This is misreading fanon on interracial relationship. He was commenting on a play by Kayotte -a black female Martinique novelist -whose play became very popular in white spaces. The black female in that play would "love to get married but only to whites" and her reason is the desire for a "beautiful" light skinned baby. Now this speaks to the association of whiteness as a measure for beauty. What fanon did was to actually expose, how whiteness -because black was (to some extent continue being ) seen as lesser of a human, ugly, evil therefore one desires whiteness/to be close to whiteness. Blackness as condition created by whiteness, most folks affirm to it without really interrogating thus Fanon was critiquing that aspect. That in fact the play affirms to, and perpetuates the agenda of whiteness

The issue with me isn't so much the interracial element, it's the power and colorism of global white supremacy that reasserts itself within the trends of who dates who. If interracial relationships were truly interracial, we would see a hodgepodge of ethnicities dating one another. Vietnamese man, and a nigerian woman; Sweedish woman, and an indigenous Mexican man; ...or the most common humans on earth--> Indian Man with a Chinese woman (feel free to mix and match genders, although their selection here was deliberate). Usually, however, "interracial relationship" is simply code for white people dating outside of their socially-constructed race. Within such a framing, white remains constantly present and relevant, and the pervasive silence surrounding eurocentric beauty standards imposed on the world ensures that white is the more advantaged within the pair (is afforded greater freedom in selection, for example). From what I've observed, interracial seems to imply the set up of either a Black man and the white women willing to date them (more common in the U.S.), or white men dating the women of the world. Obviously there are exceptions, and to point to unique cases or outliers is futile in the face of discussing general trends. A myriad of forces are at work here (e.g. socio-economic and cultural proximity when minorities are forced to assimilate in predominantly white spaces), but when analyzing along both race AND gender AND sexuality, clear trends emerge, and can most likely be traced to white supremacist and patriarchal power hierarchies found throughout the world.

Yacob Zuriaw I feel this comment might just be a product of your experience. In the UK an interracial relationship is just that. It doesn’t mean it features any white.

French is a language as well as a culture. You cannot separate Frenchness from Fanon (especially since he leans so heavily into language) any more that you can take his blackness. It's called intersectionality. And it applies here.
@ao19204 жыл бұрын
@@supersovak You are an idiot! The language has nothing to do with his intellect (black excellence). He could also write those insights of him suffering from racism in any language he wanted to if he learned that particular language. It was the pains he saw his people going through which he expressed in a particular language which was in this case the french language. If he would've lived (or born) in England or South Africa (dutch/afrikaans) he will write accordingly to their language because he has no choice other than write in that particular language which is by the way a language which was forced upon the oppressed. There is nothing to be proud of speaking the language of your oppressor. In fact, it is damaging to the psyche of the oppressed because it is brainwashing their consciousness. Goodbye, troll!

While I see the points made by people advocating against interracial marriage and relationships, I wonder what is the logical conclusion to this? According to them, should there ever be interracial marriage? Will there be a point at which it will be acceptable? And if not - are we supposed to be a divided people on earth? And why draw the line at race? What about other socio-economic factors? Does a black man from a north american middle class background not have more in common with a white woman from the same background as a Senegalese woman from the working class there?

African American vernacular? I think you missed the plot, my friend. It's not about a dialect or accent spoken, It's about the language. An Englishman and a man from Madagascan spend 3 months in Germany and neither speaks German. Which one do you think will have an easier stay in Germany?
@drsheritomlin26424 жыл бұрын
If you listen to more of Brother Umar’s speeches you will hear him say people should marry whoever they want to be with however the reason why he’s saying Black men should marry black women is mainly because they are the least likely to be married, society is making us look as if we are the least desirable people on the planet, now they are telling us white women are better than us and it just helps our family overall if we are married and have a black man in the home raising our children with us so that we can build a stronger community and change what we see now.

I don't feel you really addressed the issues around interracial relationships. For instance: "How can you love Obama and hate on interracial relationships?" That's the dialectic. You can hate the process of something and still find utility in the product. I love the video, but just feel some nuance got left out. Umar may be a charlatan, but it's worth taking the time to really deconstruct and address his thought on black versus interracial marriage.

It's embarrassing for you. Fanon was not opposed to interracial relationships. He was married to Josie Fanon. Furthermore, before opposing your opinion to Fanon's on the Internet, maybe read the whole book or the whole chapter you are talking about. The most important chapter in the book is "The Lived Experience of the Black Man." And you really need to humble yourself. It is a complex book.
