Blackmagic knocked it out of the park! I was honestly losing my mind over the Davinci Resolve updates...but I was literally jumping up and down when they were showing off the new camera. Full frame ursa with 16 stop of dr. Boom. Box style full frame 6K. Boom. MEDIUM FORMAT ursa. boom. It was a great day for filmmaking.

As someone who had the BMPCC4K and fell in love with BRAW, this could not be better news. While I've never really consider DSLR shaped cameras a dealbreaker, having a box shaped camera made by Blackmagic Designs is quite impressive. Now I can have all of the rigging choices that makes filmmaking easier. And with a full frame 6K camera, capable of open gate filming, I have more choices than I've had before. Although, I will probably keep my Sony FX30 when I want to sneak in some public space run and gun filming. The DSLR shaped video cameras have the benefit of not drawing attention to themselves. Anyway, the new PYXIS camera is exciting. I hope I can pick it up soon.

The PYXIS and the Ursa Cine 17K are cameras that I'm extremely excited for! The PYXIS might be the first full frame camera I'll get and will pair well with my Pocket 6K Pro. And to have a 65mm medium format cinema camera that most likely will be priced aggressively... what great times we are in for filmmaking equipment!

I'm not swapping my URSA 12K for the new 12K - (media options and size not for small to medium crews as main factors) but I'm definitely getting the pyxis 6K as my new B cam!

I was also blown away by how much they announced! My only iffy thought on the PYXIS is the screen being on the side. I imagine as a handheld shooter that it'd be awkward to have to hold your camera sideways to access menus. I guess there's really no other place for it to go, so I guess it works. But otherwise, I think the interchangeable side plates are genius! I was worried when I first saw that it was just the rubbery tripod mount, but felt better when they said it was interchangeable. Also the fact that BM will give out the exact specs in the manual so that people can make their own accessories is wild!

I think it would have been nice if PYXIS had the same screen system as the URSA so you can fold it out. I know it’s a bit of a higher end camera, so you can expect the customer to rig it out. But it’s still a very small camera, which would lend itself very well for run and gun shooting. And only having an assistant kind of monitor on the side, feels a bit „too professional“ for that kind of camera imo… What do you guys think? Also, do any of you have experience with the Blackmagic viewfinder? Does it use a lot of battery power?

The pyxis looks more friendly/balanced for rigging and using them. They should make the "pockets" pocketeables again, keeping a 4/3 and aps-c sensor to differentiate them from the pyxis line. Well priced would be difficult to not look at them.

I have a g85, the p4k still looks enticing. Assuming that blackmagic wont do anything with micro four thirds in the future, which system should i go to knowing ill have a totally different lenses set. Many folks say L mount while PL is used by many professionals in narrative work.

The URSA's look cool and fit their own niche. The PYXIS form factor seems a lot better. I wish they had gone for a smaller faster reading sensor with better frame rates. Also I get SDI but it's limiting. It would be nice to have a lower data rate H.265/4 10 bit codec. Raw is great but limits its usecase quite a bit. Also I wish there was a lanc port to use with the URSA grip or a new usb handle. I like Blackmagic and the image but there's always these minor issues that make them frustrating to use in certain professional environments

The 17k is a BEAST. That is something I never imagined. Does the Pyxis 6k have internal ND's? My eyes glued at that one or just maybe the Ursa Cine 6k. I have to make that decision carefully. Thanks for the update & looking forward for videos with you're hands on these newbies.

I mainly shoot live classical concerts as a one man operation, and constantly look for the most streamlined, quick setup possible. Currently four P4K controlled via optical hdmi and an atem mini pro. I have been yearning for a full frame as my manned main cam, and was briefly very excited about the Pyxis, but seeing that it is sdi only, I'm now less interested. The single xlr in is also an issue; not a deal breaker since I usually record audio separately, but still, it lessens the flexibility for me. Also, I'm part of the apparently tiny minority that actually like the PCC form factor, so BMCC6K is probably the way forward for me.

I'm interested in your thoughts, do you think the box camera is a legitimate upgrade or more of a side grade? A mate of mine has the cine 6k but he like others have had issue with the sensor in the shadows when dealing with high-contrast scenes with noise/sensor tearing. Has this been the case with your experience too?

Given how "general purpose" the 6k box is, it's too bad that the display is fixed on the side, not swing out/flip over. That's not a disadvantage versus the Red Komodo, for example, but it misses a potential advantage that the Blackmagic option could have offered.

The new ursa cine might get my to sell my amira. If they get the usable dynamic range around 13.5-14 stops, it's gonna be hard to resist. Though the media and need for full frame glass may hurt.

Yes, we did want a “box”. I could not find specs on the size but if that is a 4inch monitor, I imagine the camera to be about 8 inches square, give or take. For comparison B&H has the RED Komondo at 4inches square, and V Raptor at 6x4x4. So it remains to be seen what people say about the size. Jury is out for me but I am excited. But it seems like BM cannot get away from the idea of having a camera ready to shoot out of the box. I wonder if this camera will likewise NOT have ProRes as a shooting format, which the cinema camera does not have.

I think they blasted the NAB show. Personally, 13 stops of dynamic range are a bit low for a cinema camera in 2024 (the original pocket had 12 or so), and no ND filters is a bit frustrating but…yeah

Great first iteration of the box, not sure about the name tho... However a few negatives: Pixie: (great price so below is whatever) - No internal NDs but I get it, size. - Card slot at the back is never ideal for rigging 12K 2.0: - Rip side grip? I guess these two Ursas are really production cams, where as the OG Ursa design can still be great for fast paced / doc style shoots 17K 65mm: - Lack of glass, only option for the LF would be Mamiya and Blads, the stills version not crazy expensive but rehoused, oh dear. - Who is it for? I can see it being very heavy use in Indie features, access to the Alexa 65 / Panavision isn't easy so this would be the next best thing. - Price should not exceed 20k/25k

The Pyxis has a micro XLR mic connector in the front. The Ursa Cine has built-in ND filters.

Only the 17k doesn’t have ND but that’s not a deal breaker for me. You can also get rehoused Mamiya or Hassy glass that can handle the image circle . I agree on the price not being over 20-25k. They will shake things up with this one for sure if it performs as promised.

The box Pyxis looks really nice but let’s think it through for a second. Compared to the pocket 6k FF. The Pyxis: Does not have Internal ND filters No swivel monitor Still no Ibis Still no autofocus (even though they said some lenses may work but I don’t buy that😂) Same fps Other than the box factor, which apparently is important for people. What other factors make you say “WOW, I’m switching” The only thing I saw that I really liked about the Pyxis is the battery life. Maybe there are other worth updates that I probably missed but overall is ok imo.

They need to put a 12k sensor in the pyxis body for a decent price otherwise they are missing a huge market. The current pyxis is ok body, but still an recycled technology with a 5 year old sensor that its is not suitable for most serious cinematographers.The new ursa 12k is a overkill for solo operators in terms of AC monitoring, connectivity, B mount battery and m2 memory. So my point the ursa 12k is in the rental area, the pyxis is in the entry mid-level level area. We miss something in between

Sh!t, the PYXIS 6K still only seems to have a 5 Gbit/s USB-C port (“USB-C 3.1 Gen 1”), choking the quality and reliability when recording to external media :( It’s just sad in 2024. Doesn’t have to be 40 or 20 Gbit/s, even just 10 Gbit/s USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 would have helped so much.

Have a vanilla Pocket 6k with the very same USB-C 5 Gbit/s. I switched to SSDs from the Enterprise market that have built-in powerloss protection (PLP). Combined with an external case with a modern USB-to-SATA or USB-to-NVMe bridge chipset the only issue ever is when you have constant-quality codec settings selected that might exceed 450 MB/s in certain conditions. The very same SATA SSD connected with a CFast adapter for example and which can reliably do 530 MB/s writes can solve the issue here in an A-B test. I’d probably go to enterprise U.2 SSDs via adapters, I don’t mind the larger sizes compared to card media but I do find the latter’s price-to-performance ratios disgusting.

As a URSA G2 user, I really hoped to see something in the middle. Like a 6K Full Frame, with decent framerates, internal NDs, XLR inputs, etc. I feel like there is now an even bigger gap between the 12K and the PYXIS. I do hope they make a PYXIS+ with the G2 framerates, NDs and XLR inputs.

The URSA Cine is an odd choice given the price point. I remember when they dropped the URSA 12k for $10k & virtually nobody bought it until they dropped the price to $6000. I suspect this will be a similar situation. Especially since they aren't changing body types. There are very few people asking for more resolution right now. There are so many other things they could have focused on. The market for 12k+ footage is beyond niche. I expect that this camera will barely sell anything and we'll see another precipitous price drop in the first year it is out. At those price points most people are gonna just pony up for a RED camera or an Arri. At under $10k that would be a different story.

"you don't need to shoot 12k, you can shoot 8k and 4k, without any crop and with super high frame rates, which is what people will use most of the times. Also, you can crop to 35mm 4 perf, 3 perf and 2 perf with plenty resolution so it's super versatile in this regard." (@bbrunorocha)

The frame rates will be a big selling point not to mention the flexibility of the camera as a whole. The 17k will be in a league by itself. There is no proper Medium format cinema camera available to purchase. The Alexa 65 is a rental only.

With 16 stops of DR, I expect to see these things absolutely everywhere in the film industry. Combine that with various resolution options without having a crop, this will absolutely cut into Arri’s and Red’s market. Need higher res for VFX shots without changing your field of view? Check. Need to shoot the rest of the movie at lower resolution because you don’t need more that 4-6K? Check.

Actuellement sur Bmpcc 6k , je trouvais que les constructeurs faisaient de moins en moins d’objectif EF et je voyais logique le choix de la monture L avec adaptateur histoire d’avoir du choix qui n’existe pas en EF . Pour le coup j’aurai aimé que la BMCC FF ait aussi cette monture , vu que je préfère ce forme factor Merci à toi 😉✌️

Yeah I think that screen is meant to use as the small screen on top of say a Komodo for menus and such and I guess if you use it in a crew with someone pulling your focus he can use that side screen maybe

I just wonder. Does Ursa Cine 12k just killed Burano? 1000$ DJI Focus Pro and you got better AF then Sony :D. Sure lack of IBIS, and mechanical ND. But the workflow with media cards seems insanely good. And they are not that expensive and one is included in price of the camera. Insane. I wonder how fast the readout is. Burano is terrible in that regard.

1. Adding a monitor but conveniently forget the hinge to be able to flip out and twist the screen. 2. Gently asking $500 more for the same sensor with all the glory, warts and all. 3. Nicely rub salt on the wounds and nudging us to buy actual usable monitor. In my humble opinion, if they wont discontinue the OG BMCC FF 6K for couple of years into the future, I have no issues or qualms.

I hear hinges are crazy expensive in Australia, huh🤦🏻‍♂️ The fact that PYXIS doesn’t have a rotating screen is almost a spit in the face, really. Especially bc of the market niche that camera suppose to occupy in BMD’s lineup, being more for entry level, probably solo operators, many even content creators who need to see and film themselves too occasionally. @@OfTwoLands I think it’s a spit in the face precisely because it’s not as if they designed a boxy camera with no monitor, or one with rudimentary controls, like Z-cam, or even Red Komodo. No, they’ve put a large 4” 1500nits HDR screen, so really I wouldn’t need any extra monitors. But then they decided “screw you ppl” and made it fixed on the side of all places, not even top. Like, ppl had certain expectations, right? A lot of us like what BMD is doing, I like their raw codec, it’s really nice to work with even on older machines. But then they had to do this stupidity. So yeah, I see they still don’t want to make a camera for content creators who want to have access to higher quality video and raw, and who do film themselves occasionally, so it’s not for me and I won’t buy it, but it doesn’t mean I can’t share my opinion.

VFX/SFX designers will take as many pixels as you can give them. It’s about post production work not final delivery.

you don't need to shoot 12k, you can shoot 8k and 4k, without any crop and with super high frame rates, which is what people will use most of the times. Also, you can crop to 35mm 4 perf, 3 perf and 2 perf with plenty resolution so it's super versatile in this regard.

Cette écran sur le côté est incompréhensible. Il enlève tout le côté robuste d’une box caméra. Il va se casser en 2-3 shoot vu son placement et ne sert absolument à rien.

😅 c’est déjà bien d’en avoir un! L’écran à l’arrière des bmpcc est similaire et je ne l’ai jamais cassé! Le but des box caméra c’est de mettre ses propres moniteurs.. Peut importe ce qu’ils font il y a toujours des complaintes 😅 Pour $3000 avoir cette forme avec ces options et specs est hallucinant!

Mais tu ne l’as jamais cassé justement car il est à l’arrière de la caméra et non pas au niveau du placement de ta main gauche. Il suffisait de copier red sur ce coup ci, un tout petit écran de réglage sur le dessus est bien plus pratique pour pouvoir faire ses réglages tout simplement. J’ai une bmpcc 6k et c’était hyper frustrant de passer aussi prêt d’un produit qu’on attendait depuis longtemps. L’argument du prix ne fonctionne plus pour moi. Je préfère mettre 6k et avoir une ergonomie cohérente.

Haha ok. AF can be done using a Lidar system as I just did with the Focus Pro and NDs are a very easy fix, espcially for a box camera intended to be rigged.

That has to be the worst designed box camera made so far lmao, clearly their designers haven’t ever shot with it, no functionality. Should have made the monitor separate or at the least flip out. It’s even less usable than the BMPCC cameras because there aren’t any buttons or controls you can see or hold while operating handheld.

@@OfTwoLands that’s true, I just think as a camera operator who has used dozens of cameras this has to be one of the worst ergonomically designed that I have seen. And I’ve owned a BMPCC 4K and 6K Pro cameras in the past, I love the image, and many other aspects of BM cams, but this design won’t function well for solo cam operators. And not very well in team environments either.

With so many great options for external monitors that have more and better features (waveform, vectorscopes, customizable peaking, etc) that you can move between other cameras, this move doesn’t bother me in the least.
