I came across one of your reviews earlier today, not being a photographer and only a hobby video fan I was much informed by it, I went to the next, and the one after .........well you can see where this is going I have now watched for almost 3 hours of stuff and even the stuff I didn't understand was so interesting! You are great at what you do, and in fact have made up my mind to buy a Blackmagic camera, if only the little cinema one great work

TimelineProvision TP Go Sony a7s! I had a Canon 7d and then I went for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Amazing image quality but a lot of features missing... The battery, audio recording, crop factor made me sell the BMCC and buy a Sony a7s. Couldnt be happier with that ! Amazing image quality, if you use Slog2 picture profile, you get very close in terms of dynamic range when you compare it to the Blackmagic cameras, and the detail is also very close. The major plus is the Full Frame sensor, which gives the best high-iso noise performance on the world. Before you buy one of these, try one out and see what you think, cheers from Brazil!

With the mini 4.6k and 4.6k Pro out, would you say that this camera is still worth looking at? The global shutter is an excellent feature that most cameras don't have and all the view screens are great. Weight is a bit much but to me its a shame this camera just got left behind by BMD. 1:28 / 1:29, slip up. you might want to make an annotation - you accidentally said that the Red was the clear out sharper, slightly better dynamic range, much easier to use and lighter and more practical in every way . Most of us know what you meant I'm sure, but of course some might get confused. Thanks! And keep up the great videos! I was already pretty sold on BM but these comparison vids pushed me firmly in that direction.

This review was very helpful to me as I just completed a music video on this camera. It was my first 4K experience. I watched your entire review before shooting the MV. It was great to know where all the features are on the camera. I did find out that you can turn off the peak metering / focus assist from the side buttons. ASA 800 was useless in low light but played fine with more light. We shot a couple green-screen shots and pulled a great key at ASA 400. Post was troublesome even on the latest greates Apple computer with a boatload of ram - In retrospect I would have shot in a lesser codec..... At the end of the month I am going to Japan to test and review the new Panasonic AG-DVX200 4k - Even though it is a very different animal from the URSA I am curious to experience a different 4k camera . But I did overall like shooting with the URSA and the weight help a lot with smooth shots on the tripod, Jib and Dolly.

I did lift the cam in a camera shop and it is freaking heavy! A mean, really , really heavy! Personally, I do not like the look of the sensor, it looks super crisp video instead of a film look contrary to the BMCC 2.5 that looks like film to me. I do not understand why they chose those cards to record in it. It should be SSD all the way.

Dude you give the best reviews.. HANDS DOWN. You keep me entertained throughout every camera review. I saw in the comments below that you shot this review on the BMPC. I have a question about the shot at 3:10. It appears that the car in the back left hand side has some "dead pixels" or what people are calling the "black whole". Blackmagic claimed to have fixed this problem with the new software update. I was curious if you are still having problem with the dead pixels as they are in the review. Thanks brother! Sensor DONT have much to do with sharpness lenses do and OLPF do...
@Faymusmedia
@Faymusmedia 10 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree a sensor plays the most important role. Low pass filters make them softer yes. Lenses that are of poor build quality can make the images soft yes. All these things do is downgrade the quality. Using good glass doesn't make the sensor better, it allows most of the resolution to be used and not wasted. The sensor IS what determines resolution, image quality and sharpness as well as many other things.
@Yyuiop
@Yyuiop 10 жыл бұрын
Faymusmedia no- lenses first then camera. Lens is much more important for rendering colour, resolution, sharpness and tonal clarity than a sensor. Glass over body always and any good DoP will tell you that.
@Rebassed
@Rebassed 10 жыл бұрын
Faymusmedia Let me tell you something, any modern sensor is no diffrent in terms of ''sharpness'' than lets a say the most expensive ones that you find in a arri alexa. the only thing that is directly affected from the sensor are the ISO settings.

Faymusmedia I actually have a follow up question. For someone who's building there own production company, would buying this compared to the C100 really be worth it? Or should I get the C100 for now, and wait a bit till I get the Blackmagic? Hoping it will later be fully fleshed out with cheaper cards. I am truly happy with 1080p footage, but with the larger accessibility to 4k, entering things the Sundance or releasing films in theaters, how would 1080p hold up against the many 4k users?
@Faymusmedia
@Faymusmedia 10 жыл бұрын
The c300 is a great run and gun camera one of the best cameras ever made. It depends if you need the resolution for black magic, or if you need raw. Does your budget allow for a c300 or 100? If so they are great.
@DavidLegel
@DavidLegel 10 жыл бұрын
Faymusmedia The budget is barley flexible, so I'd prefer the C100, plus I heard if you get the ninja blade, quality wise, you would be getting the same as the C300. However, just wanted to know if you thought resolution would matter when trying to enter things like sundance or show the film on the big screens.
@Faymusmedia
@Faymusmedia 10 жыл бұрын
The c100 and c300 have pretty the same quality and exact same res. ninja blade can be used with either. The film festivals not sure but 1080p was what they all are at least the 2012 and 2013 were.

Thank you very much for taking the time to go through the camera and its feature set. Currently I am just using the Panasonic GH3 for run and gun work but have aspirations for more film type of work. I have been watching Blackmagic grow as a company and I am planning to purchase this camera in the near future. BTW, are those the new Sony UWP-D series wireless mics? I am planning to pick up a set this week. How do you like them? On a side note, I believe some people are upset that their $20k investment in RED is getting trumped by $5k offering from Blackmagic. :) Cheers, Greg

Shogun would be a great way to get around the stupidly priced Cfast cards. One thing to note, 120fps has nothing to do with the sensor. That would be firmware.
@noahreynolds4716
@noahreynolds4716 10 жыл бұрын
It is hardware related though. Pumping that much data off of a sensor also creates a lot of heat, something that must be dissipated with the fan and heat sinks on the sensor mount.
@keneakins
@keneakins 10 жыл бұрын
The sensor still wouldn't fix that though.

Not the CFast cards, the fps.
@keneakins
@keneakins 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not talking about the CFAST cards. A sensor isn't the issue regarding fps. It's the processing power of the unit. A shogun actually might fix it if the the FPS is being processed in camera, and the actual capture is happening on a recorder. It's not a new concept.
@jakewhitehouse5204
@jakewhitehouse5204 10 жыл бұрын
Ken Eakins Actually the sensor is an issue regarding FPS. Some sensors will not be able to capture high framerates as they will overheat or become very noisy.

That camera is Way too heavy for run and gun stuff. That screen is way to big for me. Just looking at it tells me it will be awkward in some situations. No Canon primes are not the best stop it. The images are way sharp tho , WOW. looks like you will need a softFX filter. Shaving 10 lbs off will give you the Aja Cion, which seems superior to me on paper .... Some more footage from the camera, and less operation would be great. Otherwise, great review.

Does it crop more at 4k? Also, is the sensor a big difference from full-frame cameras

Hey, Thanks for your full review of URSA. If my budget only covers for two Canon EF lens, What do you suggest for better 4K Filmmaking?

One question...I was looking into the Production Cam but the low light quality is known as "not so good". I am suprised by your review and the quality of the Ursa. Is the low light quality because of the lens used? The sensor is the same as on the Prod. 4K right?

Do you suggest any other complete tripods with heads that would be a better fit with this "gigantor" camera? I noticed you mentioned your head was at max weight.(Tripods not monopod please)

I'm hoping the ATOMOS SHOGUN will work with the URSA in order to record of the SSD cards.

hi there, i see you're using swiftronix batteries on that beast. how long did one battery last? i have 3 for my black magic cinema and production cameras and they last about 2 hours and 45mins each non stop recording. I went to Adorama today and changed my mind because they didn't have any V mounts to mount any batteries to this thing, but i see in your video you rigged the swiftronix to the bottom of the rig. Can you also let us know what cable you used to plug the battery into the camera?

This thing still rocks hard, still my favorite blackmagic probably, it's a portable production studio.

I'd like to see this compared to the Sony FS7. The weight on this beast would be a big issue for me. I'm trying to get better stuff out of lighter gear, this seems to be going in the wrong direction.

I READ ASA 400 is the sweet spot, and that 200 and 800 are problematic. Shane Hurlibut My concern is how do you keep the asa at 400 for everything. NDs? crate in lights!? I really loved the HOOK download video. I actually like the weight, at least in theory, as I am a big guy and I like the inertia of a weighty camera hand held or shoulder mounted. I HATE that jittery HDSLR hand held look. Very close to getting a C100 Mark II with a Ninja. How close do you think a raw Ninja and C100 would be. Doing event work to make money is becoming more and more available to me.
