Been painting minis for about 2 years and I still learned something. If I could go back, I definitely wish I bought more cheaper paints when I started out. I definitely grew to love Apple Barrel as I was running out of GW paints when I was dry brushing terrain and my jaw dropped when I saw how $3 gets me a huge bottle of paint vs the few ounces of Citadel paints...

A tip: Take a picture of the paints you have with your smart phone. That way you'll know what you have while shopping and not buy gun metal grey 3 times like I did. Also helps with shades when you have multiple brands to choose from. Cheers

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Hi there, i just discovered yiur channel and i'm sure i'll jump into a great journey of crafting. A question: this "foam", is it polysterene? Like, the white-pink-green soft balls found in packaging but its hard model? I have this at home and, before my parents throw that in the bin (they don't even know i play dnd online with my friends), i need to know if i can use it. I have like, two huge garbage bags full of it. Is it it?

@@weeklysanta5828 hey! Been crafting a while. I think the foam he's talking about is whats known as XPF Foam, its faily high density and can usually be found on amazon or at a local craft store. If it crumbles and kinda turns into beads you can still use it for some applications. Hope any of this helped 😁

Here’s my 2 cents on craft paint. I work at Michaels and Craftsmart is our brand. The acrylic is okay. Apple Barrel is really junk. If you have the extra money and you like a little nicer paint, buy Folk Art or Americana, you will notice a difference in quality compared to Craftsmart. However, it may not matter at all for your intents and purposes and if you are making washes and adding mediums, the additional quality(largely thickness) may be completely irrelevant. You can’t go wrong with the 24 variety pack.
@reltin9313 жыл бұрын
SO i build his brige didnt use craftsmart like in his vidio got americana out of hobby lobby Rain Grey i use it looked bad, then i trying black wash the color down, still didnt like it, then i got slate grey from deco art at miejer and silver lineing. still was too bright apply a wash to tone it down, went a a micheals and finally purshused my frist pack of craftsmart appled dark grey and wow the differents on the sides, left silver lining on the road part. this bridge was on my shelf for 7 months before i repainted and learned you can bs the bser. also its not one brand to rule them all but the darkness binds them.

For those who want a rainbow of colours for some reason, and are willing to learn about paint mixing to get every colour you want, you can get by on 5-6 colours. You need a white, a black, a magenta, a cyan, and a yellow. That's 5. But if you'd like you can get a brown to add more earthy tones. Browns can be hard to mix well if you're just starting out. I recommend checking out colour theory videos if you want more information on this kind of thing.

You have been a big help... I started out painting miniatures and now I am expanding to terrain... Two things I have learned from painting miniatures. First, distilled water is best for thinning down paint. Normal tap water has to many minerals in it. Second, just because it doesn't look good closeup(6 inches from your face), doesn't mean it wont at 3 feet away.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial7 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that a lot of the stuff you need to do for mini painting (expensive paint, distilled water, ect) is a waste of time and money on terrain. You definitely don't need to use distilled water for terrain, you can get a way with a lot crappier products.

there are options for whole pallette compositions. I ordered grey tones online . In small tubes 12 tones in total from off whites to dark grey. 10 Euros. Around 10 dollars. Black in a big bottle longside dark brown. But essentially you can apply a 3 color scheme every terrain so you just need to choose the 3 you want.

Possibly the most magical color I have in craft paint, is Apple Barrel's "Brown Oxide" it dries in this amazing matte rust color and if you mix with with a flow-aid or make it into a wash makes things really rusty and gross. Add some green for a dried sludge effect.

My quick tip, The paints you will need are always Yellow, Blue, Red, Black, White. Brown is optional but recomended! Black and white you will want to get a big bottle of. Walmart there are paints like 50 cents to like 75 cents for small bottles. You can also grab brushes and palletes and stuff nearby. You may want a Natural sponge or two, If you cant get it, just roll with Papertowels you also can never have enough Clearcoat. The spraycan will save you. But its optional. Just go with the stuff above

Great video - I've learned so much from this channel. One thing I noticed you use terms for color that aren't exactly the standard. Hue is the color, for example red, green, blue, orange etc are examples of hues. Hue represents where on the color wheel a color fits. Shade is used to talk about a hue that is made darker than the base hue in this case by adding black. Tint is used to refer to a hue that has been lightened from the base hue, in this case by adding white to the paint. Sorry for being so pedantic but as a BS in Art Education these things come to my mind.

If you have a 2DS or 3DS, I recommend investing in one of the Art Academy games, whether in cartridge form or download if you don't have a good paint program or have inexperience with them. Pros: It has a color wheel and a virtual palette to mix simulated acrylics with, and it simulates adding water to the paints. That's handy for experimenting with making color blends and tints and washes before painting, so you don't have to worry about wasting your paint trying to get the right shade. Also, just get colors in the same hues as in the virtual palette, write down the "formula" for your favorite shades as you make them, and you can mix your favorite colors over and over again without error. It's also good for testing new tints and washes over colors you've previously made. Cons: It doesn't save you money if you don't already own and have to invest in a 2DS or 3DS, or in buying the cartridge unless you're buying it secondhand at a good discount, like from a place like Half-price Books or estarland.com. or a local shop. Also, keep in mind that you have to factor in the lightening acrylic paint does when it dries, and that unlike real acrylic paint, the game doesn't simulate paint drying. It also doesn't simulate UV, neon, opalescent or metallic paints, or glosses or matte additives, so keep that in mind as well when you're painting special effects into your figures.

Hi. I am an artist and I have acrylic paints already. But what I have are expensive because they are archival. Should I buy cheap paint for this new hobby, or use what I have? If this hobby doesn't use a lot of paint then it won't matter, but if it does then it might. I guess I'm asking if a project takes up a lot of paint or not? What would you do? I haven't ever made 3d art before. Also, you should definitely try out Black 3.0 from Culture Hustle if you haven't heard of it, I think it would make a really cool 3d DnD scene. It's not cheap, but it's REALLY awesome! I think I'm going to use it for a project with a black pit or hole or something, not sure yet. Anyways, Thanks for doing the basics videos! I've been lost on KZbin for days and just found your channel and its just what I needed to get started with minis. (I am in no way affiliated with CH).

honestly, the only colours you truly need will be black, white and the three primary colours, blue.red & yellow..from ALL these colours you can make any shade of what ever colour you need by mixing..thus, buy the largest bottles of each of these you can find and then invest in small containers and bulk mix up your colours ready to have on hand..from the supermarket you can buy from the container isle small round plastic containers that are normally used for holding sauces/salad dressing for your lunch-box that can cost a couple of bucks for 6 -8 tubs..and then you can go wild..maybe your other investment would be metallic paints, and maybe only gold..you can then add shades of brown or orange to make bronze and copper and so forth..

Are the crafter's acrylic paints the same as the kids school acrylic paints? They come in big big bottles and cheap?!
