I'm getting goosebumps every time someone gets to shoooot! But I would have liked to to see some of the movement phase, especially the turning part. That's one thing I don't quite understand

Yeah, I keep being tempted to pick this up, as I love playing naval games on the computer, I enjoy shows/movies on the topic, and I do not actually enjoy making terrain. Pluss, I feel I would rather paint a ship rather than a bunch of guys.

I want to say it was woodland scenic snow for basing and terrain. It had a very fine texture to it that worked well.

good battle report, looks like a really nice system, not too much nonsense to get your head around. From a modelling perspective I'd prefer the sails were plastic though and the idea of doing rigging is totally off-putting.

I would say you could’ve called the British 3rd rate HMS Namur (which has more battle honours than HMS Victory) but she was a second rate that was razeed into a 74 gun 3rd rate in 1805 so you’d probably have to use the newer razeed kits unless you’re not too bothered

It would be interesting to see the National traits used. I also noticed there were critical hits for both hull and rigging. Did you just agree to use that table? Is it a die roll or do you declare in advance? I know the Roayal Navy ppprefered to fire at the hull and the French te did to aim at the rigging.

Hi Greg, You have to specifically target the rigging when you shoot, and it's at a penalty to hit so neither one of us aimed for the rigging. The Rigging Critical hit table does have some good stuff on it though. The French National rule helps with shooting at rigging but even then it's no were near as good as the British national rule.

I'm not familiar with the game but enjoyed it though I would think that the ships acting as cover would have been shredded( I kept imagining the look on the cover ships crew faces as cannons blast away on either side of them- bet the decks were awash in crap....) or is that an advanced rule?

you know you have the option to fire after each individual move ..there were a couple times you didn't have to use fire as she bears...that's most a defensive (non moving player) thing

Thanks for the video. I really like the Black Seas ships although they are a lot of work. I addition to your comments I disagree with the "Fire as she bears" rules. In real life all movement is simultaneous so all firing is "Fire as she bears" assuming the gun crew had enough time to reload. So why is there a penalty? The rules don't specify turn time, reload time, or actual ranges and distances. So I think one movement leg could be enough time to reload. Also there should be a way to track crew loses from critical and other hits. Casualties would reduce the number of guns/broadsides a ship could fire and reduce its effectiveness in boarding actions. This is why grape shot was commonly used at close range. I also don't understand why you can't shoot on the turn you change ammunition. I would assume that all types of ammunition would be available on the gun decks and resupplied as required. Thanks again and I would be interested in any other "house rules" you come up with.

I beleive ammo is because unload/reload takes a lot of time... though in theory you should be able to fire, and right then declare you will be loading a different kind of shot. As for the fire as she bears, I just figure it is simulating firing when the ship's heel is not aligned favorably or something to that effect. That is really just me making up reasons though.

Great video, sadly nothing since :( Hard to find time for everything I guess. While the national rules add some flavour I think they are better applied to one or two ships rather than across the whole fleet, the British rules are too OP IMO to apply to EVERY ship, especially when playing against the Spanish where every rule is a negative, aside from the over-gunned 1st rate bonus but even that comes with penalties. They are optional of course so you can leave them out but adding them to just one or two ships per fleet adds flavour without the massive imbalance. It might be historically correct but it's also a game where both players need to get a good experience, I've seen many people complain that using the Spanish with national rules gets tiresome real fast. Pity they didn't do a set of gameplay based special rules alongside the historical, rules that didn't include giving every ship in one fleet a 60% chance to hit every time vs 50%. That's some upgrade!

black seas to me is a much better game than victory at sea. dunno what it is but the battles just seem more realistic and thematic and the rules are just easy and breazy
