Но магическая мелодия "Wonderful Life" завораживала. С ней связано немало романтичных моментов... За хитом, покорившим всю Европу, стоял уроженец Ливерпуля, автор и исполнитель Колин Вирнкоумб (26 мая 1962 г. р.). Как и многие другие молодые люди в Англии конца 1970-х, он мечтал о музыкальной славе. Его первый сингл "Human Features" был подписан как Black, потому что Колин решил, что его фамилию никто не запомнит. Он не является основателем английской рок-группы "Black", но долгое время сопровождая группу, для которой написал много песен и аранжировок, стал ассоциироваться с ней. И в конце концов стиль Колина перешёл в формат чёрно-белого, как бы подчернув его принадлежность к этой группе. Название группы "Блэк" стало сценическим псевдонимом Колина. История написания этой песни трагично-фантастична. Выпустив ещё пару неуспешных синглов, Колин Вирнкоумб оказался без поддержки лейблов. Он был разорён и едва мог позволить себе разве что хлеб и молоко. После смерти отца мать Колина слегла в больницу с сердечным приступом. После случившегося выкидыша его бросает жена. В добавок кредиторы выгоняют его из квартиры. И вот в это тяжёлое время, вернувшись из магазина, сидя на чемодане около своей уже бывшей квартиры, музыкант на клочке бумаги карандашом за 10 минут нацарапал полную горькой иронии песню под названием «Wonderful Life» ("Прекрасная жизнь")... Позже композиция была записана в ливерпульской студии за 300 фунтов, вышла на Ugly Man Records и достигла 72-го места в хит-параде. На Колина Вирнкоумба обратила внимание солидная звукозаписывающая контора A&M. Был подписан контракт. Эта композиция, став супер-хитом в Англии, а затем и мировым хитом, помогла музыканту выбраться из нищеты, а присущий Вирнкоумбу романтизм сделал группу одной из самых популярных лирических групп в Великобритании. Первым хитом Black была "Sweettest Smile". А затем A&M переиздали и "Wonderful Life". Меланхоличная баллада достигла 8-го места в британском чарте и стала международным хитом. Дебютный альбом Black находился в хит-параде четыре месяца и разлетелся по миру тиражом в полтора миллиона экземпляров. Альбомы "Comedy" (1988) и "Black" (1991) не смогли повторить успех дебюта. Колин Вирнкоумб не смог вписаться в шоу-бизнес, поскольку не стремился обрастать связями и провоцировать скандалы. Несмотря на приобретенную известность, он говорил, что жизнь поп-звезды оказалась не такой, как он себе представлял: "Я был расстроен тем, как мало людей в мире музыки вызывали у меня уважение. Может быть, я просто оказался не в той компании, - говорил он в одном из интервью. - Я никогда не любил сплетничать, не умел обрастать полезными связями. Сама идея специально заводить знакомства с определенными людьми всегда была мне ненавистна". В дальнейшем он выпустил ещё ряд пластинок, записал альбом "The Accused" (1999) под собственным именем, работал с южноафриканскими музыкантами в Йоханнесбурге. Последние годы жизни он провел на юго-западе Ирландии, где проводил выставки своих картин, издавал собственные стихи. 10 января 2016 года по пути из дома в аэропорт города Корк (Ирландия) Колин попал в автомобильную аварию. У него была диагностирована травма черепа, врачи поместили его в искусственную кому, но спасти Вирнкоумба не смогли... 26 января 2016 года Колин, не приходя в сознание, скончался в возрасте 53 лет в университетской больнице города Корка. Музыкант скончался мирно, в окружении своей семьи - жены Камиллы и их троих сыновей, которые пели ему, провожая в последний путь... Его последним прижизненным релизом стала "Wonderful Life" на каталанском языке, записанная для благотворительности на барселонском телевидении. Песня, написанная в момент отчаяния, помогла собрать на благие дела более £ 7 миллионов фунтов. До сегодняшнего дня, наверное, никто не смог сказать лучше Колина Вирнкоумба о нашей прекрасной жизни: "Я стою под солнцем и мне одиноко… Не надо бояться и убегать, мне нужен друг - хоть кто-то, чтобы сделать меня счастливым..."
