The resolution was the issue because you changed the camera from 12k to 2k so once you clean the number 1, footage would be fixed. I've seen that before.

In Resolve you probably have the clips decode quality set to "use project setting", which if you are working on a 4k timeline will treat the 12k footage as 4k, so zooming in will look not as expected. This camera is anything but soft. The footage I'm getting from mine is incredibly detailed.

@@EpicLightMedia Your lens is not at it's sweetest spot at F8, it's F4~5.6. You've hit diffraction limit at 12K by the time you're at F8. And shooting at 18:1 for 12K and expecting to punch in that far is... interesting...

The "noise" issue or the surprising lack of fidelity in a 12k image is probably due to the high compression ratio of 18:1 and perhaps the resolution of the glass in front of the sensor didn't quite resolve as well as you thought it might. The resolution of the sensor exceeds what the glass can resolve? Idk, just a thought.

I also think it is due to the sensor size. It’s basically the same size sensor as the URSA 4.6K, so probably around the same number and size of photosites as the 4.6K. The 12K would need a larger sensor to actually look good cropped in. So I’m not really sure what the point of 12K in this camera is besides making footage look better when you down res to 6K or 4K.

Have worked with a handful or professional DP's who'd been sent this camera prior to it's release. Both of them thought the noise was so bad, they were convinced they'd had a defunct version. They sent it back to Blackmagic, with that note. Very concerning. Sounds as if the issue was never resolved internally.

@@Datboyvideo shot 12k 8:1 and 8K Q5 and when downscaling to 4K there is limited noise (better than native 4K capture on other cameras). Additionally denoise (most raw workflows require this) eliminates all noise. Never the less, this camera NEEDs light.

It's not meant to be a 12K camera. Or for cropping in. It's meant to be the perfect 4K camera by giving you an imaging that is down sampled in a very clever way to give you an image that has no interpolation for the pixels. It can also do best 8K in sensor(or post) that any other camera by reducing the interpolation by a factor of 1.33

As a mostly untalented guy that last year started taking photos with a 61MP camera, I'll tell you one of the limiters of cropping in on images that high: motion blur. It might look crisp in 4K, but any motion is going to take away from that crispness as you punch in. I'm finding I have to shoot with shutter speed in excess of ~200 to enable effective cropping. Shooting 1/50-1/60, even the blood pumping through my hand will shake the camera enough to blur the small details. Minute rumbles in the ground will do it. Wind. Spectres. Anything. You really have to freeze each frame... of course, then everything will have that 'Private Ryan' look, which is OK because Edward Burns doesn't get on screen much these days.

Chromatic Aberration seen in 10:40 of this video is not the fault of the camera. It happens when you use cheap lens. Use the Zeiss Supreme series cinema lenses, they are very expensive but they also give expensive results. [You can rent them, it would be cheaper.]

FYI: Since firmware 7.7 the issues have all been fixed. And firmware 8.1 as of this writing is even better. 18:1 is super clean, no artefacting whatsoever in all resolutions and frame rates.

I have been playing with every bit of sample footage from this camera I can get my hands on and I am seeing the same issue that you are seeing. I was never particularly sold on its resolution, but rather the full RGB colour sensor. In my testing I came to the conclusion that this is probably best used as a 6K cinema camera as the oversampling resolves the noise issues at that resolution. I wonder if future firmware updates will improve the noise and softness issues? Regardless, it's an incredible camera with an incredible breakthrough in color science. But it's new technology and as such we should expect improvement in future firmware and updates to it's architecture. Looking forward to seeing your further tests. Cheers!

Wait you expected there to be a lens with the resolving power to be tack sharp when you punch in 400%? hahahahahahaha that lens doesn't exist that is why everyone was saying this camera is a whiff and a waste of money. The glass doesn't exist to resolve that much detail. 99% of the lenses that are out there in the world today can barely resolve 4k-6k and you thought you could just slap em on a 12k camera and you'd be good to go?

If you want to check the potential of 12K camera - Use this Combo - Angenieux Optimo Ultra 12X MK2 version 24-290 available since last year ( only lens in world that can resolve 12K on 32mm image circle) & Use Lesser Compression Ratio on Camera ! to Check Potential of 8K use Tokina Vista Primes, SIGMA Cine High Speed Primes, Xeen CF will Resolve 8K on 46/44 image Circle !

Have you considered getting the SSD recorder? I know it can go direct to USB-C, but I will say that I absolutely LOVE being able to pick up Samsung EVO 860's. So simple to swap them out and I don't need to worry about knocking a USB-C cable.
