I interpreted the "knock knock who's there" part as if Jax was somehow trying to "mock" his own fear. He keeps saying he hears something knocking "in the back of his mind" and "almost everywhere." This something is the constant fear of his new reality in in the circus. When the song is about to reach the chorus, Jax's anxiety increases and the only way he has to stop it is by doing the thing he knows how to do best: moking. fear continues to "knock" so it answers with "who is there?" and “who cares?”

As a music nerd, this is absolute ear candy. One, I love the synthwave vibe. It fits with the implication that the Digital Circus is an older computer program, as we see in the first episode we fly into an old computer from the 90s or 2000s. Not exactly the same time period, but it's a nice touch. 2:39 THE KEY CHANGE. Almost as if the first bit of the song up until now was just kind of a fact, but now it's getting serious. It's getting into his head and things are getting more intense, hence the change in key. Kovach's little "knock knock who's there" in the first prechoruses really hit hard, and really solidify that this is Jax, using his actual VA. (This was written on the first listen, before I knew that Kovach had his own verse and provided extra vocals to the last chorus. And in the runs for the word "cares" in the chorus, there's a note that seems a bit diminished, and adds to the uneasiness. (It's hard to point out in text but you can hear it at 1:05 and 2:06 ) And finally the lyrics contradict each other a lot, especially in the second verse. "And let's pretend that I care, which I don't" "I would help if I could, but I won't" It reflects the internal battle in his mind. He wants to make friends, but because of all of the suffering and pain he's witnessed in his time in the Circus, he forces himself to act sadistic and mentally puts them down in order to distance himself from them. Great track! Keep it up!

This song really reminds me of what I love most about Jax. He dissociates himself so it's easier for himself when his friends inevitably abstract. That's why they put such focus in this song about the "knock knock" is a type common of joke, yes jax does jokes an pranks and stuff, but the "knock knock" actually reminds more of the character of kauftmo, always doing bad jokes, the only character who's death really seem like affected jax... I think one of the reasons Jax is a sadistic freak is because it's a form of rebellion. He doesn't play along with Cain's games. I relate way too hard to this for it to be healthy, it’s a lot easier than some people would think to fall into this kind of attitude and I’m glad I’ve grown out of it through the love and support of my friends and family. One thing about this song is that, at parts like 0:32, it horrifically reminds me of an experience I had during an annual event my school hosted. The teachers were announcing winners and stuff, and I felt two taps on my back every time. At first I thought it was my friend messing around, because the person behind me was way too far to touch me unnoticed. But I was wrong, and it kept going until I felt like Pomni about to abstract.
