Pirates wouldnt always take all you had after all. Only a handful were wanton murderers- Charles Vane and Ned Lowe to name a couple. Ned lowe in 3 years took and Burned 100 ships. I would think the more accurate claim would be we know for a fact he didn't attack any vessels and kill parts of the crew, leaving behind survivors to tell the tale or taking trophies to tie him to a given crime. THAT'S fair. But pirates usually went all or nothing historically. Either they tried for zero casualities and only went for property theft, or they killed EVERYONE and sank everything to the bottom of the sea that wasn't either a usable perishable or untraceable gold/silver. And yes, they did BOTH. The only ones that would kill people yet leave survivors to incriminate them later were Privateers (as they were under orders from the nations providing their Privateer charter to cause havoc and terror to other nations` trade networks).

If you want to make it as easy as possible to just take spoils through just getting them to surrender, it makes sense to combine a fearsome impression with a reputation for not killing your prisoners. Having a reputation for ruthless brutality will make people run away from you as fast as possible. A good strategy if your aim is to conquer territory, but not so good if your aim is to reach those people and take what they have.

Edward Teach was his real name, I believe, or possibly Thatch, historians aren't sure.
