Richardson was great for the Habs especially in the playoffs last year, he got them ready to face and overcome the scary Golden Knights! Glad he gets a shot as head coach for the hawks!

Richardson and Berube are quite the pair coaching the Blackhawks/Blues. That rivalry could pick back up if the Hawks get back to playoff quality.

Sometimes these kind of hires can come with extreme risks. This is one hire where the challenges of coaching a rebuild can pay off. Luke Richardson is an excellent hire for the Chicago Blackhawks and definitely a superior hire to the rumored candidacy of Ryan Huska.

I remember you being glad when Brad Larsen was hired in Columbus last year because it was nice to see someone getting a head coaching job besides the usual 30 guys on the coaching carousel. I'd say the same thing applies here.

Awesome! I'm a non-related Richardson, but I've loved the guy before he was even drafted by the Leafs. The guy is all class. I chased down his car after a game to get him to sign an autograph. He laughed and happily signed my magazine at a traffic stop. GO LUKE!

As a Habs fan, I feel sad to see him leave. He even had to step in as bench boss while Ducharme was out of the lineup because of COVID restrictions. I hope the Habs defensemen keep growing nicely as they were with him. Thanks Luke and best of luck with Chicago!

I agree, Lindy Ruff, Paul Maurice, Peter DeBoer, Torts, Todd McLellan. All good coaches, but their time has past and they’ll get you to the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs on a good year. You know what you’re paying for.

It's not official yet, but there haven't been any denials. I'm glad the Hawks are giving him a shot, rather than going with one of the retreads. It's possible they still hang onto Derek King, either as an assistant coach, or returning to Rockford. Although, Anders Sorensen did a great job with the IceHogs this year, so King might be out of luck there. Sorensen was also operating as an "interim," so who knows? It will be interesting to see whether they let Richardson pick his own assistants right away, or hire for him initially.. They're going to need everything but a goaltender coach.

I like this. Hockey needs more new guys in head coaching. In the past few years, I got back into hockey, last time was when I was a kid and the Coyotes started in PHX,, late 90's - I followed hockey so hard! I just got back into the game, and the game is so different, but all the same coaches are still getting jobs!! Lindy Ruff, Hitchcock, Torts. There are a couple more, but that's crazy to me. Look at the NBA, you don't see Rudy Tomjonavich, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan coaching. The NFL doesn't have Jimmy Johnson, or Ditka, or any old timers, it's all youthful guys who have watched the game leave the past and progress into a new game, for better or for worse.

Blackhawks do what they always do, hire an ex assistant because the last time they hired an experienced coach they won three cups. That said, I guess they deserve some credit for not picking one off the coaching carousel... As always,we have our fingers crossed here in Chicago....

Would have loved to see him as coach of the habs after julien was fired but unfortunately the french rule prevented that. Will be missed for sure, but a great opportunity for him.

The owner of the team is Molson (not french to my ears), they decide who gets hired, not the news media. The french rule is just that: bullsh*t. I've only cared about the Habs hiring the best people for the job (like Serge Savard used to say) no matter what their origins are. I much preferred Richardson's style to Ducharme's (btw, he was hired a few months before Luke. They hired St-Louis instead, ask Gorton, he chose his coach. Ask Geoff Molson (an anglophone) about the french rule because many of us don't give a damn, hire the best guy/girl for the job instead of your buddy network. If Gorton/Hughes hired buddies (Lecavalier, St-Louis...) it's because they hired whio they wanted. We all know what the price for failing is.

Luke coached more than just game 3 vs Vegas, he was acting head coach till game 3 against Tampa. Ducharme was back home one year ago when MTL eliminated Vegas and moved on.

@@scottiepaterson192 The dude helped cover up sexual abuse just to win Stanley Cups. He was more concerned about on-ice production than the safety of a young prospect. He's not trustworthy. He should never coach another hockey game ever again. Even if it's beer hockey.

@@stoddard1953 Since that incident though, if any player has a grievance with their organization they'd only need to get a hold of their agent and the league itself would investigate. There's no world where an incident like that would be handled in house anymore. The way you described Quenneville though, he seems like a guy whose number 1 priority is the on ice product which is exactly what you want for a head coach. There's other coaching staff that deal with the development (physically and mentally) of prospects, typically the head coach is only suppose to deal with them when they're NHL ready. I just don't see a reason Quenneville wouldnt be able to get back to coaching. I don't see why he wouldn't be trustworthy as if you really believe the same thing would happen twice under his watch. Aside from that though morals don't matter over talent when it comes to professional sports, and they shouldn't. That's why I'm happy DeAngelo and Kane found their way back, and just like them, some team will eventually sign Quenneville and everyone will say what a great move it was when he turns around their team.
