Thanks for introducing me to this insect. In 2019, we wanted to “grow” them but realized we would never have enough food to feed them. Got quail in March,2020 and began seeing BSF adults under the pen. Now we have thousands of larvae eating quail waste and food spillage. We love ‘em.

This may seem like an odd question, but can your quail consume the BSFL or do you only use them to dispose of the quail waste?

The odor problem can be very well addressed with EM-4. I have also a way to multiply EM-4 right at the farm making its usage extremely cheap. And since the BFS adults are attracted by bacteria growing in the food scraps as already scientifically demonstrated I have also observed that EM-4 bacteria consortium is ideal to : 1. Repels house flies 2. Atract BSF adults.

A well aerobic compost heap with good bedding should attract them if you live in an area where they live naturally. You could try a slightly higher green to brown ratio to pull them in. Once they're there they bring in others. Over winter put some of the finished larvae in a nearby garden or plant box so you get them the next warm season

1:40 "Hey, you guys want to take a break from eating dinner and check out my bucket of live maggots? No need to stand up, I'll bring them to the table. I have them in a clear container, so I can put it on the table next to the yellow rice." Cue the serious music: 9:10 "odor abatement is important. Odor production can be a real challenge and I'll go over how we can mitigate that." Just a funny coincidence. as if it would follow with "Have you or a loved one suffered from odor? Call now, get help... we care."

I had some pop up in my worm bin, I was not sure what they were. After a while they started hatching and were all over my grow room. Since the adult fly only lives about a week, I am leaving them for the time being. I wonder if they will lay in the worm bin again and repeat the cycle?

You are making great videos, but if I might make a suggestion, you need to go over your closed caption texts. Closed captions are the only way that non-hearing people can enjoy your videos unless you focus on your face enough all the time to do lip reading. The KZbin software for closed caption does not handle regional accents well and you often end up with nonsense. So please for your hearing disabled viewers, always check your closed caption text before posting.

Maybe they can put a screen above the food and the cardboard on top so the house flies can't lay egg.
@nathanrogers87136 жыл бұрын
Others have found that the BSFL will eat the housefly eggs putting a stop to the life cycle. Once the BSFL are established, the houseflies are unlikely to be an issue.

termites are social insects (like bees & ants)who live in colonies. unlike bsfl you cannot simply attract a commoner among termites to lay eggs because they are not fertile. also Queen termites do not emerge year round, you cannot manage waste with termites. also unlike BSF they are a pest. so even if you successfully start a colony most likely it will not be viable.
@rattlerjake23626 жыл бұрын
The most important factors are - food source, size of maggots, speed they can raised, and neither the maggot nor the adult fly are a pest/nuisance.

finding infomation on bsf is difficult i have a pod set up with I put 700 in and they were doing good but the last two days they just went lazy. I was finding some that looked like they may already been pupating or just dead in the box and several that were the black pre pupa stage. I removed alot of the substrate thinking it may of been tok dry an they were burrowing instead of climbing out. However even the white large grubs are just almost dormate like the are too cold dispite the highs being 80s an at night i put the bin in the garage where it stays warmer at night. I have no idea why they have just went into a almost dead state

@jewelciappio28787 жыл бұрын
Adam Lewis They shouldn't. Bsf adults don't actually eat and therefore can't rob your bees or compete with pollen collection. The species are so different there is little risk of bsf messing with your bees. Unless you put sugary foods in the bin and the bees were super hungry.

how do you prevent green flies from getting in, or causing problems?
@nathanrogers87136 жыл бұрын
Once established, the BSFL police it themselves. They are greedy and will keep other flies out by the field expedient of just eating their eggs. No eggs, no other larva/adults.

You lost a slight portion of the validity of the whole thing when the larvae/maggots were called grubs... when if fact as you stated, these are not grubs but maggots. Other than that, I did watch all the videos... informative, and really makes me want to give this a shot here in Thailand. As an Agricultural Biology major, with emphasis on entomology, calling them grubs just kills me, haha. Good info though, thanks.

It can be done in an urban setting. These guys just destroy any and all garbage overnight. Only downside is they are gone in winter about November on. These guys love quoting climate change misinformation. Reducing waste is obviously a benefit but the idea that methane is causing "global warming" is complete nonsense. Methane, CO2 and even CO are such an insignificant fraction of the gasses in our atmosphere. H2O has the greatest affect on temperature in terms of gasses but the greatest affect is obviously the sun which we have no control over. These guys just regurgitate the same old unproven talking points in every video.
