Choosing the right time to set the hook when blackfish (tautog) fishing with jigs makes the difference between good catches and lost bait. This video zooms in on the tip of the rod so the viewer can see which bites to ignore and which to set the hook on. Thumbnail photo credit Tom Schlichter.

I personally love the under water video you did showing how the small fish come in and start pecking away and then the larger fish come in and steal it away. I like to drop my jig down tap the bottom 3 times then pause i call it ringing the dinner BELL i will hold my rod tip slightly elevated and wait for it to load up before lifting or like you said goes slack as they pick it up and swim off.

I fished for a while with a rod & reel commercial fisherman & he taught me this also, has worked great for me ever since with scup as well as striped bass when using live eels. I saw little or no bending of the rod during the movement, are you moving the rod with the fish, or allowing the fish to move the rod before the hook set?

If you set on the bite you always miss them. YOU suggest waiting for the fish to swim with the bait. Problem is telling when the fish is swimming with the bait. I tried a new technique this week. Once I am down on bottom I give the line a little slack. I sight fish fish when the slack goes away. Once the fish starts swimming they take out the slack and then I set.

I fluke with the baitcaster because I want the easy depth control that the flippng switch gives. I don't need that here, and the spinner is much more comfortable. So far I haven't seen anyone blackfish jig with a baitcaster, although I'm sure some people do it.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing Fishing off the Jersey coast along Sea Bright and Monmouth beach we have a lot of rock (Shrewsbury Rocks) and you loose a lot of tackle. No one uses a spinning because the first thing you have to do is jerk the fish out of the rocks. Most use conventional with heavy rods 7-8.5". And many of us use Daiwa Lexa's 300-400's, especially if we go out on overnight trips that are anywhere from 50-100 miles of shore. Water gets deep and you need the line. Plus, sometimes you have to use 10 oz sinkers. The Sea Bass are huge when you get out that far. Great videos.

@GeorgeShields
@GeorgeShields 6 жыл бұрын
I think what happens is not that the color comes off of the structure that is there. I think that the fish have a tendency to take the color of their surroundings, somewhat like we know flounder do. In this case there might be some rusted metal there and the fish changes to match that color. I have a tog video where there is a lot of white on the bottom and there were two fish in a row caught from that spot that were very light colored.
@reaperfishingnj8623

I almost always catch my fish off wrecks here in NJ. I had always thought the orange color was the actual rust coming off the wreck. ??
@GeorgeShields
@GeorgeShields 6 жыл бұрын
Watch my video from this spot in the video, and notice the color of the bottom and then the coloration of the fish that comes into the scene. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4imkImAZ6mDpMkm54s Then watch this part of the video and look at how light colored the fish is that came up from that spot. There was one fish caught just before this one that was just as light colored. I have never seen tog (BLACKfish) this light colored. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4imkImAZ6mDpMkm5s
@GeorgeShields
@GeorgeShields 6 жыл бұрын
If you notice the fish that you catch with the rust color, that color will not rub off. If you keep the fish alive on the boat it will probably change color. When the fish dies, it will lose that color as all fish do when they die. That is why I think they change their color to match the surroundings. But then again, I am not a fish biologist.
