the writers to tell the story they wanted to tell. (Social media really messed with how Game of Thrones, Westworld and more turned out.) Oh MAN I LOVE BLACK SAILS. I remember watching the finale 3 years ago and losing my freaking MIND, it was such a fantastic ending for everything they've set up! You guys are going to love it!

It's crazy to me how even though Flint and Gates knew each other from the beginning Flint didn't hesitate to kill him when he tried to stand in his way. On the other hand he's known Silver for less than a year, Silver is actively trying to sabotage his cause, undo everything he's been fighting towards for the past 10 years and still he couldn't kill him. He literally shot his only ally on the island to save Silver's life, even after the betrayal.

It's been great watching you get completely engrossed in the show despite your early reservations (and appreciate your acknowledgement of everyone's advice to stick with it because the slow build WILL pay off). It will probably never gain the mass audience it deserves for the same reasons no one was watching ti while it aired, but there's no denying it's one of the greatest TV shows ever produced - damn near perfect by any conceivable metric you care to measure it by. As for what comes next? I think it would be really cool to maintain a theme and dedicate this slot in your schedule to one of the top-tier genre entries of the past decade or so that may have been unfairly overlooked (much like this was due to GoT being on at the same time). There are so, so many absolutely amazing high-end productions in the genre area that AREN'T sci-fi, have smaller runs of 3-4 seasons and never got the audience they deserved for whatever reasons. In most recent years there has been Banshee, Strike Back, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Warrior, and so many more. Go back a few years and you've got Spartacus (another example where you have to get through a truly awful pilot and a couple of episodes of set-up, but if you aren't fully onboard by the mid-way point of season 1, there's something very wrong), Justified etc . . . and then if you go back a little further you have Deadwood, Rome, The Wire, etc. So yeah, that's my vote - keep the slot genre, keep it under-appreciated, keep it prestige production values. Please?

I don't get the silver hate. Flint shooting Dooley is both a show of what Silver means to Flint but also of how disposable he sees his men. Dooley was loyal and risked it all for him and he killed him no question. Which is what Silver was just saying. He both proved Silver was his true friend and proved Silver's point. It's beautiful writing. Neither is right. Neither is wrong.

Here’s what Jonathan Steinberg (co-creator of Black Sails) had to say about John Silver’s past: “It’s been a conversation since the beginning; we’ve always defined him as someone from nowhere. That is the counterpoint between Flint and Silver - where Flint is so thoroughly defined by a backstory, he was going to be attracted to and be undone by someone who comes from the opposite place. It was not credible that he didn’t have a story. There’s a hint that wherever he comes from is pretty dark. It felt right to not put words to it. It was so awful, it was something he couldn’t speak about. That that’s all you need to know. It meant more in relation to him and Flint. In a subtle but powerful way, they see the world and themselves very differently.”

Their isn't really a single character I consider good or bad in this show. As all of them made the most rational choices to them. Like Woods Rodgers. Sure you can say him bringing the Spanish killed her. But he had a plan and he would have never had to go ro them if it wasn't for the pirates. And right his only options are to get the treasure. Or be fucking screwed even if he survives he will be thrown in Jail for the rest of his life. And yet he's still trying to find a solution that isn't terrible when he doesn't have to.

Maybe I always thought that maybe in his past he had someone he loved but some decision he made lead to him losing her or choosing something over her and that he swore to himself if he ever had to make a choice again that he would go with the women he loved. Which if that was the case it would make sense as to why he didn't want to tell Flint. Because could Flint truly trust someone who would put something else before the War. Sure Flint knew he loved Madi. But not sure he thought he loved her deeply enough to chose the her over the War and the treasure.

the big reason Silver went to fight Flint at the end is because with Flint killing Dooley, it's yet another ill-fated partner Flint has killed to further his own agenda. It's possible that Madi didn’t love Silver the same way he did her. Or would have been willing to sacrifice or betray for the life of a loved one. She is too political. Silver loves Madi more than anything. He was never political on the same level as Madi or Flint. And the latter had started this war because of the losses of 2 people he loved. Sliver loved Madi more than anything. Flint understands this, but has no real compassion for Silver's feelings. And either you guys don't understand or you don't want to understand for the sake of the story.
