Black Stork Nest 2, Jan and Janika, 2021

The Black Stork nest 2 is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s when black storks successfully nested here for many years. After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010. Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021. Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, it is a small miracle that the storks came back here.

Thank you for your effort in filming this, and also caring for the birds. bringing them fish. I am sorry to see all the effort of rearing and growth come to a tragic end from land predators, in a more protected area. The black stork is rare , Could the nest be closer to a lake farther away from the forest habitat where the predators dwell? I know predators have a range to hunt.. If foxes have moved into the area, you may have to set live traps and relocate them elswhere. The concern is their survival, hope they flourish against all these odds.

How exciting! What a job! I've put transmitters on lesser prairie chickens in New Mexico, desert mule deer, and grey foxes in Texas and it IS an exciting job. But we did this on the ground. I can't imagine doing this up in a tree!

O que acontece é que essas aves faz seleção dos filhotes,elas jogam para fora do ninho os mais fracos ou seja quando vê que está sendo difícil tratar de todos, então elas jogam para fora ou até mesmo se alimenta deles,entra a aí a seleção de Darwin,os menos aptos morrem ou seja; são aniquilados e os mais aptos sobrevive,pelo instinto de perpetuar os mais fortes mamães aves costumam fazer isso 👍

I wonder what happened to the chick that couldn’t sit or stand up, it started off as one of the larger chicks. Luckily the youngest chick was able to thrive and take over its place. This is why they have so many eggs to start off with and sometimes have to select out a few if all survive and thrive. It helps reduce the risk of brood failure, which would be a total lose for all the parents efforts of the breeding season.
