That scared me when I was younger. I still can't figure out why, though.

Is only an illusion, is not real. Nina loses control of reality by the obssession of perfection and her competition with Lily of the main role, that shows her dark side.

i was shown this as an 'inspiration' for a ballet dance i was gonna perform when I was about 10.... I had nightmares for the next weeks and I was convinced that she as the black swan was hiding under my bed, yeah that wasn't a succes ehh

Because we are familiar with our bodies. And know that type of shit just shouldn't be happening. The mere sight of it triggers a primal response

This scene is visceral, you can physically feel her metamorphosis into Odile. An energy that was inside of her all along, the only person standing in her way was her. Powerful message

I cannot imagine how her first transformations were painful unlike this one.

growing pains. Nina's character is supposed to be more like a child at the beginning of the movie. Her first transformations hurt partially because she was fighting them, still fighting for control and trying to keep herself as the little girl her mother wanted. It isn't until later where she accepts that part of her that has her own desires that change doesn't hurt. At least that's how I understood it. She stopped fighting herself and just let herself be free.

I've always thought that if they would just build the stages in theaters a few inches higher - the ballerinas wouldn't have to dance on their tippy-toes.
