I was a skinny long blonde haired 19 year old Kid from NY when I moved straight to the apts literally in front of the V-land channel in 1979 and brought my 1978 MR Twin. I quickly became friends with Perry Dane, Jr, Alika, Squiddy, Buttons, Timmy Cavalo and the rest of the V land boys as they would hang on my porch smoking and watching the surf and MTV. I watched on the beach from 5 yards away as Perry collapsed the left eye socket of Johnny Boy who just started surfing v land from the west side. He disrespected Timmy Labrador in the Line up. He never saw it coming... Met Eddie after I worked at T&C sanding surfboards which sponsored his kids. He had a tight hold on the North shore. No joke. . He later built many homes all along the backyards beach front.I liked and respected him as he was always friendly to me. I lived there 18 beautiful years. Was a surfer kids dream come true. Aloha Hawaii!!

Fast Eddie and the Hui, the Black Shorts gang. They were surfers that were also drug dealers and enforcers. Cross them in any way, and it didn't take much, and hella violence would rain down. If you were not a member, you could forget surfing Rocky Point. Fast Eddie was a very shrewd guy. So extensive was their influence on the North Shore that they were on the radar of at least two federal agencies. But fast Eddie was always two steps ahead of them. That was then. We are all kupuna now. And I have no idea who controls the underworld out there these days. Eddie's two sons have become legendary wave riders in their own right. Even at the height of my surfing the North Shore, I never wanted to live out there with that uneasy mixture of locals and crazy transient surfers. It always felt so good to have a session, get some beer at Paalaa Kai store and drive back into town. The hell away from all that madness.

They lived across the street from V-land. I respected them. The guys accumulated around rocky point near the Gracie home. Not so much respect for them during the initial times. You guys had no respect for anyone on any of the waves.I never had any serious problems because I respected. Just like in Brasil, everyone dropped in on everyone. I know, I lived in Brasil since 1995. It was a culture thing. But it was actually 2 things going on that changed the way people thought of Brazilian surfers over time.
