Also-if you heat up small sections of the EVA with a heat gun and then immediately use the texture tool, it takes texture just fine. You just can’t heat gun it a second time.
@willdunn8846 Жыл бұрын
Amazing idea! More sci fi stuff please.
@NeilIvory Жыл бұрын
Agreed! I've used the heatgun+texture method with EVA sheets myself, and it works most of the time, though some EVA gets a bad consistency after heating and might fall apart

^ Came here to say this. Its how a lot of Cosplayers build their armor - heat it, shape it, mod podge, and paint. If you mess up, heat it again and the shape comes out.
@silverthorngoodtree5533 Жыл бұрын
If you have a second pair of hands, that would be best. you have to work FAST with the heat method.

Will it still be flexible along the fold?? Curious if it will affect how it bends, I know sometimes heating can make things brittle? 🤔🤷♂️😊

I'm all for these dollar store videos! I've started to feel like too many of the bigger warhammer/DnD/miniature games youtubers have moved a bit too much away from beginner friendly tutorials and projects. Keep up the good work my man! EDIT: I love the glowing lines, they give me a warm and fuzzy old european scifi comics feel, something I feel Moebius could've dreamed up.

Two minutes in and I'm already "ok, scrap the other plans I had for for tiles" and switching to this (mainly because already have the craft foam from making sci-fi tiles on dollarama mdf squares). That line painting had a bit of a lava vibe at one point - so clearly lava board is on the the work plan

"spike tape" is similar to your automotive tape in sizes but is designed for the theatre and film industry so has a much less tacky adhesive and might be less inclined to pull up paint beneath it. Roscoe is the biggest manufacturer but there are others.

Looks great - another smart need-meeting un-difficult use of cheap stuff. Ding! Yellow-line grid isn't worse than the orange one - just good in a different way. Am sure that a pile-on of buildings and scatter chases off any lino-look when you're using your grimdark yoga mat. Yoda mat, even. Must get on a plane to check out your endlessly bountiful nearest dollar store. Regards from Over Here - and ne mangez pas la neige jaune.

Fantastic. Think I might try this out for my Grimdark Future: Firefight games. Adding to a comment from earlier: Once you make your small cuts (e.g. hexes) in EVA, you can hit them with a heat gun, and they will open up and become much more visible.

Love the build! A trick with working with textures on ev foam (from the cosplay world) is that it responds to heat. Crumple up a piece of tinfoil and heat it from behind with an iron, pressing it into the ev foam. You'll get a rough, almost leathery texture that gives you some depth and character. Cheers!

Could be your best project video. Superb crafting sir! So many possibilities, you had a zen experience painting the lines and stopped thinking which is sublime. 3 tones and the cracks would have looked like you wanted; basic orange, brown-orange edges and a yellowish to whitish center with varying opacity. Mb a highlight drybrush of the tile edges for the finishing touch. Great stuff dude, you just made a classic.

I love seeing different materials and approaches to gaming mats. I think this one is tied for the best option I've seen with the equestrian rubber mat Geek Gaming Scenics tested. I have also seen these tiles as interlocking floor mats at big home stores which might be an interesting way to 'tile' a mat. If you were going to forego the folding and just have them as tiles, would you still have picked latex paint as a base coat, or would you have have stuck with Mod Podge and why?

Very cool idea man, i love it. If you add texture to the EVA foam and then hit it with a heat gun the textures shines through very clear as it shrinks the EVA. Every detail will be enhanced and you can see it as clear an running a knife and pen through foamboard ;-). Thanks for the video.

Haven't been this early for a while. Great build, sometimes simplicity is best, and using 2 readily available and relatively cheap materials for the build is proof of that. I imagine you could build all kinds of gaming mats with this technique; from dystopian city streets like you created, to idyllic farmland and pastures, to forest clearings with a brook running through it, all readily foldable and easy to store. I'll have to see if I can find similar materials and make one (or a few different ones) suitable for fantasy gaming.
@Earendilgrey Жыл бұрын
Along with using a heat gun to get the texture like others have said, you can also use it to heat seal and prime the foam so you don't have to use as many layers of paint and speed up your production time. You can also use Mod Podge or Flexi dip to seal it.

I really like your version of cheap durable battle map mat. This technique work well for futuristic theme, but how would you approach a more open field ? I can imagine zones for rocks or forests, but having too many of them in the middle might be weird? Maybe? On the other hand, having only a few might make the fold hinges too weak? Anyway, your tutorials are amazing.

You can carve textures with an xacto blade and use a heat gun to open the lines up to be deeper. That is how cosplayers use foam. Also with those deeper textures you can use flex seal on the mat which is rubbery and even more durable.
