Please DON'T drill a knife without proper clamping. A famous brasilian knife maker died years ago doing this. Yes he was using a thick leather apron. I can't stand loosing more talented inspirstions.

That's fantastic! Exactly doing these projects got me into knife making. I scattered the flemarkets for some old knives, de-rusted and polished them, and made a new handle! I love it that how you did not change the vintage look. Awesome! Edit: and of course your videos were also a big reason i finally decided to set up my own workshop. So thanks for inspiring people and for the always good content! 👍

Why did you close the old rivet holes when you were glueing the new handle on, wouldn't the old holes have helped to get a better grip for the glue?

Yes they would! I didn't know where I was going with this one to be honest :) Only after starting to work on it I decided to make it into a more "conservative" restoration.

Instead of closing the old holes and drilling new ones, I'd have cut away some of the blade to make the recurce disappear and the tang longer so it can run the entire length of the handle. Would result in a smaller but better-handling knife.

If you can get your hands on it, 30% concentrated phosphoric acid is AMAZING for cleaning up rusty old knives! I just put some on a paper towel and the rust wipes right off, in under a minute. I got mine from a friend who's in the professional kitchen deep cleaning business. They use the stuff as lime scale cleaner. Don't forget nitrile gloves and safety glasses, though. Phosphoric acid is quite corrosive. And don't forget to neutralize with baking soda after cleaning.

"Simple restoration"?
@bradleyj.fortner2203 Жыл бұрын
This wasn't a complete restoration. You cleaned it, sharpened it, and replaced the handle. The blade still looks like crap. Even if you didn't want a mirror finish, you should have at least sanded it.
@pige0nmelk Жыл бұрын
What do you think a restoration is? Edit: you edited your comment to say "it wasn't a complete restoration" instead of "it wasn't a restoration." You could've just clarified that in another comment instead of trying to obfuscate. And I would also argue that your definition of a restoration is arbitrary and yes he could've done more, but it doesn't matter because he still technically restored it. The sanding/polishing of the final product isn't what completely constitutes a restoration; it's the work put into it to make it resemble what it once was, perfect or not.
@bradleyj.fortner2203 Жыл бұрын
@@pige0nmelk Everything he did do PLUS sanding and possibly polishing the blade. I thought that was obvious from my OP.

@@Prokilla2008 How the hell is sanding the blade to give it some kind of finish magic or changing it into a completely different knife? The blade is unfinished FFS.
