It's not a sport bc sport has an actual definition, but that doesn't mean it's not very challenging and impressive when people do it. edit: if you think you're going to change my mind or say something I haven't heard, you're wrong and you aren't. You're just going to make me very unpleasant to have a conversation with. Please read the actual words I've said, not what you feel like I said because your feelings are hurt, before responding. @waffleaffle2318 ай бұрын
@@littleleakyleakythere ballet fits within that definition. It is an activity that requires a lot of physical exertion and risk of injury, and dance competitions are a thing. It's taught with a mix of techniques used in art and sports.
@lauren14548 ай бұрын
@@waffleaffle231honestly it depends entirely on your definition of sport. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary requires an element of direct competition against others to be an integral part of the activity (so ballet probably wouldn’t qualify). Maybe only competition ballet? Like how ‘gaming’ is not a sport - just a hobby or a job, but esports is? However, if you define sport more broadly (e.g. Mercian Webster’s definition which just requires physical (or actually any) activity engaged in for pleasure) then ballet definitely qualifies. If you look at the etymology of the word, it comes from the Old English “disport”, which simply means pastime - no requirement for physical activity at all, although it was usually used in reference to physical pursuits. In turn, “disport” traces back to Old French and in turn Latin, for words meaning (roughly) “to carry away”. It basically means that the activity is supposed to move your attention away from serious matters - so baking or painting could be a sport if we take an etymological approach! I think ballet should qualify as a sport, but definitional arguments are always going to be tricky because there is no single definition. I guess the person you’re replying to is simply working off a different dictionary to both you and me!
