The Cavelier years explain their social descent. Blackadder was a royalist and a member of nobility right up until he and Baldrick were cornered in the kitchen with the baby prince by the roundheads, when Blackadder reflected that now would be the time for a man of honour to risk everything for the king, but that being a Blackadder, he's not a man of honour and quickly changed sides and wigs.
