Black Timberwolf engagement in Southern Missouri

Today I caught an unknown species of snake in Missouri. It was caught near water but not in it so I can’t rule out either. Although I feel like he’s a land snake. Any help identifying what kind he is?

I’d have given him all the fish I caught to keep my sandwich. I had to eat plain white bread w/ nothing on it for dinner that night as that sandwich is all I brought camping for the night…
