Blackbeard Had an Incredibly Short Career - How History Works

Күн бұрын

How did Blackbeard manage to be one of the most well-known pirates while only being one for two years? From 1716 to 1718, Blackbeard terrorized the seas, but he accomplished a lot during those two years.
During his brief but infamous career, Blackbeard became known for his distinctive appearance, which included a long beard and numerous weapons. But he was actually incredibly successful capturing over 40 ships. He also had a reputation for being ruthless and would often intimidate his victims by lighting fuses in his beard, creating a fearsome spectacle.
His most famous loot was the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina in 1718. He blockaded the port for a week and demanded a chest of medicine in exchange for lifting the blockade. The governor of South Carolina eventually acquiesced, and Blackbeard sailed away with the treasure.

@@shori8438not to mention, being a pirate is a risky and hazardous occupation. Besides the treacherousness of the sea itself, a pirate has a high chance of dying in the process of obtaining their score, especially if they're one of the pirate groups who went after British or Spanish Cargo. There's also the fact that a pirate who gets caught by the British army will be hung and executed in front of a public audience of British citizens, not to mention the torture they'll suffer at the hands of their captors. Most pirates careers are cut short due to that aspect. If they didn't die during career due to the british or spanish, they usually died from disease, or end their career early after claiming a few big scores if they're smart(and lucky).

@@madhumitadatta6400 yeah, but that was just about any seafaring occupation during that era. Being at sea for months at a time with little food and water, and no solid ground can do that to a person. Honestly that's just occupational hazard. Doesn't matter if your a pirate or a sailor. Even in the British Navy, Mutiny could be a serious issue back then.

I doubt it was only two years. Maybe only two years with his famous nickname and ship, but Edward Thatch was probably operating for much longer as a sailor and pirate before becoming his own captain. It's said that he kept his men in line by outdoing them in competitions, so he probably was already very respected and knew them all for years.
@andresamaya6187

Not so much, he wasn't reported as a pirate until the laid off Royal Navy and privateer personnel at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714 who reached Nassau alongside Henry Jennings, who first depredated the remains of the 1715 Treasure Fleet, Teach first command was a sloop given to him by his mentor Benjamin Hornigold in 1716, before 1714 Teach was probably one of hundreds of sailors on privateers but there are no records of him being a captain. Pirates also recruited men on the fly, Teach started out with 60 men on a sloop and increased it to 350 on more than five ships at the height of his power, he also wasn't too fond of them, he stranded a lot of his crew to starve to death when he ran aground the Queen Anne's Revenge, they were eventually rescued by Stede Bonnet

1. Blackbeard was very tall at 6 foot 4 (allegedly) when people were 5ft on average. 2. He was brutal and liked using fear tactics, such as lighting fuses under his hat. 3. He had an enormous vessel for a pirate, the "Queen Annes Revenge" she was a frigate with 40guns. Which means Thatch had a tier 5 warship when most ships he would have been coming across where unranked or 6th tier... 4. He gained his power as a pirate VERY quickly. He was a privateer in the "Queen Annes war" before joining Benjamin Hornigolds crew around 1716. From here Thatch was a fairly successful pirate for a breif 2 year period. The first year he spent capturing prizes alongside Benjamin Hornigold and Stede Bonnet. One such prize was the ship "La concorde" which blackbeard renamed the "Queen annes revenge" just before Hornigolds retirement in 1717. Thatch continued gaining power through the next year and shortly after dubbing himself Commodore Blackbeard in May 1718, he blockaded Charlestown for approximately 5 days capturing 9 vessels. He released the vessels and prisoners after receiving medical supplies. Add all this together and you get one of the most famous and feared pirates of all time.

Edward Teach(aka Blackbeard) was both a pirate and a privateer ( a pirate that is actually hired and paid by government officials...esp during war time). Privateers were supposed to hand over all ships,weapons,'treasure',etc. to the person/government/king,etc that imployed the pirate's services but many managed to 'spirit away' a lot of the most valued items of the time (guns/powder, tobacco,rum,knives/swords,sail cloth,etc.)and would hide these "smuggled" items in caves throughout the Americas and create often complicated maps to relocate it later. He was often terrorizing ships along the American coast during the Colonial Wars (with British and Spanish). An ancestor from my father's maternal side was a crew member. Blackbeard is a legendary hero and 'treasure hunting' is a popular hobby here. A friend from Maine,USA. ☮️☮️☮️☮️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

I've read that privateers were allowed to keep a portion of their plunder as payment for a job completed. I'm not gonna say you're wrong, I wasn't there, but I have a hard time believing they'd willingly give up their whole lot to the crown when piracy paid extremely well and many who became pirates were naval veterans of the war of Spanish succession and had some pretty grueling combat experiences.

@@xenogorwraithblade2538Indeed. Most think of the Hollywood type of pirate, but in reality, most tried to avoid bloodshed if possible. By avoiding killing the crew of a ship they attacked, they could reduce any charges they faced down to thievery/piracy, rather than murder/manslaughter. While it still carried a sentence of time served, it would often allow them to avoid an execution.

No, it’s actually because he stowed away on whitebeards ship until he saw that one of his shipmates had the devil fruit he wanted. He then proceeded to murder him and then take the fruit for himself, which then got him kicked off of the ship. He then started to make a name for himself by gathering his own crew and then becoming one of the 7 warlords of the sea. He then broke into Impel Down to gather more crew members and then showed up to the war of marine ford, where he proceeded to kill whitebeard. After that he soon became the replacement for whitebeard as one of the Four Emperors of the Sea.

Something interesting I remember from the wiki, “Teach/Thatch was a shrewd and calculating leader who spurned the use of violence, relying instead on his fearsome image to elicit the response that he desired from those whom he robbed.” If Davy Jones was the Devil of the Sea then Blackbeard was certainly the Baal of the Sea.
