Set during the dark days of the Second World War, “Black Sheep” chronicles a Waffen-SS troop detachment on anti-partisan duties in occupied Yugoslavia.
Taken from the German and Polish perspectives, this film gives insights into German sentiments felt and experienced during the war and follows how those sentiments manifested themselves when faced with something other than utter compliance from the populace [polish resistance fighters].
Witnessed in tandem alongside German operations and activities, the Partisan perspective allows a “full-circle” view of how the non-uniformed combatants dealt with a foreign entity that was completely deaf to reason or practicality outside of military value. Connoting strong anti-war sentiments in this way, a unique dichotomy is established between these two institutions and their dealings ultimately end up in the loss of the just individuals involved. This film does a service to the struggles and losses experienced by those who were swept up by the tide of war and strife at the behest of the Nazi regime and ultimately serves to showcase the futility in the act that men call “war”. Enjoy!

For those who do not know - the film-production quality "Steadycams" are very expensive (not the ones you see on sale at B&H/Adorama). Also, some of the motion "camera work" represents the view from the soldier's/partisan's perspective - i.e. like a reality show. This is not a "Hollywood" production, let us appreciate the work and efforts of "Fallen Grove Productions", it is not easy to produce a film/movie. Ciao, L (Veteran).

@@IronTitanProductions I liked it, it's VERY hard to watch and invokes anger and resentment in me towards Germans, my family was persecuted by you people and almost ceased to exist. But thankfully my grandmother survived the genocide, as I don't like to call it a war because war is a conflict between Military forces of two or more nations. What you Germans did was genocide not war, and please forgive me if I'm coming at you harshly I don't hate you but I hate what your country did to my people and millions of other innocent and unarmed civilians, especially children whom society especially soldiers who are supposed to protect them. And hopefully this movie will make future generations reflect and not get caught up in ideology, as the one guy said at the home of the partisan woman. "This is an ideological war, and those who don't conform should be removed". So not only did the Nazi regimen spread thier Ideology, and went to war over it, but they punished and forbid their people and their soldiers from having the basic human right of morals, and conciense. This really was one of the most darkest times in humanity, and for Europe.

A perspective from both sides of the conflict. Ultimately, it shows the "human(e) in most people. I thought this was well done and I thank you so much for posting. My god, I want to see more like this! I read a book years and years ago called "I was there". If I remember correctly it was based on WWII, but from the German foot soldier's perspective and even though you hated what Nazi Germany stood for, that book gave you a perspective from a young German soldier's point of view. An excellent read, and this video reminded me of that book in so many ways. Well done and again, thank you.

I've read a great many of the comments, some praise, some constructive criticisms, some just stupid criticisms... so how about I just really enjoyed this film? Sure, this wasn't a multi-million dollar flick with big name actors and a huge studio for the special effects and native-speaking actors flown in and all the massively expensive stuff it takes these days to satisfy an audience that wants to see something absolutely, precisely impossible to tell from the real thing. But I loved it. I was deeply moved by the tragedy of this story.

Interesting movie. I am croatian, but my mother's father served as a volunteer in the german army. (According to my father, in the Wehrmacht, but my mother told me that her father kept pictures of him in uniform that had to be kept hidden from anyone, otherwise he would be “punished” - so maybe even SS). I don't know a lot of his war stories, other than that he praised the german weapons and did kill. I was still a young teenager, living in Germany and only visited my grandfather once a year in croatia. Back then I didn't know a lot about WW2 other than it was a war. But I remember him telling how he mowed down serbian partisans and later russian soldiers with a fully automatic weapon. When he described it, he held his hands the typical way you hold an MP40. Since this was a weapon only issued to unit leaders, he must have at least been a sergeant. In the end, he was captured near vienna. The brits would often hand croatian and slovenian POWs over to the serbs, who would kill them all. Somehow, my grandfather survived. He was a withdrawn man, but when he talked about WW2, it was like he talked about the best time in his life. He hated communists, considered yugoslavia the “greater serbian empire” and said that “Germany and Croatia are eternal brothers in arms”. He predicted that once the Soviet Union crumbles, the croats will rise again and throw the serbs out of their country. Which is what happened. This is everything I know about him since, because like I said, he was very withdrawn. He was always working, had three jobs - he was a farmer, a coal miner and he brew his own liquor called “Sliwowitz”, just to sell it - and didn't talk a lot in general. Only WW2 got him talkative. I was 15 when the yugoslavian war broke out and haven't seen him ever since. He died in 1995. But my two uncles both served in the yugoslav war, and one still suffers from PTSD. The story of croats in WW2 never gets told. There still are hostilities between serbs and croats, and a debate among historians about which side killed more POWs and civilians. The massacres there don't get a lot of attention outside of former yugoslavia. And I always found it strange that my uncle couldn't handle the atrocities of war, while my grandfather kept his photos (that I have never seen) with pride and had glooming eyes when he talked about his combat experiences. It was a totally different generation. Very tough, hard people. A modern person can't get in their heads. They were products of their time and thankfully, as people we all evolved.

Or perhaps he wasn't telling the truth and didn't actually kill anybody or participate in any atrocities, at least directly. Often those who boast the most about killing the enemy and how war was a great time for them etc. etc. were actually clerks or supply officers or suchlike in the rear echelons, and in reality saw little or no actual combat. This could also be why he survived the aftermath, if he wasn't considered important or "guilty" enough. Your uncle on the other hand has PTSD because he was there and did that.

First comment, --this is a heart wrenching film. Congratulations! Your work is excellent at portraying the reality of someone being ordered to annihilate a fellow human being in a remote location for some distant cause, truly, a very stark depiction of combat. I have watched a number of these quasi-amateur productions, and the production values are professional and very, very, engaging in their presentation. As I said above, this is a heart-wrenching film and kudos to the actors and production staff! From a film making perspective, the first-person 'shaky-cam' style in your production was well-done but can be over used and tends to disorient the audience quickly. While used to good effect in this film --by conveying the confusion and immediacy of an intense situation. But afterwards, the viewer needs to have his perspective rapidly reoriented to the Director's thrust of the plot or a nauseous interlude occurs. In other words, don't bring the audience so close to the action for too long, but keep them just close enough to stay engaged. Here is where the trick of presentation is the key. Move from the 'tactical' to the 'strategic' viewpoint of the battle. This will allow the audience a moment to reflect on the personalities and motivations of the actors involved in the scene, and let them consider how they would react at that point in the story.

"Black Sheep" was an interesting, and often riveting insight into the slaughterhouse called war. It exposed meaningless twisted ideals of honour, where, it was deemed militarily "right" to shoot a young woman in the back. I did like the frequency of the patrols, which were militaristically, very true to form. Patrols are often sent out with little warning of operations and hardly any time to prepare. What I did find distasteful were when the Germans were actually shooting at each other. I cannot bear treachery. A soldier must always be loyal to his own side. He is obliged at all times to look after the interests of his/her own side and his/her own men. We also saw the futility of the father at home encouraging his sons to fight for the Fuhrer. All-in-all a very good film, Well done!

Yes a soldier must be loyal to his own side, but a soldier also has the moral right to either disagree with an Ideology set forth by the Government, or ask that he be discharged if it goes against his moral values. The US military has a rule that, any soldier can refuse and order if it goes against his moral values, and not be punished for it. At the Nuremberg trials, the "I was just following orders" didn't have a leg to stand on, as one of the British judges made clear that, any soldier, according to the Geneva convention, has the right to refuse to follow the order if he feels that it is against his religion and morals. One of the defense lawyers for one of the Nazi criminals stated. ' I refuse to continue defending my client any further, " He knew the laws of war, and following orders, has been dismissed as a defense.

@@deltaboy767 Ashley, in your analysis you forgot to add that it is the duty of a soldier to follow the orders of a superior Officer. You can be shot for refusing to obey such orders. Let me give you an example.... An 88 mm flak gun commander was given the order to use his gun in the anti-tank role. He refused initially. Whereupon a German Officer approached him and ordered that he depress his elevation and engage the enemy tanks and be given a medal, or else he would be shot on the spot he stood. That is war.

@@LaHayeSaint Against another enemy army yes i can totally agree. But against unarmed civilians like the Whermarct and the SS did, no they have a right to refuse or ask to be discharged from duty. Like I've mentioned before. The "I was only following orders" did not stand up as a legitimate defense in the Nuremberg trials. There was a hazing incident towards some civilians in NC near the Marine base, in peace time that was put on trial and when the Marine told the military court he was following orders, the judge dismissed it, saying again he had the right to refuse the order based on his moral principles or be discharged. And was sentanced to 25 years. In peace time. What the Germans did was genocide plain and simple, they were not defending their homeland from an outside invasion, they ware commiting and idealogical act of aggression. There is no excuse for genocide, and murdering civilians because one was simply given an order.

@@deltaboy767 Ashley, Morally, I'm with you all the way. When you know you are committing plain and simple murder, I would refuse (top tip -- make sure you are armed with at least a light machine gun). An Officer could however, ask for written and signed orders. This does not exonerate him from murder, but the superior officer might think twice about the order this time, as it bears his signature. If you take a step back in time, genocide of supposedly inferior peoples, has been going on ever since the days of colonisation. Great Britain really did have dirty hands in this matter. The easiest way to transfer new land to colonists, was to start a fight with the "natives," call in the army to carry out the genocide, then call in the missionaries to preach "no violence" and "love one another" (only after the native population has been reduced 95%), and you have your land. The new landowners can now go church and preach righteousness and how hard work (for the natives) will win you a place in heaven. Done and dusted! Land transfer completed.

This movie is like a high school play. Leave aside the fact that all the props in it from the wooden structures to the uniforms and equipment are brand new and completely unrealistic, the idea that there were SS soldiers who had qualms about killing partisans or anybody for that matter is silly. It's like the protagonist somehow missed basic training and walked into the war as a civilian. The Waffen SS was an elite corp chosen for their willingness to be ruthless. This movie smells of German revisionism - "Our boys were good kids who were forced to do what they didn''t want to do." Watch the Nazi rallies, the faces of the German youth at the start of the war - They wanted the war and the anticipated glory, as ignorant young men almost always do. Some regular German army units did object to killing civilians but the Wafffen SS was the answer to that.

Royal Mason while I agree that the protagonist was soft, and it made it lack a little authenticity, to say that all Waffen SS men had no qualms about shooting civilians would be to ignore many memoirs of soldiers who served in the Waffen SS. They were first and foremost shock combat troops. Most of their war crimes were acts of reprisal against partisans. The Allgemeine SS on the other hand... they were ruthless and purpose built for slaughter.

To portait partisans as civilians and punish killing of civilians as war crimes, when it was only done because the partisans (who were criminals and illegal combattants) continued their guerilla warfare and murdered soldiers, is the perverted way the victors of WWII punish Germany for losing the war which was forced on it.
@LoyaltyasHonor
@LoyaltyasHonor 6 жыл бұрын
@@daeph123 isn't it convenient how the masses like to forget that reprisals were condoned by the Geneva Convention but we changed the rules after the war was over and then held the Germans to that standard whilst the U.S. secretary of war stated months before pearl harbor that the entire US strategy in the Pacific was to get bombers close enough to firebomb Japanese civilians until they gave up.and we did just that. No war crimes there though, that's totally legit, but reprisals against partisans.. oh boy that's the vilest thing I ever did hear of.
