This short Documentary is all about the process of creating the short film "The Colour of Light"
It was shot and edited by Johnny Wayan Sullivan!

I was one of the fortunate few to be given access ahead of its official release, and with a short timeframe to pull it off, I wanted to put this camera through its paces, to see how it would perform.
So I gathered together a few of my friends who all work within different creative industries around Perth and captured them doing what they are most passionate about. From dancing late at night in the city, an early morning photography scene in Beelu National Park, to filming in the direct harsh Australian sun, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K excelled in every situation I threw at it.
'The Colour of Light' - The short film has been uploaded to Blackmagic Official youtube page. Check it out at the link below.

Two ways I would do this. The lens has a focus depth and even if it's pretty shallow, as some of the closeups will be, you can just keep it in focus by slightly adjusting your shot distance, while checking your reference monitor (it's a feel a good camera operator develops through experience). Also, using a wide angle lens will assure a wider depth of field, and in some cases if you're wide enough, your whole image will be in focus from near to background. Shooting on the dark city streets, like they show here, I wouldn't expect to be able to shoot at a high enough F-stop to make a big difference in your depth of field. I know this camera is said to have good low light capabilities, but you're gonna sacrifice resolution by using an extremely high ISO. Probably better to shoot wide open and with the lowest possible ISO. This is also why you do multiple takes, so you can edit in the good ones in post.
@jas_bataille
@jas_bataille 5 жыл бұрын
In fact, the answer is very simple, much simple that some of the comments imply. Any good steady-cam operator know that they have to follow their subject maintaining the same distance between the lens and your subject as you follow them. And... that's it. You set the focus on your subject at a certain distance and keep that distance when moving around. Also shooting at a high F or T stop in the dark would be kinda ridiculous. Most steady cam tracking shots are made this way, the operator just stay at the same distance from the subject at all time. Here he just turn around them and follow them but no matter what he stays at the same distance. So they're always in focus. That's the answer.

@GarthDeBrunoAustin
@GarthDeBrunoAustin 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much any rig that would fit a DSLR will work with this. It's a very similar size to most DLSR's and has a screw mount underneath. I would however recommend getting a camera cage, this will give you more options for mounting Mic's, monitors and other accessories. This camera fits on the Ronin S, and other 3 axis gimbals. You do need a small adjustable plate to move it further to the left as the screw mount is not centred on the camera. Hope that helps

Hey guys, it's Johnny here, I shot and edited this BTS video and helped Garth on the shoot. Parts of this BTS has been shot on the Ursa mini as well as a GH5, a camera that I have been using for quite some time and I must admit i'm loving the colours and Images coming out of the BMPCC4K, they feel different than the GH5, more cinematic I feel like. We basically used all of the set ups that I used for the GH5 and migrated it to the pocket cam. The pocket cam certainly performs much better in low light also and i'm certainly thinking of getting one also down the line.

10:45 Noticed for your shoulder rig, you've adapted a V-mount battery. Did you just utilize usb-c to usb-port on the v-mount battery for backup power or did you connect to the 12V DC power in, with V-Mount plate? Anyway magical footage you've shot.
@Lukeredacted
@Lukeredacted 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too - but that V-Mount he's using has a Sony dummy-battery hanging off of it and no other cable going into the BMPCC4K - so I think he was actually just using the battery as a weight to make the shoulder rig more stable for that setup. It's something commonly done when you've got a little camera like that on a shoulder rig but may not have exactly the right cable to just power the camera with it.

Get a Canon/Sigma 70-200 2.8 if you can swing it. Must-have lens in the arsenal. So many uses. If you want a longer prime, go for something like a 100mm Macro lens so that you can get unique close-up detail and also focus to infinity to use as a normal long lens. Just my 2 cents!

@GarthDeBrunoAustin
@GarthDeBrunoAustin 5 жыл бұрын
That's correct! A lot of practice over the years! But basically what I did was to keep the subjects at a constant distance from me. This was tricky in one scene when the walking shot with the guy was done from the front so I had to walk backward without anyone guiding me, I then had to slow down and rotate around him to end up with the angle from behind as we continued to walk, he stayed in focus the whole time, will upload the shot and you can have a look.

That’s not how speedboosters work bro. Camera has a 2x crop for arguments sake (I’m aware it’s less.) Adapting a 1.8 FF lens makes it effectively 3.6 but you take into account the speedbooster reduction factor of .71 and that makes the lens a F 2.5

It's early days out there for all the BMPCC users. Your video is a great help in figuring out the best configurations while minimizing a lot of trial and error especially for gimbal work. I have 2 prosaic little questions from Canada: 1) I have the BMPCC 4k, the Metabones 0.71 and the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8. There's the smallest bit of play, a little wiggle, between the Metabones and the camera body - is that normal? 2) If I want to get a slightly wider 35mm equivalent FOV, say 16-20mm, any recommendations? I'm looking at the native MFT Olympus 7.5 to 14mm, 2.8 and possibly a prime MFT 10mm lens. I have the Sigma 14mm 1.8 (use it on my UMP/Movi Pro setup) but it feels heavy and big on the BMPCC (possibly too much stress on the mount?).

Hi Garth, I’m an aspiring narrative filmmaker and in the process of finishing my final draft of a film I’ve been writing for a while. I’m currently going through the stage of learning how to use this amazing camera and grade/correct the footage. I really like the look of the colours in your short here, very natural, but also very cinematic. It seems you haven’t gone too crazy with heavy LUTS or over saturated colours here. May I ask, what sort of corrections did you do in post? Any heavy grading? And did you use a creative LUT at all? Currently I’m using filmmaker Matteo Bertoli’s Natural 709 LUT on top of basic corrections and is giving me a very nice natural look. But for my film I would be aiming for a natural but cinematic kind of look, Like you have done here. Sorry for the long question but any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

The non moving lcd means for many of your low angle gimbal shots you had no idea what you were shooting. That is unacceptable for professional use. This cameras design is disaster for its intended use. GH5S has fully flexible screen.

markr041 I wouldn’t go as far to call it a disaster but it is quite useless. The cam definitely made for external monitor and full rig. I am a GH5/GH5s as well, not gonna lie that I’m a little envious of its spec, but after all GH5 is just better when it comes to the design.

Thank you Garth! In gear used there is a - Olympus MFT Lens 12-40mm f/2.8 and on footage above it seems you are using Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH OIS Lens. Which one is it? Thanks!
@GarthDeBrunoAustin
@GarthDeBrunoAustin 5 жыл бұрын
I actually used both :D they are both equally sharp and are both great lenses. the main difference is that the Olympus is a little tighter when zoomed in to 40mm but has no stabilizer, whereas the Panasonic isn't as tight but does have that amazing build in the stabilizer. I reckon to go for the Panasonic, the stabilizer helps a lot!

@@GarthDeBrunoAustin I did not see the Oly 12-40mm neither, only the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 (wich is not in the description) and the Sigma 18-35mm. Do you have which scenes did you use the Oly? Even that is the best review for BMPCC 4k with the best 3 zooms lenses options. Very well done. Congrats!

I have to say. This is blackmagic worse build quality camera. it feels like plastic shit. WHen you put a heavy lens on it. it feels like the camera body seams are going to break and it crumble in your hand.
